Could warp drive be a scientific reality in our lifetimes?

YES! Here I come, exoplanets!
I just don't think so.

"HOUSTON — A warp drive to achieve faster-than-light travel — a concept popularized in television's Star Trek — may not be as unrealistic as once thought, scientists say.

A warp drive would manipulate space-time itself to move a starship, taking advantage of a loophole in the laws of physics that prevent anything from moving faster than light. A concept for a real-life warp drive was suggested in 1994 by Mexican physicist Miguel Alcubierre; however, subsequent calculations found that such a device would require prohibitive amounts of energy.

Now physicists say that adjustments can be made to the proposed warp drive that would enable it to run on significantly less energy, potentially bringing the idea back from the realm of science fiction into science."

Personally, I think the government either has or is not far from having a suitable energy source. They already are working with anti-matter technology. Its possible they have devised a method of using it as fuel.

Or who knows? Maybe a viable version of this technology exists? Its hard to tell with how secretive our government is.

I believe that enough about physics is understood for warp drive to be a reality before the decade is out. However, anything that cool would undoubtedly be kept from the public.

    Just ask Nikola Tesla

Yes and so could the transporter.

I don't think so. I would be afraid it wouldn't put me back together again. A transporter with the right filters might be able to filter out disease.

I'd mostly be afraid that every time I used it, I would die and be replaced with a new copy of myself who thought it was the original me.

Unfortunately, there really is no way to prove that you don't die every time you transport.

Since there is a data stream and a matter stream, the matter is your matter and should still be you.

It's the "should" that troubles me. I don't think that I would ever take that risk.

I get people that would...I'm just not one of them.

A scientific reality isn't necessarily a technological one. So yes, we could have warp theory in our lifetimes. The real question is, will our society self-destruct before we can make it happen?

The downside of our societies self destructing is appalling. On the other hand on the Upside, it would mean at long long last, the total obliteration of the fugging British Monarchy.

No problem. I don't know if the claims in the article are right, of course...but it seems that the research covered shows how the fuel/power problem you mention may not be the case.

In my life tme - no. You the next 200 years, no. May be we can come up with a way to traverse distance without pushing matter past the speed of light. I do not want to under estimate human ingenuity for invention, so will keep an open mind.

I think you'd need some kind of exotic matter or energy to be able to do this...we don't have it yet...but after reading a little bit of this article makes me think we may be closer than I thought.!!!! Cooool!!!!

The article makes me thing that we actually DON'T need that exotic source...it seems that the sheer amount of "fuel" was the thing that prevented this from happening in the past (well...besides the whole engineering issues, of course). The new calculations seem to indicate that we CAN do it with fuel we already have. We just don't know how to do it, of course, at all.

I can't wait to hear of the results from White's table top experiment...if we can figure this out it would literally save the human race me thinks...of course every new advancement opens up new problems...we'll have to wait and see I guess.
