Congressional Pig Book: Are Earmarks on Their Way Out?

Earmarks -- legislative provisions that members of Congress use to direct federal funds or tax breaks to pet projects -- have been sapping taxpayer money for year, but according to the Citizens Against Government Waste's "Congressional Pig Book," those loopholes are nearly vanquished. The report says earmarks are down 98.3% since 2010 (from 9,129 to 152) and the total cost is down 80% (from $16.5 billion to $3.3 billion). But it brings up a new concern.

The book writes, "While the lower number and cost of earmarks are a vast improvement over prior years, transparency and accountability have regressed immeasurably ... [Until a ban is imposed,] taxpayers will be justified in their belief that members of Congress are being creative and deceptive in skirting the moratorium and continuing to obtain earmarks." Do you think earmarks are actually on their way out, or is Congress just getting creative?

Not unless they explicitly made earmarks illegal, which I don't think is possible in a republic where representatives are supposed to pursue the interests of their state's and district's constituents. My solution would be to better publicize who Senators & Representatives are getting their campaign donations from and the amounts they are receiving from those donors. Maybe even wear their donors on their jackets the same as NASCAR drivers. The bigger the donor, the bigger the logo. Something to give the constituents a constant visible reminder of who exactly "owns" a particular Congress critter. Something to shame those Congress critters for betraying the public in favor of special interests.

yup we have more debt than any other on the planet and it sure as hell isnt a good thing and the fake fiat dollars created out of thin air have definitely reduced the value of the dollar....the dollar has lost over 90% of its value since the Fed was put in place in 1913
  • Pm JERSEYDUDE 2012/04/20 06:37:54

The total is higher but that's not telling the full story. Our debt is on par with the rest of the world in correlation with the tax revenues and GDP the other top 5 countries have.
The dollar has not lost 90% value. That is a myth. You look at a product like milk in 1913, it cost around 30cents wages were $1300 a year. Now its $4 a gallon and median income is $30k. The living standards of then compared to now are 100 times better too.

No, as long as we have a majority of Dems in the Senate and a Dem President, we are going to have earmarks. Let's pray and vote to limit these liberals in Nov. and get some sanity in our government, and reduce this wasteful spending, and eliminate as many earmarks as possible in due time. Earmarks are for buying votes, and only benefit the politician, and cost the taxpayer.

no it was not but Rome did burn in almost a day ! Its still a lot easier to destroy than to build and many would rather get rich off the dying of the light than cut spending and make it bright once again -
  • Heisenberg Franklin 2012/04/19 03:31:42
    Heisenberg
Many would also rather get rich off the blood, toil, and tears of others by enslaving them and making them do all the hard labor. Cutting spending isn't going to make the economy grow anymore. They've already tried that approach the past decade, and this was the end result.

We're broke because of the war (which I fought myself) Dumbass. War is expensive. We're also broke because of all the tax cuts on the rich. I'm happy as hell that I'm no longer in the military. What I think they should do is cut the defense budget by 50%. As far as Greece is concerned, they're in that position because they cut taxes. Our economy is recovering and has been for the past 3 years. Unemployment is lower than it's been in two years in fact. There's actually a surplus in social security. The tax cuts continued under Bush and were inherited by Obama.

"They've already tried that approach the past decade, and this was the end result."

Nonsense. Government spending has never been cut. It has always relentlessly increased. The only thing that has ever been cut is the RATE of growth of government spending.
  • Heisenberg Dan™: R... 2012/04/19 17:35:52
    Heisenberg
Oh really? Then tell me why they've cut funding on infrastructure and other services. You conservatives think the first thing we should do is always cut services that benefit the working class and poor but never make the rich pitch in when the economy is in a debacle. The OWS movement needs to gain more momentum because the Tea Baggers are running out of places to hide.

"Then tell me why they've cut funding on infrastructure and other services."

Uh, obviously because we don't have the money to do it. When you don't have enough money to pay your bills, do you decide to start an expensive remodeling project on your house?

And those "services" you say benefit the working class and poor are paid for ENTIRELY by the "rich." People making over $200,000 per year pay 95% of all taxes. That's a fact. So take that OWS crap and cram it up your crack.

The treasury can always print money. Every since 1971 the government funds itself. Taxes are merely paid to combat deflation. Keep the value of the dollar in check.
And yes people making over 200k do pay 95% of all taxes, while the OWS pay nothing.

The entitlements killed them. Tehy should of thought ahead a bit and realized they do not produce enough revenue in taxes and as GDP to sustain the entitlements But the real issue is, Greece cant create or "print" money on their own. They have to borrow it from the issuer (euro). They are the user.

I certainly hope so. In another country it would be called baksheesh. Our representatives are in Washington to do a job for the people. All of the people! There has to be a more equatable way to do it. Create jobs. etc. We have to stop the current conservative trend to privitizing the commons and selling off the commons.

no they are there to do the job of their constituents. my representative is to do focus on his district and the senators are to focus on the state they are from. when they vote they are to make sure their vote does not hurt us. they are to vote to make our lives better. that is why they are elected to begin with.

I'm sure you think that was a pithy statement, but it's a completely nonsensical statement.
