Conservatives Claim Roberts Upheld Obamacare Because Of ‘Cognitive Problems’ Due To Epilepsy Medication

ProudProgressive 2012/06/29 16:22:19

This one you just have to laugh at. In the wake of Chief Justice John Roberts' surprising decision to actually put the United States Constitution and the needs of the American people ahead of partisan activism by casting the majority vote to uphold the Health Care Reform Law, the Right Wing is scrambling like rats in a spotlight to come up with some reason to continue to ignore reality. So now, in typical Right Wing fashion, they're revving up the bus and preparing to throw John Roberts under it. Even though this is the man who handed the Koch Brothers the ability to buy U.S. elections, it seems Roberts has proved that no good deed goes unpunished. And given the fact that this is coming from Michael Savage, who is probably second only to Rush Limbaugh as the most misinformed bigoted America hater around, it's all the more fun to watch.

Article excerpt follows:

Conservatives Claim Roberts Upheld Obamacare Because Of ‘Cognitive Problems’ Due To Epilepsy Medication
By Steven Perlberg
Jun 29, 2012

Chief Justice John Roberts — a George W. Bush appointee — surprised many conservatives when he wrote the majority opinion upholding Obamacare’s individual mandate, but now some conservative activists are trying to link the side effects of Roberts’ epilepsy medication to his jurisprudence.

On his radio show yesterday, right-wing host Michael Savage — who has previously called autism a “phony disease” — claimed that Roberts’ epilepsy is the root cause of his “cognitive dissociation” in the Obamacare ruling:

Let’s talk about Roberts. I’m going to tell you something that you’re not going to hear anywhere else, that you must pay attention to. It’s well known that Roberts, unfortunately for him, has suffered from epileptic seizures. Therefore he has been on medication. Therefore neurologists will tell you that medication used for seizure disorders, such as epilepsy, can introduce mental slowing, forgetfulness and other cognitive problems. And if you look at Roberts’ writings you can see the cognitive dissociation in what he is saying.

Another right-wing radio host, Bryan Fischer, echoed Savage’s sentiments in a tweet citing a 2007 New York Times piece about the Chief Justice.

Bryan Fischer @BryanJFischer NYT, '07: Roberts' epilepsy meds "troubling side effects," include "mental slowing and forgetfulness." nyti.ms/LU0dgv
28 Jun 12 ReplyRetweetFavorite

In true form, the Drudge Report also linked to Savage’s comments in the wake of the ruling.

It’s remarkable that epilepsy is somehow still stigmatized significantly more than other neurological disorders. It’s even more remarkable that Savage, Fischer, and Drudge would stoop this low.

No... Conservatives did not. One Conservative did. As usual, you people will say anything to try to make all Conservatives look bad. But... we're used to it. Seldom does the truth come out of a left winger's mouth.

He has sold himself, so has the Super Pac of business people. Yes, both the RNC and the small business are fighting Obama, so they are telling the facts.

Romney is raking the cash in while Obama is begging for Wedding Gift. The June employment data will be out soon. It will again show Marxism doesn't work!

BTW, the Obama campaign is buying products from Staples. Staples was created by Romney when he ran Bain. He was on the board of Directors for ten year.

As a tax, it only takes a simple majority in the Senate to rescind Obamacare. Roberts also gavee individual state the right not to implement the Medicaisd portion of Obamacare.

Roberts did better then a slam dunk and stayed within the constitution.

First you have to have control of the Senate. As for states rights, Governor Scott of Florida has stated he will not implement any of the NHC provisions. A state where the majority of the population is elderly and depends in some sort of way on Medicare/Medicaid. Scott may find his term as Governor a short lived career with that approach. The short of it is,the legislation as conceived now needs to be reworked. A complete repeal will mean a complete return to status quo. Republicans, Conservatives and Tea Party representitives fight amongst themselevs as much as they do with Democrats it is just not as obvious.

The only thing Obamacare did for the elderly was to steal 500 billion from their Medicare to fund Obamacare.

That is why small buisness owners represented by every business organization in America are giving money to a Super Pac to fight that Maqrxist in the White House but Harry Alford said it best.

“Harry Alford, president and CEO of the National Black Chamber of Commerce, went off on President Obama’s anti-business philosophy on Friday in an interview with Laura Ingraham.

Alford called the administration “Marxist” and “fanatical” and said, “They might as well put on the brown shirts and swastikas.”

BTW, 73 percent of small business owner also are against Obamacare. That is why they are contributing to a Super Pac to fight that Marxist in the White House and many other Liberals in the House and Senate.

    • "What do concerns about regulations and policies mean for small businesses? Stalled growth. 80% of small businesses surveyed report the taxation, regulation, and legislation from Washington make it harder for their business to hire more employees. Nearly three-out-of-four (73%) of small businesses surveyed cite the recent health care law as an obstacle to growing their business and hiring more employees.”

Do small businesses support Obama's policies?

"Sixteen percent of small businesses approve of the job President Obama is doing."

Gee whiz, I would *almost* have bet that you could READ better than this. But then again, when all one reads is Think Progress and Media Matters emails, one NEVER gets the facts!

It was in fact your Bible, the New York Times, that pointed out that Roberts suffered from epilepsy and might need to take seizure-controlling drugs, in their August 1 2007 article:

    http://www.nytimes.com/2007/0...

As talk show host Michael Savage correctly indicated, the Times was setting up for a call for impeachment if Roberts should prove to be too conservative on the bench, when they wrote this:

"But the drugs can have troubling side effects, including drowsiness or insomnia, weight loss or weight gain, rashes, irritability, mental slowing and forgetfulness. Many patients can be treated with minimal side effects, doctors say, but it may take trial and error to find the right drug."
    ...
“If he takes medication, he is likely to do fine and be seizure-free,” said Dr. Gregory L. Barkley, a neurologist who specializes in epilepsy"

Ahh, yes. "Seizure-free". But NOT free of "mental slowing and forgetfulness", as the Times so helpfully pointed out.

I don't think his disability had anything at all to do with his decision. That is hog wash and pandering to the crowd.

I know I'm a Repo but this is just like spoiled kids crying for no reason. They seemed to think Robert's bailed on them by not taking out the whole mandate option in His Majesty's HC bill by backtracking and fence sitting. In effect he told the criers to get up off of their butts and solve the problem at the ballot box. As it should be in a representative republic.

However, if taken in the right light Roberts just handed the blueprint to the Repo's on how to take back the WH if they can get it together enough to do that. Let's face it calling 0biecare a tax instead of a mandate really put a fire under a lot of voters butts. Now let's see if the Republicans can turn that to their advantage.

The blogger is only relating Michael Savage's comments about it on his radio show. I happened to catch his comments, and he was pointing out that the Times raised this as an issue so that they could later use it as a pretext for a call for impeachment if Roberts proved to be too conservative for their liking.

IOW, the liberals raised the issue of Roberts' epilepsy, not the conservatives. The "Think Progress" piece that the OP referenced is, as always, a falsehood.

He rewrote their law, that's judicial activism. He let it stand as a tax after Obama swore it wasn't a tax, they argued it was a tax and still the Obama White House claims it isn't? Actually, I'm not going to fry Roberts no matter how idiotic his decision was because I think he gave Romney a gift! The uninsured people that I know that will be affected were uninsured by choice and they're plenty pissed off! I'm even hearing Ron Paul supporters say they'll vote for Romney now. Thanks for the election time gift!
