When Pope Benedict XVI announced he was stepping down last week, the news sent shockwaves through the world. Not soon after his announcement did speculation come as to why he really was stepping down. After that, now many are wondering who can and will replace Pope Benedict XVI.
There are a variety of candidates as the search begins, following Pope Benedict XVI becoming the first pontiff in six centuries to step down. A formal, new title has yet to be decided for the soon-to-be former Pope. Given the unexpected news, there is a possibility that the new Pope could finally come from the United States of America.
However, some experts and historians believe that it would be too controversial for an American to take on the important and prestigious position. That belief mainly comes from the American church's less than favorably reputation in recent years, due to stunning sexual abuse allegations and scandals. Scandals shouldn't affect those who are innocent of wrongdoing, but perception can be reality for decision makers as historian Christopher Bellitto tells ABC News: "The American church . . . comes with a lot of baggage."
