Co-Sleeping With Butcher Knives: Are These Milwaukee PSAs Effective or Over-the-Top?

Anyone in advertising knows that sometimes shock tactics are the best way to get your message across. But there is always a fine line between being effective and going over-the-top. The newest subject of this timeless debate: a Milwaukee ad campaign against sharing beds with infants.

The controversial posters, designed by SERVE Marketing and unveiled by city officials, show a baby sleeping in a bed with a butcher knife. The message is clear even without the text that says, “Your baby sleeping with you can be just as dangerous.”

cosleeping

The posters, just like the practice itself, have been met with mixed reactions. Many, including the American Academy of Pediatrics, believe that the practice of sharing a bed with an infant is dangerous and should be avoided. As such, theses individuals argue that no shock is too great if it will save even one baby from being crushed or suffocated while sharing a bed.

“Is it shocking? Is it provocative? Yes. But what is even more shocking and provocative is that 30 developed and underdeveloped countries have better [infant death] rates than Milwaukee,” said Milwaukee commissioner of health Bevan Baker.

Others, however, believe that co-sleeping is the most natural way to feed a baby and argue that it has been practiced for millennia. They feel that it is outrageous to compare a mother to a butcher knife and that Milwaukee government officials should focus instead on teaching parents how to safely practice bed-sharing.

What do you think about the Milwaukee PSAs? Are they effective or over-the-top?

Many people in many countries co-sleep with their babies. Even in America not too many years ago. I co-slept with my eldest, in fact, while in the hospital, the nurses put him into bed with me, because moving was so painful after a c-section. He's now 9 almost 10. He's happy and healthy and intelligent.

I wouldn't let a baby sleep with me, but only because in my dreams I strangle things. Other people do not do that.

The one who created this ad should be fired. They have absolutely no understanding of babies and their parents.

Ridiculous! I didn't even get the point just looking at the pictures - no pun intended.

Sleeping with a baby is a good thing when it's must nursing mother and infant. If a woman is obese and moves around in her sleep, that might be a problem. But under usual conditions, I'm for it.

Milwaukee, wake up and smell the Starbucks!!!!!!!! There are more important child and family issues to worry about than shared beds. Food, shelter, medicine, and employment are bigger worries for American families. Much bigger! Community leaders are molesting children and getting away with it for decades. There's something to get riled up about.

OH COME ON!!!!! More children, thousands a day worldwide, are dying from starvation, poverty, dirty water, diseases, obeasity, and war! I have shared a bed with my parents when I was an infant, so did my brother! No big deal, not a big issue.

This is almost more of a waste of money when PETA campained against Mario.

WAY over. co-sleeping is not inherently dangerous - doing it "wrong" is

breastfeeding reduces infant death by huge percentages (numbers vary based on whether you are comparing "solely" ; "mostly" ; "occasional" etc. so would it be fair to compare bottle feeding to playing russian roulette?

I understand that they worry about an infant could be accidently killed by sleeping with parents, but I haven't heard of many or any that this has happened to. I know its possible, but instead of doing such a ridiculous ad, they really need to teach parents certain tactics so it won't happen.

Sleeping with your baby is not dangerous unless you have rolling over problems which in any case is rare.
Either way letting your baby sleep with you is nothing near the precise lines of letting your baby sleep with a knife. Totally different scenarios. I understand the point, but the 'shock tactics' in this add are just an utmost failure at it's greatest. When using shock tactics, you should always first check that they at least have a thing in common, which in this case, does not.

Seeing as the practice of bed-sharing is not uncommon in parts of the country which do not share the same infant mortality rate, I hesitate to say they even have the right culprit... As it is I find it suspicious that a particular city has these problems more intensely than others. Makes me wonder if the problem is not something more sinister than sharing a bed.

Why are they putting knives next to sleeping babies in the picture if they say it is unsafe? I think that that is child abuse. But I do agree that parents should not co-sleep with babies.

    I'm sure it's photoshopped.

Though the point was of shock value, as should be obvious even if it was a failure, due to it being clearly stated in the article.

I've known many families where the babies slept with the parents until they were a year or two old. None of the kids died. We didn't do that with our two, but they slept with one of us when they were sick or scared. My two always liked having their own beds.

There are many people in the world cannot read English or speak English, and most of these people have the common sense not to have babies sleep with knives. You really need to be more careful before you make a statement like that.

For how many centuries have parents co-slept with their babies? It has always happened and it always will. When something tragic happens to a baby as a result of co-sleeping, do you not think that the parents are already going to be punished/troubled enough, having lost a child, that you need to make them feel worse. These PSAs are airing where I live, and I've heard a lot of the stories on the news, where they want to bring charges against the parent who put their baby in bed with them. It's not enough that someone just lost a child, but now you want to have them arrested, and charged with a crime? The crime being "comforting their child"? Caring for it? Loving it?

And people wonder why we can't get anything done in this country. We're more concerned with punishing people over anything we can than with making a better society where we can all thrive. You're not taxed enough, even though you pay more than the rest of the country, so we want to raise your taxes. Your child just died due to a freak accident overnight, let's charge you with something and put you in jail. Our society is degrading quickly, and I think it is the us vs them mentality that is at fault. No one in power wants to look at what is best for the country, but what is best for them. Washington wants to talk about corporate greed ruining our country, but it's political greed doing it.
