Did Justice Roberts just HAND the ELECTION to OBAMA??!!

I was as shocked as anyone else when conservative Constitutionalist Supreme Court Justice Roberts declared the Fed. Govt mandate portion of Obamacare Constitutional. His vote actually decided the outcome of the case and swinged the support from right to left.

Today, Democrats are celebrating a milestone victory in the fight to get Americans access to healthcare. The GOP is fired up at the possibility of repealing said mandate and have already scheduled a vote in the house.

Some strategists are saying that Justice Roberts has actually played the decision of Obamacare as a tax on the people in order to have it more easily repealed by his fellow Party members later on.

How will this affect Romney's chances in the General Election? Why didn't Justice Roberts take a stand on the issue now instead of kicking it down the road for the hous later? Can the Supreme Court sometimes make mistakes in ruling? Are they really above the politics of the day?

You know what to do America!!! Vote right now, leave a comment, share with everyone who loves this country, and don't forget to RAVE!!!!

His interpretation of ovomitcare as being a tax,.. which in turn exposed more deception by the left,....should have been adequate grounds for Roberts to vote it down now.

Obama blew it three years ago when he didn't educate the public regarding the particulars of the bill.
He blew it again [ok, I know it was necessary, but still - ] when he agreed to wait till 2014 for the biggest benefits to kick in. So most folks won't be getting those benefits by the time the election rolls around.

The people who hate the bill either because they hate the bill or because they hate Obama were going to vote against him regardless. If the SCOTUS had struck it down, they'd call him a loser and vote against him. Since they declared it Constitutional, they'll resent it and him and vote against him. He never had their votes to begin with.

That said, Romney seems to be working hammer and tongs to be sure he loses the election so, at this point, it's still anybody's game.

While it may fire up the base of both the GOP and the Democrats it probably won't help either candidate that much come November. Yes its a victory and a major accomplishment for the president but in now way does it hand the election to him. Some will argue that it helped Romney more considering the fundraising boost going on now but their attempt to repeal it may well backfire on them with the Independent/moderate voters needed to win yet another close election.

Only time will tell and an awful lot can happen in next four months that may have a larger impact on the election than this issue, at least in my opinion.

Justice Roberts just did the Republicans a huge favor. He insured a win in November. Now we will have the POTUS, House and Senate.

You see, the TAX mandate is not collectable or enforceable and the single biggest, least wanted tax to ever be created. 70% of Americans DON'T want the mandate and as a tax they will HATE IT.

The States don't have to comply with expansion. SO they will get their funding even when they refuse to expand medicare and medicade. There goes the ability to make States comply and kills the funding issue.

Thanks Justice Roberts, you just became my new hero.

This makes Romney a shoe in for POTUS.

This is the democrats Pearl Harbor. Now just wait till Nov when them bomb drops on them.

He didn't say the mandate was legal! He said the mandate was a tax! I thought Barrack Obama said that if you didn't make more than $250K, you had nothing to fear because he wasn't going to raise your taxes. Apparently, he lied because he just got exposed for having pushed the biggest tax increase on the middle class in history!
  • sealpoint Andrew 2012/06/30 18:13:58

President Obama has cut taxes by $3,600 for the average middle-class family over the last three and a half years, and the Republicans fought him nearly every step of the way. From cutting taxes for every working American through the Making Work Pay and payroll tax cuts, to the American Opportunity Tax Credit which gives up to a $10,000 tax credit to help families pay for four years of college, the President has put more money in the pockets of middle-class Americans.

Here's another fact: Obamacare includes the largest middle-class tax cut for health care in history. According to the independent Congressional Budget Office, 19 million people will receive tax credits -- worth an average of about $4,800 each -- to help afford health care. These tax credits will finally put health insurance within reach for millions of American families. In short, Obamacare cuts taxes for middle-class families. Period.

I don't think the decision will have much of an effect at all. RWNJs will continue to rage and malign the health care bill regardless of the realities, so what's new about that? Those
who must look forward to paying something toward their medical care at the ER or share the costs of not being insured will complain and may elect to vote for Romney who has promised to restore the freeloaders' "rights" to free care at expense of taxpayers and those who have insurance. There may be quite a number of those, but they were destined to vote for a Republican candidate anyway, with or without the SCOTUS decision, their free care was guaranteed by Republican policies. So, little has changed, except those who
see how this new legislation will change the free stuff at the ER and lower the costs by forcing millions to pay for their care or share, they will likely vote for the one who brought this needed change to our attention. Game score... probably NET ZERO or a slight gain for Obama.

What is more important in the big picture, and surely to not be overlooked by millions who will vote, is that even a wholly "conservative" Chief Justice has made it clear twice in the month of June that he will not remain party to the destructive "issues" and deceptions created by the Party of No and...

Roberts knows that the decisions from the Court while he is Chief will forever bear his name . The "Citizens United" absurdity is already like an albatross around his reputation, and he must have some concern for how history will define his tenure. Don't count on him to always be there for the Farside.

Because, . . . it makes the public MAD, ANGRY, SICK of GOV'T, tired of the constant stream of BS coming from this administration. Very possibly, Roberts did make things easier for Romney, because like so many have stated here, ABO, anybody but Obama.

What's hard for me to grip is the trust that his supporters STILL have for him, even after ALL the LIES he's told! All the scenarios that are NOT on the up and up. The dead bodies that are piling up.

The questions of eligibility, former attendance and support for the flag burning ceremonies he and Michelle went to. The fact their law licenses were lost due to criminal activities. How could any God-fearing citizen reconcile voting for this LIAR AGAIN???

More exactly, Mr. Chief Justice Roberts refused to hand the election to Republican Party Presidential candidate Mitt Romney. If President Obama's biggest legislative achievement were blocked, he would have a much harder time getting reelected. Those who wanted national health care would blame Obama for the failure. Those who want some other issue which was put on the back burner to give national health care highest priority, would be especially angry with Obama.

LOL! Sure sounds like people are going to have to pay a TAX for this. Are you sure these are not TAXES?

The first, and best known, of these seven taxes that will hit all Americans as a result of Obamacare is the Individual Mandate Tax (no longer concealed as a penalty). This provision will require a couple to pay the higher of a base tax of $1,360 per year, or 2.5% of adjusted growth income starting with lower base tax and rising to this level by 2016. Individuals will see a base tax of $695 and families a base tax of $2,085 per year by 2016.

Next up is the Medicine Cabinet Tax that took effect in 2011. This tax prohibits reimbursement of expenses for over-the-counter medicine, with the lone exception of insulin, from an employee’s pre-tax dollar funded Health Saving Account (HSA), Flexible Spending Account (FSA) or Health Reimbursement Account (HRA). This provision hurts middle class earners particularly hard since they earn enough to actually pay federal taxes, but not enough to make this restriction negligible.

The Flexible Spending Account (FSA) Cap, which will begin in 2013, is perhaps the most hurtful provision to the middle class. This part of the law imposes a cap of $2,500 per year (which is now unlimited) on the amount of pre-tax dollars that could be deposited in...

This part of the law imposes a cap of $2,500 per year (which is now unlimited) on the amount of pre-tax dollars that could be deposited into these accounts. Why is this particularly hurtful to the middle class? It is because funds in these accounts may be used to pay for special needs education for special needs children in the United States. Tuition rates for this type of special education can easily exceed $14,000 per year and the use of pre-tax dollars has helped many middle income families.

Another direct hit to the middle class is the Medical Itemized Deduction Hurdle which is currently 7.5% of adjusted gross income. This is the hurdle that must be met before medical expenses over that hurdle can be taken as a deduction on federal income taxes. Obamacare raises this hurdle to 10% of adjusted gross income beginning in 2013. Consider the middle class family with $80,000 of adjusted gross income and $8,000 of medical expenses. Currently, that family can get some relief from being able to take a $2,000 deduction (7.5% X $80,000 = $6,000; $8,000 –$6,000 = $2,000). An increase to 10% would eliminate the deduction in this example and if that family was paying a 25% federal tax rate, the real cost of that lost deduction would be $500.

The fifth new tax on the middle class, and all Americans, is the Health Savings Account (HSA) Withdrawal Tax Hike. This provision increases the additional tax on non-medical early withdrawals from an HSA from 10% currently to 20% beginning in 2013. This provision actually sets these accounts apart from Investment Retirement Accounts (IRAs) and other tax advantaged accounts, all of which remain with a 10% early withdrawal tax.

    THE RACIST TAX,
Another regressive tax that is part of this law began in 2010 and that is the Indoor Tanning Services Tax, which places a 10% excise tax on people using tanning salons. While some may regard this as insignificant, the broader implication is that this act of taxation is a blatant move by the federal government to control the behavior of citizens. This provision, as does the Individual Mandate and as Justice Kennedy said during the oral arguments on the constitutionality of the law said, “….fundamentally changes the relationship between the federal government and the citizen.”

The seventh new tax that directly impacts the middle class, along with all citizens, is the Excise Tax on Comprehensive Health Insurance Plans or the “Cadillac” Health Insurance Plan Tax. These are plans that provide extensive coverage and that are generally fully paid for, or largely paid for, by employers. This provision imposes a 40% excise tax on the employer-paid premium on taxpayers who are covered by such plans, beginning in 2018. The reason it begins in 2018 is because most unionized workers are covered by plans that fall under this definition and a deferral was made to spare union members from this tax for at least a period of time.
