Children of a stupid god ( Pat Condell Video )

Some Q & A from his site:
Q: Why do you hate faith?
A: Why do you hate reality?

Q: What do you think of Buddhists/Hindus/Sikhs/Jedi etc.?
A: I have no problem with any of them, as last time I checked they weren't trying to take over the world.

Q: Do you use a teleprompter or read from a script?
A: No. I know what I’m going to say. I don’t need to read it.

Q: Why don’t you answer comments to your videos?
A: I get an avalanche of e-mails every day and I reply to as many of those as I can. If I started replying to comments as well I’d have no time for anything else.

Q: You don’t know what it means to have faith.
A: I don’t know what it means to you, and I don’t want to know. That’s kind of the point.

Q: You don’t understand Christianity/Islam.
A: I don’t understand smallpox or typhoid either, and I’m equally disinclined to get acquainted with them.

Q: Why shouldn’t I be allowed to raise my kids religious if I want to?
A: The same reason you shouldn’t be allowed to beat them with a knotted rope.

Q: By antagonising religious people, aren’t you making it less likely they’ll agree with you?
A: I don’t want them to agree with me. I want them to shut up and maybe see a doctor.

Q: How do you respond to atheists who say you're too crude and simplistic?
A: They're probably right, as usual.

Q: Are you academically qualified?
A: No. I left school at sixteen. My first job was washing dishes in the revolving restaurant on top of the Post Office tower in London for five shillings an hour.

Q: Do you support the BNP?
A: No. I don't support any political party, especially not one of the far right.

Q: How do you vote in elections?
A: I usually vote for the fattest candidate, on the basis that they'll take up more room on the House of Commons benches, thereby giving me more democracy for my valuable franchise.

Q: Why do you attack Christianity when Islam is a bigger threat?
A: Because our indulgence of Christianity has encouraged Islam to claim equal status and threaten our freedom.

Q: I live in the American Bible Belt, and I’m afraid of social repercussions if I tell people I’m an atheist.
A: Well, I guess you’ll have to spend the rest of your life living a lie. Good luck with that.

Q: No, seriously. People would treat me like some kind of leper.
A: Take it as a compliment.

Q: My friends would disown me.
A: What friends?

Q: My family business would suffer.
A: OK, you win.

Q: I’d lose my job.
A: All right, we get it.

Q: Which books would you recommend?
A: All my favourite books are listed here.

Q: Can I book you as a guest on my radio/TV show?
A: No thanks. I’ve got better things to do than explain myself over and over again.

Q: Prove God doesn’t exist.
A: That’s a tough one. Show me how it’s done by proving Zeus and Apollo don’t exist, and I’ll use your method.
You!

Not only he is smart and sharp, but he has the guts to say it like it is....very few people do this anymore because its not "politically correct" these days. May the truth be told loud and clear!

I really like this Pat. I agree with his views. Its a pity that most people cannot question their faith and/or dont have the courage to speak out when they do, for fear of being ostracized. I have been very open with my atheist views for some time now, and find it harder to put up with the religious fanatics around me.I still have many good religious friends but not fanatics. Its such a joy to find kindred spirits!
One thing that always bothered me, is why we put the human race up on such a high pedestal, but we treat other life forms such as animals as comodities to be exploited . The bible is much to blame for this for saying god made all other creatures for the pure use and convenience of mankind.I cn tell you that many homans are not worth much at all and many animals have a kinder spirit than many humans so ...we should not be looking and acting as though we own the world , but that we share it with other living creatures and we are all part of nature.
Abortion is murder? I dont see it this way at all. Its a form of birth control thats all. But life is so "holy", it becomes murder to interrupt a fertilized egg, but its not murder to kill billlions of animals in a cruel way(animal factories) just for our consumption or enjoyment (hunting for ex). aereal killing of wolv...

What are your views on this Pat?

Thinking all of humanity is stupid is so cliche. Its fashionable to look at the worst in people. People are people, people are scared, desperate creatures trying to find a bit of goodness in a dangerous world. Along comes religion. Religion is a tool to understanding, it's stories we tell to make sense of it all. In that way, religion is like science, there usually lies, but they enlighten us to a degree, and it's an initial stepping stone to better understanding. Plus, for many purposes, the lies work for our purposes. But trying to establish a utilitarian utopia in an uncaring world is dangerous business, and we don't always succeed. And I'm not going to be critical of religion for having problems bringing perfect order into cold chaos. Because religion is trying to find its place in the world, and it does good things. Sure its depressing too watch, and its depressing to see the evil in the world. And yes, in 2000 years, we have fought and killed each other because other people had a belief system that we deemed destructive to society. In the millions of years before that, we killed each other because we could get away with it, and we wanted that low hanging apple. So religion, in all of its flaws, is a part of humanities slow ascension (Or rather, in a cosmic sense, incredibly rapid ascent). It just needs to evolve as we evolve.

you bring up a good point. Religion needs to follow the evolution of man if its to remain significant to its followers. it cannot be of any relevance or use if its so outdated not to accept gays, abortion, birth control, evolution, rights for women, etc.
Most religions really suck when it comes to these issues!

True, religion is outdated in many...okay, many, many, many, many ways. But it also provided a sense of tribal cohesion, and mutual community that was essential to the formation of civilization. The main problem is that we need to redefine, "Community" to include a broader scope. With that, religion could evolve to be a force of good in today's society. Arguably, fundamentalism would ruin this, and keep us rooted in the past: However, i think in there hearts everyone knows that any religion provides tools and stories to aid our understanding, and there's far too many contradictions to follow it word for word. So in the end, with a real sense of community, people would believe in religion in a pro-social way.

Yes, my family went to church regularly because it was a nice social event, we met friends, we sang in the choir, we had dinners, we helped the poor and needy, we liked most people and the sense of community. I understand that. But then comes the political sides, and the fanatics and the intolerance, which destroys all the good feelings and intentions. Actually in our church, we were very tolerant, and we never mentioned or discussed gays or abortion...it was a personal thing, and everybody e respected this. Not many Churches are not that way anymore...unfortunately. But I understand what you are trying to say, Adam.

I'm afraid I'm one of the people that believes more in G*d the more I learn about the Universe. But this guy is right, the Bible is not word for word true but the writings of semitic herders from thousands of years ago. It is a history of their SEARCH for G*d.

Which puts me in opposition to this guy AND lots of christians.

Plus being basically a pacifist and I am hugely unpopular!
