Chief Justice John Roberts was set to join his conservative colleagues and vote to strike down President Obama’s health care reform law, but then changed his mind, according to a CBS News report.
Roberts initially believed the individual mandate to buy health care was unconstitutional and even planned to write the opinion voicing that view himself, sources told CBS News.
He then reversed his thinking and sided with the liberal justices of the U.S. Supreme Court, sources told CBS News. It’s not clear why he changed his mind.
Justice Anthony Kennedy tried to get Roberts back on course to strike the mandate down.
“He was relentless,” a source told CBS of Kennedy’s efforts.
