CBO: Electric Cars Are A Waste Of Money

Quietman ~PWCM~JLA 2012/09/24 16:44:24
The Congressional Budget Office (CBO) did a good job of shredding the electric car industry and the government’s role in its evolution with this report (Link).

I’m not knocking electric cars, I’m knocking DC’s role in this industry. Washington has provided the loot necessary for research on battery design, it has committed to up to $25Bn of soft loans to the auto industry and it is subsidizing every electric car that is sold. Without the massive support from our “rich” Uncle Sam there would be no electric car industry in the USA. The question is, “Is this money well spent?”

If there were a market for them, they'd be flying off the car lots.

There isn't, at least until gas is $10 per gallon.

But then there are the electricity rates that "under my plan will necessarily skyrocket!" according to Obama.

Either way, we're f*cked as Americans.

I don't think GM would have put the Volt on the market without influence of government. Even with subsidy it's too expensive.

Agreed. If electric cars had a future, they would have had some staying power on their own.

The real problem w/ the electric car is that the batterries can't hold a charge long enough to go anywhere. Plus in 5 yrs or less when the battery goes kaput where will you dispose of it and what will it cost to replace it?. Eletric cars aren't new they were around at the turn of of twentieth century but they didn't catch on for the same reason they haven't caught on now. cost too much & they're ineffecient.

Right now the cost to replace the battery pack is between $5000 - $8000 depending on the report you read.

That's just the cost of the battery, then you add the cost of hiring the tchnician to install the replacement because you know they wont set it up so the avg Joe can do it.

I know. Either you can't get to it (design intent) or it's something electronic that most people don't have tools for.

Eactly! Like my 97 GMC truck after it warms up the anti lock brake light comes on and it won't shift on it's own, I have to manually shift it from first up to overdrive. To take it to the sgop to have it diagnosed costs 50 bucks that I don't have. I'm ready to trade it off for an old Chevy like my 63 it only had a 235 six banger in it w/ a 4 speed tranny but you could at least work on it.

That's one more proof that 0bama had no business getting involved in the making of the VOLT which extremely costly and a failure altogether.

Actually Volt is a good system, it's just too expensive.

Still a failure, that's my point.

No, the system itself isn't a failure, bringing it to market before it's ready is where failure happens, and that's what Obama's "car czar" did.

The car will be no longer be built which makes it a failure, don't be so stubborn.
  • TheTailor GUAPO~L... 2012/09/26 00:05:36 (edited)
    TheTailor
I'm not being stubborn and the Volt is being produced by special order only, production hasn't been stopped, MASS production has been stopped, by the order of the GM board after it regained control.

Edit: The Volt is a good system, but it wasn't ready for market. The "car czar" rushed it to market, that is the only problem with Volt.
