Congressman Vern Buchanan, English Language Unity Act

Important legislation to establish English
as the official language of the United States is getting attention in
Congress.

The U.S. House Subcommittee on the Constitution held a hearing
on the bill last week featuring testimony from U.S. English Chairman Mauro
Mujica. Mr. Mujica told the panel that the English Language Unity Act,
which I have co-sponsored, would “truly unite Americans by ensuring we are all
bound by a common, shared language.” I couldn’t agree more.

Since the
birth of our nation more than 200 years ago, the English language has been a
common bond that unites all of us as Americans. Our nation has been a home for
immigrants seeking life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness, and that bond
has played an important role in our country's development. Learning English
will help open doors for legal immigrants working to build a better life in this
country.

However, the 2010 census reveals that 25 million Americans, or
8.7 percent of the population, speak English less than “very well.” That’s why
it is critical that we pass the English Language Unity Act. This bill
would require the official functions of the U.S. government to be conducted in
English and obligate an understanding of the English language prior to
naturalization.

Theodore Roosevelt once said, “we have room for but
one language, the language of George
Washington
and Abraham Lincoln, the language of the Declaration of
Independence – the English language.” I will continue to work with House
members on both sides of the aisle to ensure that the United States of America
is united behind a common language.

As always, please let me know what
you think.

Vern
You!
