It's going to hurt them both and this is why......

The silent majority is starting to realize that NEITHER the Republicans nor the Democrats are actually trying to solve any of the issues facing America. The Republicans want to continue the status quo until such time as THEY can regain some political power, and the Democrats are entrenched trying to siphon as much money out of the system as they can while they have the opportunity.

And when the Republicans regain power, the situation will reverse-- the Democrats will want to keep the status quo, while the Republicans loot the system.

Eating your own never results in anything good, especially when it involves kicking out more moderate members. Even if those members might not vote in lockstep with the party, they are frequently handy in procedural votes and such which can further the party's goal (cloture votes, for instance).

Which is just awesome to watch.

I hope it tears them apart and we can get a new party that embraces SOME of the same ideas, but can behave in much more constructive and collaborative ways.

I misread the question. Eyes ain't so good, got to get three feet from a TV to read it. I thought it read: I'm going to help them both by... so I gave the reason I wanted to help them stop this tear in our country.

Anyways: I'm going to help them both by... I'm a loyal American. A nation divided cannot stand. Divide and conquer, you know the rest. Makes me glad I don't live in real life.

Difficult to say. The republican party has been the home of conservatives. Personally I'd think the GOP would be better off if all the liberals that's in it would go over to the democrats. Because of the likes of the mcains and snow graham collins (well specter finally went home to the democrats.) Their votes could never be counted on most of the time. Because of those liberals and others that call themselves republicans have most conservatives bad mouthing republicans for being cowards and weak kneed.

I'm an independent who thinks this petty bickering, and antagonism has to stop. Right now, the Republicans are voting NO on everything put before them out of spite, and nothing any of them say to the contrary is going to convince me otherwise. I have heard their arguments as to why they are voting no, and it's petty Us against Them mentality.

if a Conservative/Republican split occurs, lots of candidates on both sides may lose to Dems.

I'm not saying that as a Dem -- tho I do tend that way. I'm saying it because I've seen it happen before:
back in 1980, I voted for John Andersen. I'm quite sure that that tendency among large numbers of Dems led to Reagan's victory.

The moderates (aka the silent majority) are distancing themselves from BOTH political parties; they see them BOTH as being hopelessy corrupt and self-serving.

So yes, some of the moderates are fleeing the GOP.

I think if the election were next year instead of 2012 it would definitely be hurting them, but they have three years to find someone to bring the party together. Personally I see republicans coming out the victors. I know so many republicans that can't stand Obama, but at the same time have no problem with gay marriage and at least a little understanding of women's rights. I'm betting that the conservatives will remain a very vocal minority like they are today. We'll all have to deal with them until they just become more of the white noise out there.
Then they will go the way of P.U.M.A. and we'll never hear from them again.

Their party is already getting smaller by the day. Trying to push out moderate Republicans is only going to make them smaller. It's their own fault because the keep trying to purify their party.
