Anyone in advertising knows that sometimes shock tactics are the best way to get your message across. But there is always a fine line between being effective and going over-the-top. The newest subject of this timeless debate: a Milwaukee ad campaign against sharing beds with infants.
The controversial posters, designed by SERVE Marketing and unveiled by city officials, show a baby sleeping in a bed with a butcher knife. The message is clear even without the text that says, “Your baby sleeping with you can be just as dangerous.”

The posters, just like the practice itself, have been met with mixed reactions. Many, including the American Academy of Pediatrics, believe that the practice of sharing a bed with an infant is dangerous and should be avoided. As such, theses individuals argue that no shock is too great if it will save even one baby from being crushed or suffocated while sharing a bed.
“Is it shocking? Is it provocative? Yes. But what is even more shocking and provocative is that 30 developed and underdeveloped countries have better [infant death] rates than Milwaukee,” said Milwaukee commissioner of health Bevan Baker.
Others, however, believe that co-sleeping is the most natural way to feed a baby and argue that it has been practiced for millennia. They feel that it is outrageous to compare a mother to a butcher knife and that Milwaukee government officials should focus instead on teaching parents how to safely practice bed-sharing.

Deliciously Melicious 2011/11/28 01:22:44Over-the-top+15Many people in many countries co-sleep with their babies. Even in America not too many years ago. I co-slept with my eldest, in fact, while in the hospital, the nurses put him into bed with me, because moving was so painful after a c-section. He's now 9 almost 10. He's happy and healthy and intelligent.

Sleeping with a baby is a good thing when it's must nursing mother and infant. If a woman is obese and moves around in her sleep, that might be a problem. But under usual conditions, I'm for it.
This is almost more of a waste of money when PETA campained against Mario.
breastfeeding reduces infant death by huge percentages (numbers vary based on whether you are comparing "solely" ; "mostly" ; "occasional" etc. so would it be fair to compare bottle feeding to playing russian roulette?
Either way letting your baby sleep with you is nothing near the precise lines of letting your baby sleep with a knife. Totally different scenarios. I understand the point, but the 'shock tactics' in this add are just an utmost failure at it's greatest. When using shock tactics, you should always first check that they at least have a thing in common, which in this case, does not.
Though the point was of shock value, as should be obvious even if it was a failure, due to it being clearly stated in the article.
And people wonder why we can't get anything done in this country. We're more concerned with punishing people over anything we can than with making a better society where we can all thrive. You're not taxed enough, even though you pay more than the rest of the country, so we want to raise your taxes. Your child just died due to a freak accident overnight, let's charge you with something and put you in jail. Our society is degrading quickly, and I think it is the us vs them mentality that is at fault. No one in power wants to look at what is best for the country, but what is best for them. Washington wants to talk about corporate greed ruining our country, but it's political greed doing it.
My post make as much sense as this stupid advertisment...!
