Can Morality be Effectively Legislated by State or Federal Governments? How?

I contend morality cannot be successfully legislated. People will gamble, people will seek out hookers, people will find their pleasures.

Of course not and religion doesn't give you a pass on morality either.. Some of the most immoral people are Christians..

Laws are meant to be an extension and application of morality - not a method to create it. It is simply a manifestation. This can be seen throughout the Old Testament. This can also be seen throughout a lot of history. The ebbs and flows in allowing abortion (Rome), vs not (Vatican), or allowing homosexual activity. Allowing divorces. Regulating sex. Morality is mean to facilitate survival, laws are meant to enforce morality - ultimately attempting to solidify survival. Whether or not you believe in God, and God sanctioned morality - it's all an attempt to maintain our existence. One can't leave morality at the door when creating laws. This, of course, is all very philosophical.

It's impossible to prevent humans from acting in what is quintessentially their* nature. Besides - laws don't "prevent behavior," they punish it.

It can but only to a point. Moral issues mostly lie within a person or they don't. If an individual is incapable of moral behavior no state or federal government can change that no matter what legislature they enact. The proof is in our prisons.

I don't believe it can! Government however, does have the responsibility to legislate some morality. For example, it is immoral to steal or murder and we expect that government will legislate against those acts. Now, we have government legislating against religion stating that Christians cannot pray in schools or displays of Bible passages cannot be set up on government property. Seems to me, the anti-Christian left is willing to legislate their morality in opposition to the Constitution just as they accuse Christians of legislating their morality!

My father used to work in child protection here in the UK during the 1970's. He told me of a case about a young terrified boy, who on a technicality, was to be returned to his thug of a Father. The Father had satisfied the courts requirements by not being arrested, or drinking etc but this kid had no wish to be re-introduced to the misery he had briefly escaped during a spell in care where he had flourished. My Dad's Boss stood up and yelled as much at the Magistrate telling him it would be immoral to do so. The Magistrate was furious, and had him sent down for 2 days for his outburst, telling him " This is a court of law, NOT MORALITY" !

The law does not deal in, and does not care about the morality of any case, horrible but true.

By taxing the inactivity of not being moral.

Of course, we'll have to leave it to a board of unelected government employes to decide just how moral we each have to be, and to set the standards for moral participation we'll all have to participate in.

Anyone determined to not be moral will have to pay a fine/tax.

morality is different for everyone. thus with the savvy use of a word here or there you can manipulate what is viewed moral or not. i.e. ask someone would they work for Budweiser knowing that they make a product that could cause someone to die. Morally its the wrong thing to do but answers and opinions can be manipulated to justify a particular need (survival).

Everyone's very concept of morality is different and nuanced.

We can and should only legislate stuff that is beneficial to the health and liberty of people as a whole, and balance the two accordingly.
