Desperate Measures for Desperate Times

Tasine 2012/08/05 11:46:39

FOR the dwindling few out there who still believe that big accusations require a little foundation and that truth — as opposed to conjecture — matters, here’s an update:

As last week drew to a close, Harry Reid, the Senate’s Democratic majority leader, had backed up his claim that Mitt Romney didn’t pay taxes for a 10-year period with absolutely nothing more than some vague reference to some unnamed guy who said something of the sort to Reid during some phone conversation some time ago.

That’s it. That’s all. But for Reid, it was enough not only to level his charge but also, as the days pressed on, to double and triple down on it, his language and manner growing more righteous even as his evidence grew no more detailed or persuasive.

After the Senate leader made his accusation, the Salon.com writer Alex Seitz-Wald consulted several tax attorneys about its theoretical plausibility and determined that it was “nothing short of ludicrous.” Meanwhile, the Romney campaign — and, later, Romney himself — denied the charge.

Reid was unbowed. Inconsistent, too. At one point he told reporters from his home state of Nevada that “a number of people” had whispered to him of Romney’s alleged tax evasion, while at a subsequent point he issued a statement citing only “an extremely credible source,” singular. In neither instance did he hang any flesh on these bones.

“I don’t think the burden should be on me,” said Reid, whose history of intemperate, borderline adolescent remarks was detailed in The Times by Michael D. Shear and Richard A. Oppel Jr. “The burden should be on him. He’s the one I’ve alleged has not paid any taxes.”
(Whatever happened to "innocent until proven guilty"? Maybe Reid doesn't understand that part of the law.)

The Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee was forced last week to issue a public apology to the international casino magnate Sheldon Adelson, who is giving tens of millions to Republicans this year, for having asserted on its Web site that he was knowingly profiting from “a Chinese prostitution strategy” at his casino in Macau. It has no proof of that.

Its defenders will say that Adelson is so brazenly exploiting lax campaign-finance regulations to hijack the political process that he must be discredited and neutralized by whatever means necessary. Details, schmetails.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The Democrat Party has been sleazy for years and it's probably at its worst right now. I read total desperation - from little mean-spirited lies like Reid engages in too often, to Obama's inability to raise as much money as expected, to Obama's mad campaign spending spree.
I'm not sure what these jokers are up to, but I can assure you, it's no good.
(I cannot believe the NYTimes printed this story - very much out of character).
    Just more of the Obama Camps and the Democrats lies to mislead the voters about Romney. They have no good reasons for us not to vote for Romney so they make stuff up. All of the following are still being spouted to the electorate even though they have been shown to be all out lies or deceptive.
    Mitt Romney “did not leave [Bain Capital] when he says he did,” and that he’s responsible for “American jobs that were outsourced” by Bain-controlled companies after February 1999.
    FactCheck.org - False – “We’ve seen no evidence so far to show that Romney was actually running Bain, even part-time and from a distance of nearly 2,100 miles, as the Obama campaign wishes voters to believe. Romney was working 12-hour days, six days a week, as president of the 2002 Winter Olympics committee and was not actively involved in Bain. (Yet Obama Champaign still repeats it and runs the ads)
    Romney personally “shipped jobs to China and Mexico” and that “Romney’s never stood up to China; all he’s ever done is send them our jobs.”
    FactCheck.org - False - “We disagreed in an article we posted on June 29, stating that “we found no evidence to support the claim that Romney — while he was still running Bain Capital — shipped American jobs overseas.” And we still see no such evidence.
    An Obama TV ad alleged Romney “backed a law that outlaws all abortions, even in cases of rape and incest.”
    FactCheck.org - False - “THERE IS NO SUCH LAW. The Obama campaign was referring to a question about a hypothetical “federal ban on all abortions” posed at a 2007 debate by an audience member. In his answer, Romney did not say what, if any, exceptions he supported — giving the Obama campaign the opening to answer for him. Romney has been specific, both before and after that debate, that he supports exceptions for rape, incest and to save the life of the mother.
    "[Mitt Romney is] asking you to pay more so that people like him can get a big tax cut."
    “If Mitt Romney is running for president to get a tax cut, he’s not the “sterling” businessman Bill Clinton said he was. Spending six years and a tidy slice of his own fortune just to grab a reduction in his tax rates would be a pretty lousy way to go about it.”
    -Chris Stirewalt Power Play blog
    The truth doesn’t matter, as long as he can destroy Romney”.
    Obama told a crowd in Ohio that an Independent group study says: “Romney wants to give the top 1/10th of the top one percent huge tax cuts that would raises taxes on everyone else by $2,000”.
    Politifacts - "We need to be clear from the start that the problem independent analysts have with digging into Romney's tax plan is that much of the "plan" isn't yet known. Any analysis is based only on what has been said by Romney in speeches and in press releases. It necessarily makes some assumptions, and therefore these conclusions are not definite as long as the details of the plan remain unknown".
    The fact that they don't even know what Romney's tax plan is in it's entirety does not matter. They take the bits and pieces and twist them how best suits them.
    Sleazy Reid just can't help himself. He and Obama are peas in a pod.
    btw, "innocent until proven guilty" is no longer a part of the law. Today, it's the "seriousness of the charge" and one is convicted unless one can prove themselves innocent. In civil law, anyone can make any sort of accusation, particularly to a government official or a large institution such as a bank, and it is up to you to prove a negative, that the accusation is false. Never mind that, to do so, you will risk everything you own, everything your family owns, footing the bill for your defense and whatever attorneys you can afford. Even if you win and do prove your innocence (as a 30 year old business in my state did), you are financially ruined, and your reputation is ruined by the false allegations.
    Dirty Harry Reid, he has so overstepped his authority, he needs to be gone yesterday. Where is the proof Harry? It is not up to Romeny to disprove, it is up to you to Prove your accusations. The reason you did this on the floor of the senate is because by doing it there you are protected from a slander lawsuit. My, My - Harry - where are the taxes you have refused to show? This move is nothing more than a major distraction from the issues the voters are concerned about and this is exactly the way Obama and his Chicago thugs have acted since Obama first ran for the Senate in Chicago.
    Reid/Dems accusing the investigation of the Fast and Furious failed gun running operation that killed Brain Terry as a "witch hunt", what should Reid's action in the People's Congress be depicted?
    People of NV should be ashamed for electing Reid, because he just set a new low in decency for Senate floor decorum. Our family have a planed trip to go see Celine Dion in Vegas but decided to cancel our trips. I personally will use my spending power to "change" the damages done by Dem in any way that I can and how ever small it may be.
    No:( In the Article one, section 6(I believed) stated that any thing said /recorded in the Hall of Congress is immune to any prosecution.
    The Senate has its own ethic committee for any rules and decorum violations, the "majority leader " is the one brings up any charges against its members.
    We'll never see justice from this adm, the worse presidency in history!
    Since this was stated on the floor of the Senate, he cannot be sued for libel. It is the one place what he says is protected, which is exactly why he made the statement there.
    Reid is a hypocrit. He doesn't disclose his tax returns. Same for Pelosi and most of the idiots demanding Romneys tax return/s. Why don't they ask for all the crap that oblunder, Barry (AKA Barach Obama) Soetoro to the libs, has spent/is spending millions to keep hidden? You get three guesses, the last two don't count.
    'Desperate measures for Desperate Times' is a very accurate description of the actions of Obama's supporters. They realize that Obama can't run on his record. So, the only tactics left for them are spreading rumors, designed to smear Mitt Romney, who is going to be the next Amercan President.
