LOS ANGELES (AFP) — Grammy-winning singer Daddy Yankee voiced his support for John McCain on Monday as the Republican presidential candidate described Democratic rival Barack Obama as an "honorable opponent."

Daddy Yankee, whose real name is Ramon Ayala, appeared with the Arizona senator in front of around 100 students at Phoenix's Central High School, the alma-mater of McCain's wife Cindy.

Ayala said he was supporting McCain because of his support for immigration reform. "I'm here to support senator McCain," Ayala said.

"I believe in his ideals and his proposals to lead this nation. He's been a fighter for the Hispanic community and I know he's the best candidate because he's been a fighter for the immigration issue."

McCain meanwhile paid tribute to bitter rival Obama as the Democrats prepared to open their convention in Denver.

"This is a tough presidential campaign we're in," McCain said. "I have a very honorable opponent. There are stark differences between us."

Puerto Ricans in PR can't vote for prez. They have to register for the draft, they fight in wars for the US, they elect one 'non-voting' representative to congress but they are US citizens. If they move to the states, they have all priveledges and can vote plus they will begin paying federal tax. There are large communities of 'Ricans' all over the US and many like myself, have always lived as a 'typical white person'.
Puerto Ricans are very proud of who they are and of their people who have made it here. Daddy Yankee will be influencial.

I'm Puerto Rican and I vote. Not every Puerto Rican lives in Puerto Rico and he represents the Hispanic community, not just Puerto Ricans

More Puerto Ricans live in the States than in Puerto Rico. He represents Hispanics and Americans. That's pretty logical.

    I saw his endorsement....
It takes a lot for a celerbity to endorse a Republican.... they take a lot of crap for it, so, when they do, I have a lot of respect for them....
