A new phenomenon is sliding it's way into some churches across the United States, and it's not exactly that coherent with the peaceful teachings of Christianity.

It's called mixed martial arts, and some churches are using it to attract new converts. Xtreme Ministries, a church in Nashville that moonlights as a martial arts academy, was founded by John Renken. The school's motto?

“Where Feet, Fist and Faith Collide.”

Recruitment entails inviting others to the church to watch MMA matches and discuss how Christ "fought" for what he believed in. Oddly enough, I don't remember Jesus taking a right hook to someone, but I could be wrong. The pastors of this movement hope that this re-imaging of Jesus could help bring in more converts and bring a little machismo to the faith.

But do you approve of using Mixed Martial Arts in the church? Would Jesus (who generally spoke of peace) approve of such a promotion?

Jesus would say, "sure, be that, that you are.. but fighting each other will teach you a new lesson, learned only AFTER the damage is done and when it is too late to change things"
    ... I'm not a religious person either ? weird..

While I think it's perfectly fine to know and practice martial arts (against enemies!) the idea of recruiting because of fights? I don't think so. Christ taught peace, serenity, love; those were and still should be the basis of the Christian faith. Now, of course Christ could take care of himself. He took out those money-changers in the temple pretty easy with a whip! And I'm certain that if someone is in danger, Christ would be just fine with that person protecting himself. In my opinion, these churches are out on a pretty long limb.

How do plan on reaching those who believe in fighting? who feel that they are lost and that people are throwing jesus their way. how do you plan on showing them that Jesus loves them. some of these men and women believe they are not loved and all they can do is fight. they feel they are nothing. how do u plan on reaching them. some will only listen to those who are like them. so how will u get across and show understanding.

There are always other ways to reach people. If someone is so hardened that they can't feel anything beyond a punch, they need some serious help that would need a lot more discussion than what we can post on here.
If they truly feel like "they are nothing" then fighting is not a way to reach them. To let them know that Christ loves them, individually, that he cares about them...to me, that would be a much better way to "reach" them.

How many fighters are you reaching? how many people who feel completely dead inside and feel like they are being judge and nobody understands them have You reached. everyone is different. God died on the cross to save All of us not just the ones who have it together. to judge a person who likes to get in the ring and fight that's all them. It doesn't make them a bad person. It has nothing to do with anger for most people. It is for the sport of it. But to get into a ring with a person and show they are no different then a christian and reaching to the lost is the best way to show God's love and grace. when you realized fighting in the ring or cage is different then fighting out of anger somewhere else you will understand. until then don't judge. Do you realize Jesus DIED for you and me. He didnt have to do that but he loves us and he is all perfect no us. If he is willing to do that and go that far why should we???

Excuse me? How many fighters am I reaching? I would ask you the same question.
If we are talking about the same Jesus, his message was one of peace and serenity. You tell me not to judge, but you have already judged me. Whether there is anger or not, hurting one another is NOT what Christ would want his children to do. There are soldiers who don't feel anger for their enemy. They kill because it's their job, not necessarily because they want to. And yet I doubt you'd say that to reach them, we should join them in killing others. Anger is not the issue. It is the physical and/or emotional pain that is being issued. God would not want that and neither should anyone else.
And you don't need to preach to me that Christ died on the cross to save us all. I know that. But it is OUR choice whether to accept that saving grace or not.

Jesus was no punk, and amazingly he would have made a great Buddist. Jesus was a faith warrior. Sometimes the faithful have to protect themselves physically just like anyone else. It is abuse of authority and/or power that causes problems. It ain't easy being human, just ask Jesus. The only question that really matters will have many, many answers. Will these MMA faith warriors KEEP that faith and use their power for GOOD?
