Seems to me that the kid has a viable argument. The MSM tends to get very excited over Church and State issues, and this definitely seems to apply to that category. What say you?

A Colorado high school student says he quit the school choir after an Islamic song containing the lyric "there is no truth except Allah" made it into the repertoire.

James Harper, a senior at Grand Junction High School in Grand Junction, put his objection to singing "Zikr," a song written by Indian composer A.R. Rahman, in an email to Mesa County School District 51 officials. When the school stood by choir director Marcia Wieland's selection, Harper said, he quit.

"I don’t want to come across as a bigot or a racist, but I really don’t feel it is appropriate for students in a public high school to be singing an Islamic worship song,” Harper told KREX-TV. "This is worshipping another God, and even worshipping another prophet ... I think there would be a lot of outrage if we made a Muslim choir say Jesus Christ is the only truth."

So it begins. This Man stood up for what he believed. We might all have to do this at one point.

Draw a line in the sand. And never compromise your faith for any reason. I would have done the same thing and support this student 100% . Good for him.

if the line were "There is no truth other than god" how many people would have a problem with it? too many but switch it to "allah" and we're supposed to be tolerant

Same reason I didn't participate in the Xmas show at school. all Xmas songs sing about baby Jesus..

Be careful what you wish for with prayer in school. You will have to except all religions not just the one you like...

It didn't seem that the young man had a problem with the Christian songs, so in his mind it wasn't an issue of church in state it was an issue of faith. No one can force him to sing a song he believes goes against his religious beliefs, so it's his right, (enjoy them while you can) to remove himself from the choir. Fair play to him...not many young children are brave enough to publicly stand up for what they believe in.

However kids are required across the US every day to say "under god" in the pledge of allegiance every day?

Many schools don't even do the Pledge anymore and in those that do, I believe the under God part is optional. I don't know that for a fact, though. Just things I have heard.

Of course they don't outright say that you aren't required to, but being a 5th grade kid and not understanding that it's unnecessary to add it doesn't make it any different. All i know is when I was in 5th grade, my teacher would get mad if i skipped any part of the pledge. And yes, even now they require kids to say the pledge of allegiance in the schools around where I live.

Back in high school, I never said the pledge, during my junior and senior years.
I didn't say it because I wasn't going to pledge to this government that I was very angry at at the time.
A few of my teachers became angry with me for not saying it, but legally then couldn't make me. C:

He has the right to choose not to participate in choir, the funny thing is if this had been over a Christian song, and ONE student was offended then they would have pulled the Christian song with no questions asked, oh never mind, it wouldn't have been allowed in the first place...

He should do as he pleases.

He just sounds like a wienie attention whore like so many are today. If the line bothered him or others they could have just spoken with the leader about not singing that phrase...or opt out of the song completely.

Nah...first thing this kid does is call a radio station. I am sick of people waiting to be offended so they can be on TV.

I can respect both sides of the argument. When you join a performing group, you have to realize that the music you may be performing may not necessarily fit your beliefs. There were various times in high school where things like this happened. If the student didn't agree with what the song said the teacher didn't make them perform that song.

I can respect the student's decision to not be apart of it though. In the end if the song is against his beliefs system he is well within is right to file a complaint and then leave the group if things don't change.

I'm disappointed in those who did NOT quit the choir over the singing of praise to allah. I'm surprised too that the school condones mixing church and state..or does the "separation of Church and state" only apply to CHRISTIAN religions and songs? Surely that can't be the case?

Maybe so but his quitting will accomplish very little, the better thing for him to have done was talk to the other members and get everyone who agreed with him to stand up with him and refuse to sing the song. That would have forced the schools hand where as now he is just one kid that quit choir and nothing changes.

Eminently reasonable. Religious hymns should be reserved for church, not high schools, especially one of another religion / political system.
