Dems pushing to shut down and kill the government

iamnothere 2011/02/04 21:56:05
Senate Democrats warned Thursday of dire economic consequences if Congress fails to raise the US debt ceiling, saying it could prompt a shutdown of the federal government.

"It's playing with fire," said US Senator Chuck Schumer said of the legislative standoff.

If a shutdown were to occur, "citizens couldn't get their checks, veterans couldn't get their benefits, military payments would stop," the veteran New York lawmaker said.

Congress early in 2010 raised the US debt ceiling to nearly $14.3 trillion -- very near the current US debt of some $13.9 trillion dollars.

The government will run out of money in about two months' time, according to the US Treasury Department, unless Congress votes to raise the federal debt ceiling.

But while Democrats, along with most Republicans, agree on the need to avoid having the United States default on its debt, which likely would likely trigger a massive economic meltdown, some conservatives remain firmly against increasing ceiling.

They insist instead of that it is time for massive spending cuts and belt-tightening, and say that raising the debt ceiling further only forestalls needed austerity moves.

Illinois Senator Richard Durbin said a similar curtailment of government services today could "precipitate an economic crisis, driving up interest rates on mortgages, loans, businesses, families across America."

Durbin called it a "political tactic could kill our economic recovery and drive unemployment even higher."

Democrats noted that the last similar such standoff which led in 1995 to a brief government shutdown that was limited in scope, proved politically costly for Republicans after the public sided en masse with Democratic President Bill Clinton.

LOL, dems are fear mongering because they realize that, if the debt ceiling isn't raised, all those folks who have been living large on everyone elses money all these years are going to be turning on the Democrats for not upkeeping their livelyhood.

Might bring the Demonstrations to the offices of the Dems and Whitehouse, when they don't get their Obama Money!!

Good shut the government down. I'll bet it won't stop these senators and congressmen from getting paid. Still if the government is shut down that will stop it from screwing us over and stopping obummer care dead in its tracks which it should be anyway since it was ruled unconstitutional...............

Coming from a Senator who thinks the 3 branches of Of our republic are: Congress Senate and President..this debt ceiling reminds me of paying off your young adults credit card and giving it back...if it takes shutting down the government to make them understand we are broke, then so be it.

We should not raise the debt ceiling until we have cut every expense we can . Losing certain benefits is better than losing our country . A lot of people need to wake up.

You can't fix stupid but we can damn sure try to get rid of it.

Shut the fools down!! The only ones to stay aboard should be those that protect us PERIOD! The Military, CIA (what is left of it) FBI and ICE, and all others that PROTECT us! Other than that everyone else can shut the lights off and just go home.. Let them hit the bread line like the Normal folk.. I have Zero sympathy for any of them! Ohh and send the TSA home for good! Let the Military do it, they are much better at this than the TSA could ever imagine to be..It was wonderful after 9/11 when we had the State Police, FBI and Military personal wandering the terminals with their dogs and machine guns!

As shown in cities across the nation, a furlough day or week is one way to contain government costs. I don't see a problem with Washington closing its doors for a few days every month. Frankly, I don't see why they still deliver mail on Saturday, why they have overlapping agencies and why Congress gets perq's when the rest of us are treading water economically.
