Candidate Barack Obama promised to close the American prison in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, in 2008. President Obama signed an executive order to close Gitmo. Yet, Gitmo remains open because the president later saw the need to preserve the terrorist detention center off American soil.

The Democratic National Committee has made it a 2012 promise to close Gitmo. Should the president heed the demand from his political party? Or should Obama tell the party to remove the promise from its platform since he has no plans to fulfill its obligation?

NEWSMAX.COM reports: Repeating the 2008 pledge to close the prison camp at Guantanamo. “We are substantially reducing the population at Guantanamo Bay without adding to it. And we remain committed to working with all branches of government to close the prison altogether because it is inconsistent with our national security interests and our values.” However the platform omits the 2008 pledge to give terrorist suspects the right to challenge their detention.

They're only ACCUSED, let the panel judge. Intern them on Ellis Island and have public tribunals. Doing things behind closed doors only add to suspicion.

Most of them were only defending themselves from YOUR aggression. The spectacle (& photos) of your soldier humiliating naked prisoners is just adding fat to their fire, hence the escalating tit-for-tat pissing contest. Two wrongs don't make a right.

Did you forget that the CIA funded Osama bin Laden when the Soviets invaded Afghanistan? You also supported Saddam Hussein in the past too.

I don't want them in this country. If they close Gitmo, then I would hope they just shoot all the terrorists there. I have no interest in hearing anything they have to say.

They're only ACCUSED, and likely just defenders against paranoid troops. Whatever happened to "Innocent 'til Proven Guilty". Sounds more like a Lynch Mob here. Haven't seen Gibson's" The Patriot" that term's synonymous with 'Vigilante'.

terrorists a pass...Already one or two known terrorists have been given a pass and sent home to do more plotting against us....Why was that by the way, and certainly not under a Republican President....I guess those guys were Muslim buddies of you know who..

Gitmo is a blight to the US. Aside from that, it is pretty stupid for the Dem's to be pushing this issue. There are far more important things to worry about than war and terrorism. Sure, that was important 4 years ago. Today? Jobs, jobs, jobs...and I don't see any of us looking at Al Qaeda for job prospects.

Obama promised to close Gitmo in the first 90-days...no matter if it is on the platform or written on his teleprompter, Gitmo military POW encampment will remain open for business. One thing no one wishes to acknowledge is the fact that should Gitmo be closed there are plenty of allied encampments that have neither heard of "Constitutional Rights" or the Geneva Convention, where pictures of true torture will never see the light of AP and where water-boarding will be a pleasant wish compared to more persuasive techniques practiced beyond the reach of the ACLU. All-in-all the prisoners at Gitmo are in much better condition with it open than closed.
