Canaries: Democrats In Coal Country Run Away From Obama's 'War on Coal'

Evil 1 2012/06/20 17:19:08

Yesterday, prominent Democrats in West Virginia -- Gov. Earl Ray Tomblin, Sen. Joe Manchin and Rep. Nick Rahall -- announced they would not be attending the Democratic National Convention in North Carolina. And a spokesman for another Democrat, Rep. Mark Critz (D-PA), someone Republicans feel they can defeat in 2012, confirmed to Roll Call that Critz would not be attending the convention as well.

Many Democrats at the state level have run away from Obama’s unpopular economic policies and presidency, but Democrats from coal country have even more incentive to do so because Obama’s administration has waged a war on coal since Obama’s first days in office. In 2010, Manchin ran a famous ad in his Senate race against Obama’s Cap and Trade bill in which he literally took aim and fired at the bill.

According to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), 98 percent of West Virginia’s power is generated by coal. In Pennsylvania, that number is 55 percent, but it is greater in Critz’s newly-drawn 12th District, in the heart of Pennsylvania’s southwestern coal country.

In fact, after Obama’s economic speech in Cleveland, Critz, a Democrat, lit into Obama, issuing a statement that said “President Obama and others in Washington need to realize that we cannot spend our way to prosperity” and must “enact policies that allow us to take advantage of our vast natural resources such as coal and natural gas in a safe and responsible manner which will lower energy costs and create jobs.” Critz added that Obama’s first step should be to approve the Keystone pipeline.

Understandable. WVA has only two resources - coal and natural gas. Anything that might threaten either creates controversey. WVA also has less than 1% minority population. Anything that upsets the "white folks hereabouts", like a black man in the neighborhood, also creates controversey. Politicians there have long known how to play these issues to their advantage.

I was with you until you brought racism into play. And according to the latest US Census the percentage of miniorities in WVA is 7% and 3.4% of them are black. So your statement is incorrect.

3.4% of 7% is ....? "Minorities" there are those without distinguishable origins - grandpa's offspring with the cousins, sister's babies, etc... Last census data I saw was a black population of less than 1%. But, if you have later data, I accept your numbers. Racism is always an "issue" in WVA where "not like us" people are not welcome.

Here you go, information from the last census:

And if want to point a finger at anyone regarding racism or bigotry point it at yourself. Look at your remarks regarding the people of WVA. If you have a problem with bigots and racists it must be hard to live with yourself.

Thank you. I stand corrected. I am familiar with the counties along the Ohio river which have very low populations of minorities, especially black persons. Now I am better informed, thanks to you.

Have no bigotry toward the people of WVA, in fact I love them for what they are. But , what they are is not to be disguised or hidden.

Another example that the honorable Democrats are jumping from the sinking OFailure ship early.

Aanother example of the influences of corporatism over the civil processes. In WVA one doesn't do anything to upset the coal companies else you will find yourself alone in the woods, or "missing" from the community. Coal is the source of jobs and money in WVA.

Do you have any proof to back up these accusations? Otherwise they are nothing but unsubstantiated rhetoric with no basis. I have done business with numerous companies in WVA and they are not dependent on coal or natural gas. You seem to ignore the fact that steel production is also a large industry in WVA. And I have done business with companies in the medical industry, transportation industry and software/internet business. In all reality you are actually clueless as to what goes on in WVA.
