Could a Relatively Unknown Mormon, Jon Huntsman, Have a Chance Running Against Obama in 2012?

Jon Huntsman has a few challenges ahead of him. The first is that he is not well known in the national political sphere outside his post as ambassador to China.

Former Utah Gov. Jon Huntsman was expected to formally announce his presidential candidacy Tuesday, just months after stepping down as President Obama's ambassador to China.

Second is that he is a Mormon.

A Gallup poll released Monday found that one in five Americans said they would not vote for their party's nominee for president if that person was a Mormon.

But if the US economy doesn't see improvement soon, Obama will be vulnerable, and Huntsman has personal wealth and a possible independent following could see him having a chance. What do you think?

Some unknown by the name of Barack Obama managed to knock front-runner Hillary Clinton to become the party's nominee. Albeit with the help of the DNC.

I hope not. (I hope he's not the nominee, but I'd prefer almost anything to Obama.)

Huntsman's the quintessential RINO. (Why else would Obama pick him as an ambassador to China?) I heard him being interviewed on a radio talk-show. He gave "moderate" Republican (Democrat-lite) nu-speak non-answers for just about everything. (He also supported stronger gun-control and was for re-instating the repeating-rifles ban (assault-rifles as the libs like to call them. Although my repeating .22 Remington I got when I was twelve years old qualifies as an "assault-rifle" under that law.)

Anyway, Huntsman's a RINO's RINO. I doubt he can get the nomination, but if he does I'd have to seriously think about if I could vote for him even running against Obama.

I do not think he would have a chance of beating him & all that would happen is a lot of people just would not vote,& as I see it we will have President Obama for another term & as he said he needs another term to finished what has been started,& I am not sure just what that is.

Went with undecided as the question has mixed elements. I do think a relatively unknown could win next year if the person championed the right positions and could articulate clearly and effectively their views. I also don't think that being a Mormon is a reason someone wouldn't be competitive, whether referring to Huntsman or Romney. Having said all that, I don't think Huntsman has a chance because his liberal positions on several issues would make it impossible to get the nomination. Even if he were to get the nomination because of goofy open primaries in some states he would lose in the general because there would be little enthusiasm for him from what should be his base. Whenever a Republican tries to win independent votes by going liberal they lose more votes from the base who say why bother voting for someone who is going to act like a Dem if elected.

He could probably beat Obama in 2012 if given the nomination, but he's not going to get it, and it's because he's a moderate (RINO) and relatively unknown.

Huntsman is a liberal, his family donates to Harry Reid. They donated $25,000 to him, anyone that has a family that donates to Reid won't get votes from conservatives. Harry Reid even endorsed him as a better candidate than Romeny. After I found out about the donations I knew why he got support from him. No thanks, to the Rino.

He's too liberal.......Unfortunately the GOP and the conservative Tea Partiers are so divided right now, they're gonna hand Obama a win on a silver platter come 2012......Newt Gingrich is the ONLY one that can beat Obama in a one on one debate.....and the only one smart enough to get us back on strong economic footing.....and to right the foreign policy that Obama has destroyed......unfortunately America turned their backs on the winning candidate......Obama will serve 4 more years my friends.....

The republican party is much too divided right now....True, Obama SHOULD be easily beat, but the GOP is gonna hand him a win on a silver platter....Paul and Bachman are gonna divide the votes.....Romney is the only one that can even come close to beating Obama,,,,,the voters forget Obama has 43% of the voters in his pocket to begin with.....if Paul or Bachman decide to run as an independent, Obama will win....the Perot factor....we forget Clinton won in ;92 with only 43% of the vote.....Perot cost GHWB.....the election.......57% of the country did not vote for Clinton....I personally think to discount Obama's winning capability is a dangerous mistake.....

Oh good...Romney as President is Obama-Lite...... don't need that! Then what the Republicans and Independents NEED to do is RESEARCH the candidates, if they do that and not just take other people's word for it then Romney would be OUT for good. I have to agree that Newt does have some baggage but what he did he apologized for and that is now between him and God, not us. We need someone who can stand up to Obama and speak only the issues & Newt can do that.

Ross Perot was a dawg, even though he was a business man he was too high-strung.He was in it for one reason only, to make sure Bush did not get re-elected.

Well you make some good points... don't agree with them all...Did Americans RESEARCH Barry? This is just not the way for most voters...sad but true... candidate will be elect in 12 on his appeal and ability to convey his position on troubling issues facing America...Econ for example... Barry has no chance on this issue... On Newt...it is more that just his three wives...it is how he acted in the wife changing moments... it reveals...at least to me... he has a huge problem in judgement and respect for women... he may be a good speaker...and he has some positive ideas... but to just say his problems are between him and god....well that is just not enough for me...

Bubba Bill's problem wasn't just between him and God.... I think a strong candidate will emerge from Republican side... voters have Barry fatigue... and he is not trusted anymore... Voters will correct the 08 voting error... that is my view...

I think Bugs Bunny would have a chance against BO if Bugs connected with the people and had some good ideas for the current plethora of problems facing this country. As for those "one in five" just when are you going to become true Americans and accept that this land was established first and foremost for freedom?!! That includes religious freedom. I thought we got past this religion thing when JFK was elected...back then people feared the Pope was going to be telling any RC president how to run his show. Unless the candidate is a complete religious fanatic or wears his religion on his sleeve, citing scripture at every opportunity, religion shouldn't be the basis upon which anyone chooses or rejects a candidate. If the candidate doesn't bring his religion into the campaign it shouldn't be a campaign issue. If it still is, though, we're talking bigotry. When they do these surveys, they ought to connect which side of the political fence these "one in fives" are. I have my suspicions which side that is.
