According to Yahoo News, a couple argued about how much money they were spending on food every month and decided to see if they could eat for a whole month while only spending $30 per person!

on the menu:
Oatmeal with butter for breakfast EVERY DAY

PB&J; sandwich with 1 tablespoon each peanut butter and jelly on homemade bread for lunch.

Beans, rice and tortillas for dinner.

They drank Tang for the vitamin C....

The couple lost lots of weight, the man says he lost 14lbs! NOT HEALTHY!

Could you do it?

I can hunt for food and find plants to eat for free. I don't have the want to spend the time doing that or the need. I can afford the food I eat and will continue my current "see food" diet.

But it probably wouldn't be the best idea. I saw that article. That's crazy! But yay for them for accomplishing it! If I lost 14 lbs. in a month I'd be in the hospital.

Easily. And what's not healthy about it? If you plan your diet correctly and make sure you're getting all the different nutrients you need, you shouldn't have to spend more than even $20 a month - if you know where to shop.

I was referring to the rapid weight loss when I said it wasn't healthy... sorry for the misunderstanding...

    Ah, okay.

14 lbs in a month sounds like a lot, but what was his starting weight? If he weighed 350 lbs to start with, losing 14 in a month is very healthy. If he weighed 175, not so much.

I own a small place that has 3500 acres of bottomland that starts at my back fence. The first thought that pops into my head when asked if I could eat on 30 dollars a month is whether I will have enough change leftover from my ammo purchase to afford toothpicks. head eat 30 dollars change leftover ammo purchase afford toothpicks

We have to have a head of lettuce every day..at $1.80 a pop. We have eggs and or cereal for breakfast..a healthy dinner with a lot of veggies. My husband is diabetic and has to have 4 meals a day and 2 fruits a day. So no way is it even possible to eat on $30.00 a month...not to mention milk and butter.

I use to do it. I'd buy in bulk at the cannery the dented cans...lots of coupons and spend only about $5.00 per week. It would be harder in Hawaii as prices are almost double on some products so that offsets the quantity. I still make my own jams and jellies from mountain fruits and berries and there are lots of other fruits that grow wild like Avocado's, mango, macadamia nuts, ginger, taro, bread fruit, heart of palm....free shampoo from wild Shampoo Ginger. The Avocado is good to keep the good fat on, it's an incredible moisturizer and mask for the body to keep younger, the bread fruit can be baked in a fire, and there are plenty of small crabs on the shoreline, fish on the reefs.
Sure you could survive and might not need the $30.00.

you should be careful buying dented cans, that compromises the safety of the product. there is a risk of botulism in dented cans.

I worked for 12 years for a cannery...I know what's good and whats not.
There is expansion room in the can to allow for a dent. If there are no punctures and the can is not creased and is just dented it is fine. I have had them all my life. I also have canned food my whole life and there can be botulism there too but I know what to watch for just like Grandmas day when we didn't have canned food plentiful.

There was a time when I was alone with my 2 children due to me leaving an abusive ex and trying to make ends meet ....
I would make sure they got good dinners, but thank God the school supplied free breakfast and lunch for them!
I ate, every day, for almost a year ...
Breakfast : Slim Jim and a Squirt Lunch: Popcorn Dinner: Top Ramen or Popcorn.
It was a rough time and I wouldn't wish it on anyone!
