Some call it a popular summertime pastime for children and others are calling it distracting and offensive. One Denver neighborhood HOA is trying to put a stop to sidewalk chalk art.

“It’s definitely better than video games,” said Sarah Cohen, 3-year-old Emerson Cohen’s mother. “It’s a simple pleasure for her.”

as a brat living in base housing there were a lot of rules. you are right...common areas were usually off limits when it came to "personalizing" them. I looked into an gated community around here but never took it seriously, but this opened my eyes.....I will make sure i read the fine print. If I don't like it, I just won't live there. Folks that chose foul probably could never make it living on a military installation. Hell, a lot of the folks around me could not stand it. I had some issues during my rebellious years but my dad cured me of that.

read the entire story (you may need to read the entire story elsewhere as well) and them come back to me. You will see that the drawings were in the common areas...common areas are shared areas. There was no issue with her doing it in their driveway but according to the housing rules the common areas were not supposed to be messed with. while it may be a petty thing to complain about the innocent drawings of a three-year old that will wash away with the next rain (maybe, cuz some chalk colors stain for a while) the fact is that they joined that community and signed a contract that they will follow their rules...and a contract is a contract...period. On base, if we broke the rule, they would kick us out of base housing and while that is a few pros...the cons are way too many.

"because it is a shared space, anything that OFFENDS, DISTURBS or INTERFERES with the peaceful enjoyment isn’t allowed."

How is a little girl drawing cute flowers and hearts which will wash off in a few days anyways do any of the above.

Neighbours who complain about something like that, as the article claimed someone did, are the jerk kind who have something against the parents and want to make the lives of their neighbours as miserable as possible. I've had a neighbour like this, and this is the type of petty thing he complained about all the time.

you have a very good point, complaining is petty, but the rules aren't. I would never complain, but there are people out there that will and as long as the law is on their side, there is nothing, unfortunately, that can be done about it. personally i would love the folks who complained get their comeuppance.

NEVER got beat up. Went to DoDDS schools my whole life and that stuff is not tolerated. Kids are afraid to do that stuff. Oh, and I never blocked you because if I did, I could not be responding to your post.

Don't worry Ichi, the fact he said something like that proves that he was in fact the guy who got beat up in school. Then he resorts to calling me names....I find it curious how these guys love to act so brave behind their keyboard. I highly doubt he would say that my face once he saw me. he is just another eThug.

Just FYI, he was a volunteer football coach for my team my freshman year so I know him. dude is like, 6ft and 230...and solid....top that with his martial arts experience and well....i would hate to see the result. A coward, not likely, but he knows when to leave an argument. His motto is to "never argue with an idiot as bystanders might not be able to tell the difference." (got that from his facebook page, that is how I found Sodahead)

Damaged, how did you get that? I had a better education than the majority of Americans (Base schools) and lived in communities with thousands that are true patriots who are serving our country. If that is "damaged" then it appears you are against the military way of life. I say if you can't handle the military way of life, then that it probably why you are a whiner or a complainer. You can't handle rules, regulations and policies unless they suit your needs. Your comments and that of "Larry's" lead me to the assumption that you never served in the great US military.

that was taken outta context. I was able to watch a courts martial when I was 15. He brought me to it during my rebellious stage. He even had to get permission from his commander to do it.

I don't see anything wrong with it as long as the parents give the girl a bucket of soapy water and a scrub brush to clean up after she is through. Don't put this on the kid because that is what she is. Put it where it belongs and on the parents.

See what happens when small groups decide what's best for you? Let's go back to the time when people didn't have the choice to allow the sidewalk to be built there in the first place....now that actually is for public safety. Whatever happened to shielding small children from the real world? I wasn't shielded and I think I'm a better person for not having a culture shock, but this is just too much. Someone in Denver needs to do something
