Well yes it could but not in short term and I don't see the point. The only countries that could are Russia and China but they would not be able to occupy the territory for very long before they get repelled and probably attacked right after. Besides...I don't see what they could gain at doing that even if they completely succeeded.

Plus they would likely end up being at war with America's allies which are:

Albania, Belgium, Bulgaria, Canada, Croatia, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Iceland, Italy, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Turkey and United Kingdom

    America + NATO = 73% of world's military spending.

Could some country try to invade us: Yes

Could any country occupy us and hold our lands: No

The traditional model of a land invasion is essentially impossible for use against the USA--we have far to many lines of sight and there is no effective way to get a significant human presence to our continent before we could to strike back. The most any invading country could do is cause some serious damage to a minimal area, only to be repelled and targeted for a significant missile campaign.

I think they could get deep into American mainland if it was an uncalled invasion but they could not hold it for very long....And with modern satellites and radar they would be seen days before they actually invade which would make the task even more complicated. The only way they could really invade USA without being repelled would be to cause a nationwide failure of the defence system which would require a coordinated pirate attack from many different locations in the world then I guess they would have to maintain the crisis for a few days and get troops to the shores before the systems go back on. I guess if they can manage to do that they could invade...But I doubt they could occupy and hold the territory for more than a few weeks. The American people is one of the most armed in the world so before they could establish population and gun control this would require a change of regime which would take months and pockets of resistance would form among former marines, captured marines in military prisons and even among civilian population. The invader would have to control all of the weapons, armoured and aerial equipment because even if they occupy a 10,000 people town for example, just about 50 trained men taking back 10 tanks and a few helicopters could in some way take back the city if their plan is well coordinated. Holding a country like America is a task worthy of an empire that doesn't exist at the moment.

Exactly, and there is no financial incentive large enough for any entity to go through so much expense to get.

In short: a traditional invasion is impossible.

PS. Modern American defense systems are incredibly distributed and most of them are too highly encrypted for any cyber-disruption, thus there is essentially no likelihoods of an immediate and totally disabling attack on our defense systems. I think that the only possibility of this happening were to be a takeover of the Pentagon, with an accompanying capture of the nuclear go-codes, all executed fast enough that there is no time to rescind authorization (an essentially impossible threat).

Well, you can never say never :-p but I'm 99.999999999999% sure it can't happen at all. Plus...I don't see what any nation would have to gain by doing that even if they actually succeeded. This would require a major change in their economic and political system and they would have to establish a totalitarian puppet government that would have to stay in place for many decades. They couldn't really assimilate the local 300,000,000 citizens to a new culture since USA is not close to their country. There is no border connection and thus, massive immigration from the overlord country would be almost impossible.

So much trouble for nothing useful for them. I could say you guys are in a very advantaging position.

Ultimately, any occupation would be useless and the only logical reason a country would want to destroy the USA is to remove it as a global hegemon of military power--if they wanted to take over (ex. China), first they must remove the largest global power that might balance them out.

That said, the infinitesimal probability of such an event means that this is simply a thought experiment in global military power.

I bet the Chinese could if they wanted and we would probably be pushed back to the rockies before we could slow them down.

It's invaded every day ... by insects, plants, Mexicans, etc., but no army will ever invade the U.S. again.

Russian troops??? If America is invaded it will not be an army of troops you will be fighting, it will be an army of hackers, cyber war. Hackers can enable anything dependent on computers, and that includes the National Grid, the financial system and the Defence System, all thrown into chaos....not one single shot being fired !!!

We already are. Our Southern border has been open so long with millions of people crossing over. I'm sure some of them are sleepers just waiting. There is no telling what could be hiding in Mexico waiting on the signal to head this way and still our government both Republican and Democrat refuses to arm this very vulnerable border.

It's a distinct possibility the more the US military is deployed abroad fighting unwinnable wars and not stationed here to protect US borders. If there were to ever be a time America was at it's weakest and most prone to invasion it would be under this president. His anti-American sentiments and lack of leadership could bring this country to it's knees in the face of all out invasion.

...and Bush was a paragon of strength and military discipline? Obama is unbelievably hawkish and has had more success in the use of black-ops than any other president.

Don't let your hatred of Obama overshadow your reason.

Russia could come down from the north and China could come up from the south, perhaps using Brazil as a staging area, but the only way I can see it being successful is if it was in tandem together but it would be highly unlikely that any territory could be held for any reasonable length of time. Especially since our allies and bases would be able to counter attack from their rear into their homelands. Invading us would most likely begin a World War.

On the other hand I don't think we could successfully invade either of those countries either. This is probably why China and Russia are focusing more on an economic "cold war" rather than outright military force. What happens if Chinese or Russian currency becomes the global standard rather than the American Dollar? I think that would be more effective than a military invasion/occupation.
