Deal reached to avoid government shutdown

☥☽✪☾DAW ☽✪☾ 2011/04/09 03:10:04
the White House and congressional leaders have reached agreement to cut billions of dollars in spending to avoid the first government shutdown in 15 years

he Obama administration readied hundreds of thousands of furlough notices for federal workers, to be released if no deal was reached by a midnight deadline to keep operations running.

"We know the whole world is watching us today," said Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., and into the night the two sides were still swapping proposals from opposite wings of the Capitol in search of an elusive agreement.

Republicans placed the House on standby for a late-night vote, in case a decision was made to seek a stopgap bill to keep the government running for a few days to allow more time for negotiations.

Reid, President Barack Obama and House Speaker John Boehner all agreed a shutdown posed risks to an economy still recovering from the worst recession in decades. But there were disagreements aplenty among the principal players in an early test of divided government — Obama in the White House, fellow Democrats in control in the Senate and a new, tea party-flavored Republican majority in the House.

The Tea Party has held America hostage over the nonexistent abortion issue. Insisting on cutting peanuts from the budget rather than tackling the larger issues of subsidies, foreign aid and defense spending.

The Tea Party has proven to be a bunch of ideological wimps who do not have the good of the nation at heart.

Dear Congress, Last year I mismanaged my funds and this year I can not decide on a budget. Until I have come to a unified decision that fits all of my needs and interests, I will have to shut down my checkbook and will no longer be able to pay my taxes and financial responsibilities. I'm sure you'll understand. Thank you very much for setting an example we can all follow.

Pretty pathetic if you ask me. Took them 6 months into this fiscal year to come up with a budget for this year. Maybe by the end of 2012 we will come up with that years budget.

The RINO's-in-disguise are just as guilty. They're not really different, they're just trying to make you believe that they are. You want a conservative whose REALLY for change? Ask them about corporate welfare, legalization, regulation and taxation of vice, and what it takes to keep our noses out of everyone else's business.

Are you blind? I'll concede your claim but you have to admit that they aren't tackling the budget problem. Any idiot not connected to congress could go through the budget and cut more than $400 billion without touching any domestic program.

Les.....Americans would be more than grateful for your input about being able to easily cut 400 billion. If you have some great ideas send them to the right people and lets all pull together on this. It has to start somewhere. Any positive input would be much appreciated.

Get a copy of the 2012 budget and let's start chopping.

Begin with congressional salaries and benefits then move on to Gates' request for a leaner defense budget, cutting all foreign assistance for military purposes and cutting corporate subsidies are a place to start.

Start repaying what the government owes Social Security and start investing it in the market instead of the instruments with the poorest return, treasuries.

John Kennedy's tax legislation put America on an even keel and the progressive taxes passed in 1964 and 1965 should be reinstated. Income earners should pay according to ability so that the tax burden isn't on the middle class. It worked then, it'll work today.

    I completely agree!
Tax breaks for the rich bug the fuck out of me because I know it really could help. They have the money to fork over more cash and still be able to live comfortably. They're making it seem like a tax raise is the end of their paycheck, bullshit! EVERYONE needs to sacrifice, besides... I can't see a true patriot being more concerned about the state of his paycheck (considering their well off and not struggling to make a living) rather than the state of America.

Oh I know, the republicans are going to push further to just get rid of all the programs that keeps people from leveling all the forests for housing and exploitation, kills all the fish in our oceans and will leave us with no food and no wilderness left. But that is ok for them because the people are making money, what happens when there is no paper left to print money on?

As fucked up as it sounds, greedy people who'd bull doze everything in their path with little to no regard for others really deserve to be kicked off this planet.

Maybe we can ship all of them to an island and dump a shit load of realistic counterfeits...
