Dick Morris: Combative GOP Primary Good for the Republicans?

Dick Morris, no stranger to politics, says the combative Republican primaries has helped the Republicans vet the best candidate. The personal attacks, jabs and scrutiny has helped the Republicans inoculate all the candidates for the general election more than the policy debates.

As the debates accumulate, it becomes more and more evident that Newt Gingrich’s intellect, experience, articulateness and depth of knowledge elevate him to the top of the GOP field. Anyone should be happy to pay admission to watch him duel with President Obama in debate! He’s not as charismatic as Herman Cain or as smooth as Mitt Romney, but boy, does he have a brain!

The nominating process has been so combative and the media scrutiny so searing that the candidates have been pre-screened. The FBI screening process is nowhere near as intense as the negative-research capacities of the media and political opponents.

Dick Morris says that Obama will lose because of his high unapproval ratings, horrible economy, and other negatives. The Republicans need to present a reliable candidate that has no surprises -- no skeletons in his closet we haven't already discussed on a national level.

Enter (or re-enter) Newt Gingrich. Newton Leroy McPherson, age 68, got elected to Congress in 1978 and served as a close Conservative ally of President Ronald Reagan. Newt served as Speaker of the House during the Republican landslide victory during President Bill Clinton.

Newt has gone around the block a few times, and I think America wants someone with experience, intelligence and who can deliver real HOPE and CHANGE.

Watch this Dick Morris video to see his thoughts on how modern media reshaped the primaries:

Dick Morris served as an adviser to President Bill Clinton, and authored many books on American politics including “Outrage,” “Fleeced,” “Catastrophe” and “2010: Take Back America — A Battle Plan.”

Really--- that's why John McCain was the best conservative choice last election, and why Dubya prevailed in 2000.

There is no need to be combative. That is all for show. What people need to know is how they will address the issues of the day or even if they KNOW the real issues of the day. Right now these "debates" are more like the GOP Comedy Hour. Obama will wipe the floor with any of them when the real debates happen.

Mixed bag for me.... clearly Newt is a good candidate but will his past foolishness allow him to win? Mitt seems to be the most solid candidate.... after 08 when the republicans put up big mac.... it seems to make they will go for safe winning candidate...that works against Newt regardless of his ability.... bark p.s. True I would enjoy seeing Newt and Barack debate...but will it happen?

Now an economic genius has come to the front. We may get another "Contract with America." Gingrich has the economic insight to turn it around and has actually done it before.

What a joke. "Vet" the best candidate. All anyone has to do is go to Opensecret.org and find the two candidates(on both sides) with the most contributions from the banksters and the issue du jour, most likely the corporations profiting the most from the wars, and you have your puppets to choose from. Your illusion of choice. Dick Morris is at least irresponsible and at worst, treasonous, for neglecting to tell the public the truth about the facade that is our election process.

By the way, is anyone who has actually watched the debates going to say they are anything but a joke? They are fair?????

I certainly hope everyone gets exactly what they deserve this election. They most certainly did last election and will the next and the next and the next. Until this public has the balls to step off the partisan crazy train of doing the same thing over and over again, expecting different results, everything else is just spinning wheels until there is nothing left of this country to save.

I would think most know we do not want these personal type attacks aired in public ..I would much rather see a combative GOP when dealing with the issues of how to enact policy that will aid the free market to grow as well as how best to stop the overspending in congress so down the road the nation's national debt can be lowered.

The only thing more fun than watchng the Republican candidates gore each other is watching Huntsman trying so hard not to burst out laughing when Perry and Bachmann open their mouths.

Great stuff for SNL and the late night comics. Keep those debates coming!

Well, I happen to like Dick Morris and do like his point of view most of the time. I think we need to see all the candidates true colors and find out just what they REALLY stand for NOW....and hope that their true colors are absolutely true and not LIES like of all Obama's promises. This will indeed be a very interesting election. We need a President that truly cares about the American people and has their best interest at heart this time around. It is critical for this country. I think GOP primary was good for the Republicans. Very good.

I think they hurt SOME, but not much. Those who hate Obama will vote for the Easter Bunny if Mr. Bunny is on the ballot. But I think some centrist/indy type voters have seen just enough GOP silliness to just tune out GOP for now and will just vote to stay with Obama. Not many, mind you, but some.

If enough Conservatives get it through their heads that Romney is a RINO, it can be a good thing. Everybody else running for the Republican nomination can beat Obama. Romney could lose, but even if he did beat Obama, it would not be good for America.

Do you honestly think that a lot of that sentiment (Tea Party domination) remains after some of the recent political polling? Seems to me like the TP candidates and incumbents might be in for a comeuppance.

    1. It has somewhat helped the Republicans vet their candidates.
    2. It has helped those apposed to the new Reich-Wing Republican Party realize what a bunch of maroons, liars, charlatans, hypocrites and corporate lackeys the new Reich-Wing sheep willingly flock to.
    3. It has helped the sane citizen realize that President Obama ain't as bad as the alternatives.

Truth never damages a cause that is just.
