Executive salaries began to rise around the same time as US manufacturing saw a shift towards a more technology-driven economy and a decrease of union power - which reduced the number of solid working-class jobs.

"This has been going on since the 1970s," Mr Nielsen says, saying that reversing the problem could take decades.

"The number of people who are middle class is getting smaller and smaller."

A Pew study released this month found that 85% of those who call themselves middle class say a middle class lifestyle is more difficult to maintain than it used to be.

Rising costs of living, combined with high unemployment and dwindling personal assets, leave fewer people in the middle class and more on the brink of financial insecurity.

There will always be inequality just as you will always have superior -vs- inferior. There will always be good hunters for the tribe and there will be poor hunters for the tribe. Sadly the success of the tribe depends on the successful hunter. The individual!

When Rich people can get away with putting their wealth in over-seas accounts, and take them off the tax dole, why are we needing to also give them tax cuts? What good is hoarding money? Republicans are rat, hoarding varmints, who cut American jobs, who refuse to create American jobs, and get away with calling themselves Americans. Clearly Mitt Romney is a Romulin Alien Rat Hoarding Varmint.

Disparity is currently our #1 problem.

The GOP believes the fix is to make is worse.

    End of story.

Some people are just better at living life than others, whether it be luck, talent, or whatever, we'll never all be equal...nor should we be, as that's just the way life is. Penalizing those do make it, all but eliminates the desire to succeed.

I do not think anyone suggests it should be perfectly "equal", but we are on the exact opposite extreme right now with massive, world leading disparity.

Humans wish to "succeed" no matter where the top bar happens to be. Always will. It is a part of being human. Find a society, no matter their disparity levels, and you will have humans still wanting to "succeed".

If you really want to have people lose hope in being able to succeed, introduce massive disparity (done!). We continue to pool our resources at the top, and to people that continue to make the rules that pushes even more their way through taking from those with ever decreasing opportunities to "succeed". Welcome to our two-tiered society, where half our most precious resource (healthy, educated citizens) are being left to the waste bin, completely hopeless. Where "succeeding" is defined by simply surviving. Class movement is now the stuff of legends and Hollywood movies. This harms the ENTIRE nation.

Lastly, every single statistic on the matter shows we do far, far better with less disparity. It is clear as day.

The top income tax rate was 91% when Eisenhower, a Republican, was in the WH.

Just what don't you understand about the phrase "ALL BUT eliminate"??? It in no way means the same as "eliminate". In fact, it means that the ONLY thing NOT eliminated, is the desire to succeed.
