Could You Go a Month Without Spending Anything?

It's always good to practice responsible spending, but could you do what Bob Dunning and his family of six decided to do? Falling on tough times, Dunning pitched the idea of "Frugal Fridays" to his family -- no spending money on Fridays, whatsoever. Now it's turned into "Frugal February" -- they vowed not to spend a single penny for the entire month.

Of course, they had to stock up first. They bought bulk amounts of butter, nuts, bread, pasta, rice, fruits, vegetables, peanut butter and jelly, frozen meat, etc. -- all the essentials. Then they buckled down and nailed their wallets shut. They're not even buying gas, opting to walk where they need to. Shelley Dunning told ABC News, "I hope that this will reset our clock. I hope that we can look back and say, 'Gosh, we had a lot of fun with each other.'"

Yes I could. It would be a snap for me. I always have enough food stocked up, that I could go 3 or 4 months. I burn a tank of gasoline about every 2 or 3 months. My electric and phone is always paid a month ahead. If not for phone and electric, I could go over 3 months. What is Bob Dunning and family doing about their utilities?

I could start right now and I don't have that much food on hand . I don't have a car and I rarely buy clothing. It would be easy. I'd like to challenge people with busy schedules to go without a car for a week to see if they can do it.. That's a challenge.

It might be a stretch but I think I could do it... especially in the summer here in MN, all kinds of stuff to do outdoors and you can walk or ride your bike just about anywhere.

No, too far and I pick my grandson up at school after work every day. His school is 2 miles away from my workplace and work is 9 miles from home.

I guess you could get one of those 200 mile per gallon mopeds, just make sure you had 5 gallon can of gasoline at home.

Not only "yes" I could, but "yes", I am. I was laid off my 3rd job since the Savior of progressives all over the country took office. If it would do any good to blame Bush on any of this, I would, but we have to base this on the CURRENT POTUS, since he is the one running the Titanic (USA) into the abyss (hell). It's one thing taking over the ship after it's crashed (a lot of holes to fill, etc.), but when the captain hires hoodlums & cronies to sink it & try to cover it up, then that's an entirely different matter. Obama has not even tried to get us out of this debacle & seems to be doing his best to make it worse! I wake up every morning wondering what freedom his policies has removed from us today. If I can stop the spending in my household, the government can do the same.

Yes, obama's goal even before he was Illinois senator, was to destroy and bring down the United States of America. His blind supporters can't see and don't care. They are just like the people in George Orwell's book, 1984.

Well, not without incurring late charges on utility bills anyway. We don't really need to spend much other than on utilities at any time.

If you pay your utilities as soon as possible, you will have a 2 month window without being late. That's the way I pay all my bills.

I have, many, many, many months. I'd rather not, but I don't have a choice seeing employers don't seem to want to hire anyone, not even for part-time at $8 an hour. Will be 5 years of absolutely no work for me this June, since Graduation in 2007 (I'm not counting the paltry sum of $600-$1,000 I made from UPS Peak Seasons '08, '09 and '10). Trust me, it's better to be able to earn money and to be able to get the things you need... and some that you want. It sucks being in your 20's without a job and prospect for a future, having to mooch off your parents. Truly, really sucks. I don't recommend it.

I could go a month without wasteful spending, but I get my fresh fruit/veggies at the farmers market each week; easily though I could cut out things like coffee and lunching out (which are rare anyway, but who doesn't want to grab coffee/lunch with friends from time to time?). It's great if you can do it, but you are still buying what you would have anyway (with the exception of gas) because you're stocking up on everything you expect to need the month before.

Its practically impossible. You would have to live off cans and nonperishables for the month because fresh fruits and veggies don't last that long. I would still have to go out and buy nesessities. I wouldn't have enough money to spend the month before to prepare for a month of not spending.

I still have to pay the utilities, the gasoline, for anything that breaks, the food, the doctor, etc. ... I do save money all the time ... I cut my fabric softener sheets in half ... Carry my lunch ... Eat less in general to save on food bill and help with my health ... Work as close to home as possible ... Wear as many of my clothes twice if I can ... Almost never eat out ... Pick up change off the street when I walk the dogs ... Pick up cans too ... I shop the grocery ads ... I pay only 25 cents for my shirts, slacks, coats, and jeans ... I only buy my undies new ... Shoes I have not bought in a long time ... Cars never new ... Drive 20 to 30 miles per hour to save on gas ... 47 on freeways in the slow lane ... Keep it colder in the house to save on heating ... Pick up things people throw away and sell them at yard-sales ... Give me some more ideas if you have any ... I need to as frugal as possible because Intel laid my husband off after he had a stroke and no one hires you when you are older anyway, stroke or not ... I did not finish college and was a stay at home mom so when I had to go back to work I just don't make that much money ... Have to be frugal ...

I know exactly where you're coming from. I got laid off June 2010 and hunt diligently for a job, but no one wants you after you are about 45, it has been my experience. They just have too many applicants now that are younger, and they are able to pay them less, plus their insurance costs way less. Seems like you have done about everything I can think of to save money, and I thought I was frugal, but you have me beat by a long shot. Of course, it's way easier for me since I am single and have no one else to support, no kids, or older parents still alive, etc. And, I am surely blessed by God here, both my younger brother's and sister's families each earn over $60,000 a year, so they don't ask me for help. lol

Good luck finding a job ... It is John's health that is our main problem ... First he had the mild stroke so he has been out of work for the last 4 or 5 years and then he fell last summer and had a head injury ... 3 weeks in the hospital and 3 weeks in a nursing home ... He is getting better all the time ... After a year looking for a job he applied and got Disability ... No one was going to hire someone that had a stroke ... Like you said there are younger people out there with less health problems ... So I hope you can get a job and start saving for your old age ... We had to retire too early so we did not save enough ... We were caught between the expense of aging parents and children in college that we did not save enough ...

Well, living expenses here in the Bible belt aren't all that high. My mortgage payments, since my dad passed in 2003, and I bought the house from my brother and sister (their shares), are only $518 a month. I don't need much to survive, of course, I have no health problems or continuing medical expense of any treatments, drugs, etc. I figure with my small GE retirement check plus SS I can pay the bills, and that's all I am seeking to do. I recently realized I am a poor person, have been all my life, and there's no use in denying it. They say the average wage for a male in this country is about twice what I was making the past 12 years, so I don't know how that is possible. The highest wage must be so high it's astronomical compared to the lowest for the average to be $40,000.
I am sorry you have had such a rough time of it. My uncle passed in 2006 after having some strokes, which no one knew about actually at first, and that made it worse, but he was only hospitalized less than a year at the last. Just a few months actually. He lost consciousness for a few weeks before it was all over, so he did not suffer much.
