Mitt Romney's Olympics Bailed Out by Tax Payers

Check Out The Article Below Mittens Is About To Get Busted Exaggerating His Leadership Qualities AGAIN
We've seen the Obama campaign going after Mitt Romney for his time at
Bain Capital. I think with the Olympics approaching we're about to hear
more about this story from them very soon. From Up With Chris Hayes:
Mitt Romney and federal money for the Olympics:

Up host Chris Hayes and his guests talk to former Salt
Lake City Mayor Rocky Anderson about the federal assistance Mitt Romney
sought as head of the 2002 Salt Lake City Olympics.

I clipped the interview down to the portions with Anderson. You can
watch the entire segment at the link above. Here's more from the Daily
KOS on Romney's time running the Olympic games: Romney's Olympics:

Much has been made recently about Mitt Romney's
involvement with Bain while he was heading the Salt Lake Olympics
Organizing Committee, but what about his actual involvement with the
Olympics themselves? Romney has made his "turnaround" of the Olympics
that had been tainted by an international bribery scandal
a point of his campaign. He regards it as proof of his amazing
leadership ability and patriotism. So, how did Romney bail out the
Olympics. Well, he didn't. We did.

A September 2000 report from the United States General Accounting Office
tells us that tax payers paid nearly $1.3 billion for the 2002 Salt
Lake City Olympics. The majority of that, 80% of that, in fact, $1
billion of that, was spent not on the game themselves, but on
infrastructure upgrades. With 51% going to improving highways and 28% to
improve mass transit. [...]

To put that into perspective, we, the taxpayers, spent roughly $75
million on the Los Angeles Olympics and $609 million on the Atlanta
Olympics.

This prompted Senator John McCain to call the Salt Lake game a "pork-barrel" project.

“I think it is a disgrace,” said Sen. John McCain,
R-Ariz., who, along with U.S. Rep. John Dingell, D-Mich., asked the
government agency to investigate the escalating expenditures for
hosting the Olympic games in American cities.“But this is a logical
extension of what you get when you start pork-barrel spending.”

So, here is the question. Did any of that $1.3 billion of taxpayer's money go to benefit Romney or Bain? Read on...

As they noted, there are more questions which might be answered by
Mitt Romney releasing his tax returns, which it seems more obvious day
by day that he is never going to release. Romney seems to love that
government "free stuff" when it benefits himself and his business
buddies, but not so much for the working class and the poor.

President Obama has repeatedly and falsely claimed that “right now, we’re scheduled to spend nearly $1 trillion more” in tax cuts for the “wealthiest 2 percent of Americans.” That’s simply not true. The Bush tax cuts — which Obama and Congress extended for two years — expire at the end of this year, so any plans to “spend” beyond Dec. 31, 2012, would require Congress to act again.

The White House told us that the president is referring to the $968 billion that “we save” over 10 years by allowing the Bush tax cuts to expire as scheduled for high-income wage earners and returning the estate tax rate to 2009 levels. But that’s money “saved” compared with extending the expiring cuts, not compared with current law. The fact is that the U.S. is not “scheduled to spend” that money and can’t spend it without changes to current law.

On the day he released his fiscal year 2013 budget, Obama visited Northern Virginia Community College in Annandale, Va., to discuss his budget proposals. He talked about “shared responsibility” — referring to his belief that the Bush tax cuts should be allowed to expire, as planned, at the end of 2012 for the families making more than $250,000 a year and individuals earning more than $200,000.

Obama, Feb. 13: Right now, we’re scheduled to spend nearly $1 trillion more on what was intended to be a temporary tax cut for the wealthiest 2 percent of Americans. We’ve already spent about that much. Now we’re scheduled to spend another trillion.

This has become a standard line in the president’s stump speech as he begins to campaign for reelection in earnest. He made a similar statement in his Jan. 24 State of the Union address and again and again in a string of follow-up speeches in Arizona, Michigan and Iowa.

I'm not actually undecided, I'm convinced that this thread is an abhorrent slur on Mitt Romney. The GAO report is not a criticism of how Romney ran the SLC Olympics, it's a criticism of the lack of accountability of federal involvement in support of the Olympics generally as of CY 2000. The only item we are directed to in the thread intro that raises a flag about Romney is reference to a report by Daily Kos in April that charges there was an "exclusive award" - which I assume means a no-bid contract award - to a leading Romney supporter who was implicated in the bidding scandals that had prompted a call for new management at SLOC, a call that resulted in Romney's appointment. Incidentally, "infrastructure improvements", which the thread intro seems to me to try to make sound like some type of vaguely criminal enterprise, are described in Page 6 of the GAO Report as mostly consisting of funding that would have gone to the State and local government entities that received them, anyway; they are capital improvements, such as roadways and bridges, which were probably going to be built at some time or another but were often speeded up so as to be able to help in operation of the Games

Do your homework and think for a change:

That beautiful Arab spring Obama and Hillary supported turned out well. NOT.

Factcheck.org checked numerous corporate filings with the Securities and Exchange
Commission, contemporary news accounts, company histories and press releases, and the
evidence offered by both the Obama and Romney campaigns, we found no evidence to support the claim that Romney — while he was still running Bain Capital — shipped American jobs overseas.

At this point, I don't care if he's lied multiple times and has 100 offshore accounts. He's still better than the a$$wipe we have in office right now (who has lied thousands of times, assisted in the death of Brian Terry and 200+ Mexican nationals, surrounded himself with corrupt cronies, thrown away billions of tax dollars and probably has 1000 offshore accounts).

Girl, since 2007, I'm sure it was, the first time I heard the name Barack Obama. I knew that it was NOT an American name. This man is from some other country with a name like Obama (cousin, Odinga dictator of, I FORGOT THE NAME!!!!!!!)

Anyway, the garbage started to float, anyone could see some handwriting on the walls of Chicago. Obama didn't fit the neighborhood. He's never fitted. Except for a 'radical experiment'. Consider: That 'community organizing' deception, goals not achieved, appropiations not recepted for and it goes deeper and deeper.

A move to direct the community to Vote In or Out whoever fit THEIIR agendas. Islam must be represented in the political home, of its son Barack H. Obama, President of the United States, who brought about the biggest political change in the USA ever in the history of the country.
