Dallas Mavericks Win NBA Championship: Are You Happy?

SodaHead Sports 2011/06/13 15:38:14
You!

The Dallas Mavericks took the NBA trophy home -- and SB Nation isn't that surprised.

The Dallas Mavericks are the 2011 NBA Champions, beating the Miami Heat in six games. But that's not an indictment of building around superstars. In fact, it bolsters the current paradigm.

It's no secret that the Miami Heat got some...well, heat...for building their newly revamped team around big superstars just to win a championship. Parts of the team even sacrificed their usual pay in order to bring on the superstar players.

So does the Mavericks win mean that focusing on superstars doesn't always work? As SB Nation points out, maybe not.

Dirk Nowitzki was named the NBA Finals MVP and he is also the highest paid basketball star on the team. The team also had one of the highest payrolls in basketball for 10 seasons straight.

No matter what you think of either team, stardom exists everywhere. But we congratulate the Dallas Mavericks on their win regardless.

Are you happy the Mavericks won?

Shows that the game is played on the court and that championships can't be purchased. Miami had no legitimate 6th man and absolutely no bench depth. I don't care who you have as your superstars, you can't play them 40+ minutes a game while the other team is able to rest their marquee players and keep them fresh with a deep bench. Let's see if Mickey Arison spend another $300 million on bench depth.

Couldn't agree more. For me it was a choice between who I wanted to lose more; Lebron or Cuban. Since Lebron actually plays I voted against him. Lol. The Mavs have a lot of good guys on the team as well, compared to the overinflated egos on the Heat..

It seems "the better team" is the one that is able to disrupt the rhythm of their opponent. There is a reason that the NBA championship is based upon a series and not a single game. It is far more likely that the better team will win a series than a single game. Miami lost the series Dallas is the better team.

The Heat had to face all those obstacles because they tried to steal a championship. They did not try to earn it like Jordan and other great players. They tried to throw together an all-star team so Lebron could somehow prove he wasn't a choker. Funny, the smallest guy on the court outplayed Lebron. White guys can jump!

The players themselves did the shopping. Other players on the Heat took a pay cut. I think it was Michael Jordan who said he wanted to beat his rivals and never considered teaming up with them to make his job easier. That is why Lebron will never realistically ever be considered in the same league with Jordan. Wilt Chamberlain was the most dominant player ever and because of a lack of championships Bill Russell is considered by many to be the better player. Either way neither of them tried to stack the deck. Lebron will never have the numbers of Wilt or the 11 championships of Russell. He will never have the strong combination of the two of a Michael Jordan.

I don't doubt the Heat will be back. I think many of us will consider it half a championship if and when they do win. Just some sports fans opinions. You have yours and that is what makes sports so much fun. The opinions, the competition, and the rivalries of players and fans.

Chamberlain was the most dominant center of his era, they changed the rules making the 3 second zone because of him. Russell played on the smarter more talented teams. Smarter teams usually win whether the old Celtics, the Knicks of 73 or Mavs in this series. Wade and James have the high BB IQ, Bosh is overrated one dimensional (great scorer, avg rebounder, poor defender). The Mavs turned the ball over less, shot 3s with great accuracy but did have a helping hand from the refs to win the close games. James got no calls, reminded me of Jabbar getting beat up by Willis Reed in 69. Wade finally got angry at the refs in the last game on a false charging call, took a T.

Best Team? They had the chance to take home the trophy. The failed. LeBron wilted in the fourth. The guy wasn't a producer in the playoffs in Cleveland and he wasn't for Miami.

Whining about the media is a cop out. LeBron made his "decision" the media event of the summer. You can't do that and whine about media criticism, thats ridiculous. Had he just signed with the Heat like a normal player, no criticism.

Of course then theres things like mocking Dirk for being sick and that sort of crap too. So I'd say the Heats issues are self inflicted and they clearly aren't the best team in the NBA. Right now that would be the Mavs.

But you have to know the kind of lynching LeBron had to deal with ALL SEASON, wore on him and his family; he's only 26 years old, you know the booing, throwing stuff at him, cursing his family; he probably didn't have a clue what his free agent decision would result in; I think I would have taken my marbles and walked away; he's a helluva man for hanging in.

First of all I think the use of lynching is an awful exageration, and just a generally poor piece of phrasing.

He got flack for waiting until the very last minute of FA and turning it into a media spectacle where he left his hometown team. People get booed for everything. Only an idiot wouldn't have known that creating that sort of spectacle and leaving the Cavs in that sort of lurch would have both brought him fair criticism of his behavior and the emotional anger that comes from that sort of act.

Again, when free agency struck he could have quickly decided in private to move to Miami and signed there, holding the typical sort of press conference mid day thanking Miami for the chance to play and thanking Cleveland for his time there. No muss, no fuss. Something a lot of superstars do. That would have given Cleveland adequate time to take the money they were going to use on him and go after other players.

He acted like a child that wanted all the attention and he really screwed over the team he was leaving. And you have to factor in national sports mentality. As little boys we all grow up dreaming of playing for our home town team. I'd have loved to played for the STL Cardinals and I'm sure you had a local team you'd have loved to have been on. Well he took that childhoo...

Well he took that childhood dream and not only abandoned it - but then actually hurt the team on the way out leaving them in the lurch.

Look, you're a completely blind homer. I get that. You're a Heat fan and you feel the need to rationalize because your team came out on the better end. But just sit back and accept it, in the basketball world LeBron and the Heat are now the villains. They're soft. LeBron took D Wade and took him down when they were caught on camera mocking Dirks ailment. You're the basketball version of the Pats. America hates the Pats because they win, they have an unlikable coach and they're percieved as cheaters after camera gate. Well, the Heat and NBA villainy. They talk too much. LeBron breaks some of those sports codes average fans believe in. And at the end of the day the Heat gave in. Not because they got booed too much. Just because Bron Bron isn't a good playoff player - a problem he had well before moving and in fact might be the reason for the move. He doesn't want to be "the guy" anymore. Thats Wades job. Bron Bron wants to be Pippen.

All I know is the Mavs are the best team this year. Go lick your wounds and work on Bron Bron and see if he can get it done next year.

Uh uh . . . nice try. "ESPN did that"? So they had a LeBron stand in? That wasn't him sitting there?

Yeah. I gave my parents fair notice so they could get used to the idea. And I had started thinking about it well before I was prepared to move. And I was 24 at the time.

He knew when his contract was up. He knew this "decision" was coming. He had ample time to way the pros and cons of staying or going. And hes old enough to know the difference between right and wrong and whats insulting and whats not. He's not 18. He's 26. He's well into adult hood. Especially in terms of the game. He's been in the finals before. Been in deep runs in the playoffs. Making a lot of money as an image of the game - as a role model of the game. He knew better. Stop trying to create lame excuses and just accept it for what it is. LeBron isn't a class act.

If by best team, you mean looks best on paper, yes the Heat were the best. If you mean by best team, the team with the most super stars, yes the Heat were the best. If you mean by best team, the team with the most All NBA players or NBA All Stars, then the Heat was the best team.

But, if you mean by best team the team with the heart and the will to dominate the 4th quarter, no contest the Mavericks were the best team. If by best team you mean the team best able to beat the other, then the Mavericks were by far the best team. If you mean by best team the team best able to win games against the other team, then the Mavericks were the best team. If by best team, you mean the team with the superstar best able to dominate the 4th quarter and crunch time, then the Mavericks were the best team. If by best team you mean the team best able to play as a team versus a group of individuals, then the Mavericks are the best.

The Heat are a great team, but not as good as the Mavericks this year, this post season. The Mavs beat the heat 6 out of 8 meetings. They dominated the 4th quarter. Dirk had more points in crunch time than the whole heat team. The heat may be kings of the shoulda, woulda, coulda's, but the Mavs of the kings of did it.

The Heat are a realtively young team and if they are kept together should have many chances to get it right. The Mavs aren't that young, but they finally did get it right this year and in impressive fashion.
