COLLECTIVISM vs INDIVIDUALISM; Definitions and Quotes

Collectivism n.
A political or economic theory advocating collective control especially over production and distribution ; emphasis on collective rather than individual action or identity. Any of several types of social organization in which the individual is seen as being subordinate to a social collectivity such as a state, a nation, a race, or a social class.

Individualism is the moral stance, political philosophy, or social outlook that stresses independence and self-reliance. Individualists promote the exercise of one's goals and desires, while opposing most external interference with one's choices, whether by society, the state, or any other group or institution. Individualism is opposed to collectivism or statism, which stress that communal, community, group, societal, or national goals should take priority over individual goals.

    I'll go with individualism as this is what built this country in the first place.

    From what I've seen on the streets of American, we are already here. This is why people are complacent: they know that their input, whether by vote, dissent (get thrown in jail), petition, or protest, has no effect whatever any more. They're already controlled from the top and feel helpless. A little individual revolt would cure this problem.

    Reading all of this and then hearing the democrats pushing for socialism, why would anyone want that? Why would you want to lose your individuality? Once you lose that, you are just part of the mass, lost in the crowd, your voice never to be heard from again. It's beyond me!

    This year has brought to light, for me, a lot of quietly held beliefs and added strength and force, and words, to them. I never named myself an Individualist but merely as an American. Until this year I thought that was enough... now I see the distinction. Individualism IS American... this great experiment in democracy, founded on the individual's right to a government of the people. I hope in my heart that most American also see the tragedy and danger in ending that 'experiment' and rewriting the foundation of this nation.

    As usual and quite often as the Madhatter has shown us, opposing views are structured not on the historical facts and tendencies, but non sense, not even remotely connected to the post that they are responding to. Rave's response was rather tame as there are many progressives that carry around, "Rules for Radicals", as their source for rancor and pseudo change, and do not have the slightest idea from where this ideology stems from. Need a history lesson on your ideology, read about the French Revolution and the Sans-Culottes, read Kant and Hegel, Mills, Ricardo,Marx,Engles,DeLeon, Mussolini, Lenin, Stalin, Hitler and the rest of the hit parade. There are plenty of historical dream weaving as a reference points to begin from. We as Americans have for the most part kept ourselves intact as individuals, with our liberty and freedoms that we all enjoy each and every day, while most of mankind still remains under tyranny. Lest we not forget the struggle that got us here, and always beware of ignorance and want...

    One of quotes above really hit home with the current environment of 'crisis'... "Every collectivist revolution rides in on a Trojan horse of 'emergency'. It was the tactic of Lenin, Hitler, and Mussolini. [..]" . I was surprised it came from Republican Hoover though with his failed policies that are *very* similar to what the Democrats are offering now.

    I would love take credit but it's the words of many before us that we have to look to... a history of failed societies to learn from. I often have ideas and thoughts and find others have been there before me and found better words than I ever could.

    It's reassuring to look to the future and dream of a perfect society but not looking to the past, where men and societies have failed, is dangerous.

    I just came upon this blog and I'm a little late to the game, but it occurs to me that many of you are missing a key point. It's not republican or democrat - it's both. That's the collective. To believe one of the major parties is absent is absurd.

    Sorry, but you've missed the point. It's about neither party; it's not partisan. To believe that is narrow thinking. The blog post was about collectivism vs individualism; neither party was mentioned. Nor did Art, whom you are replying to, mention party. You need to get past partisanship to see a bigger picture.

    It's about the threatening, and very possible, loss of individuality and the companion losses of self-determination and personal accountability if we continue down a path of bigger, more intrusive and more controlling government. I don't know about you but, personally, I don't want to go there and prefer that this 'experiment' called America remain many self-reliant individuals working together rather than a government directing each and every life in it.
