From earlier Thursday in Maryland, the crowd at a health care rally cheers wildly as President Obama delivers one of his strongest messages of the entire health care debate in support of the public option:
(If you're reading the tea leaves, note that for the second time this week, President Obama touted the public option without mentioning the possibility of compromise.)
A few minutes earlier, President Obama had mentioned the work being done by Max Baucus...and the crowd had a decidedly different reaction: it booed.

The two different reactions by the crowd tell you pretty much everything you need to know about the politics of where this debate should be headed.

Jeremiah September 17, 2009 18:14:47+2The “Max Tax” deserves a quick demise. The six of them huddled all that time for such a complete giveaway to the insurance industry? Baucus is in the insurance companies' pockets, but I am surprised at the others, especially Olympia Snowe. Obama needs to disregard this travesty and get on with promoting the public option.

To sum up, the Baucus-Obama plan would increase the cost of insurance and then force people to buy it, requiring subsidies. Those subsidies would be paid for by taxes that make health care and thus insurance even more expensive, requiring even more subsidies and still higher taxes. It's a recipe to ruin health care and bankrupt the country, and that's even before liberal Democrats see Mr. Baucus and raise him, and then attempt to ram it all through the Senate.
And therein lies the primary problem of any Republicans getting on board at this point with a "bi-partisan" proposal. Before it's over, a committee proposal has to get through the full Senate...and then it will inevitably be made even worse in a conference committee with the liberals from the House of Representatives. Which means that the final product would look a whole lot closer to the current House version than anything most Americans would prefer to see become law
