Can Disney Fight Obesity by Banning Junk Food Ads?

Instead of waiting for the government to start banning junk food ads after the watershed, as it's already done in the U.K., Disney has decided to take on that responsibility itself. The multinational company announced that by 2015, it will require all food and beverage companies that advertise on its children's programming (Disney Channel, Disney XD, Disney Junior, Radio Disney, Disney.com) to meet certain nutrition standards.

Disney CEO Robert Iger said in a statement, "Parents can be confident that foods associated with Disney characters or advertised on Disney platforms meet our new, healthier nutrition guideline." According to USA Today, the company's standards will reflect government regulations. Health-focused consumer groups are calling it a "landmark" because a private company is preemptively regulating itself. Do you think Disney can fight obesity by banning junk food ads on its medium?

You're right about this... however, as a parent of two young children, I can tell you this will make it easier.

Surely they could, but heres the thing: they shouldn't. Planet Earth can only hold so many people, and we're reaching that number. I think that letting people get fat and die of heart disease is a good method of population control. Educating them about the risks of being fat is good, but if people want to commit metabolic suicide and help eliminate some carbon footprints, let them.

Here's a thought folks... don't substitute parenting with... TV... the government... Disney, or whatever.

Teach your kids to enjoy things in moderation... get them out of the house, keep them active. Then guess what? It won't matter WHAT THE HELL IS ON DISNEY because no one will be watching!!!

If they want to fight obesity, they need to do it at the source by attacking, head-on the FDA for its "blind eye" to Monosodium Glutimate and artificial sweeteners (sacren, aspartame, etc) that cause the body to crave "sugar"

If they think that is a reasonable thing to expect of people that they don’t help endanger the health of children with bad food and bad eating habits then they are obviously doing the right thing.
Any one that says that it is only the parent’s responsibility and that advertising to kids has no influence is a simple idiot. Advertising garbage like most of MacDonald’s wares for example through their very clever and well thought out marketing ploys is very hard for parents to resist as they are probably the victims of the same market themselves. Therefore; if a company refuses to be a part of it, Good on them, my hat is of to them.

It may help a little, but kids will see the advertisements elsewhere. Anyway, the unhealthy food isn't the problem. The problem is that people eat unhealthy food all the time, and get little to no exercise. Then they let their kids do the same thing, and try to blame everyone else for their inability to teach their kids how to be healthy. News flash: it's YOUR job to make sure your child is eating right and exercising, not Burger King's. Don't get me wrong, I think it's fine to eat junk food occasionally. The key word is "occasionally."

Because in the long run a child is going to eat what the parents put on the table, and if it's junk food, the only way to change that is convince the parents it's unhealthy in large doses.

Kids generally don't have money to buy the food for their household, their parents do. The kids eat what the parents buy them.

If the parents aren't buying food, then the kids don't eat.

A little bit. It won't make that much difference, but if the parents don't willingly give the kids lots of junk food, it should curb some cravings...

No because kids will always have an urge for Junk food and parents do tend to give in to their children's wants.

When kids are obese it's most often because of their parents. It's a parent's job to teach your kid to eat healthy, and that exercising is fun and good for your body.

I don't buy food based on whether or not it's advertised on the Disney channel or anywhere else. Banning things only causes people to get upset because we are not all children who need to be led around and told what to do by the government or anyone else. As a parent I will decide what my kids will eat, it's my responsibility to take care if them and decide what I feel is best for them without getting government approval first.

They're shaking in their Allen Edmond loafers because they know the real answer to childhood obesity is for parents to turn off the Disney programming and chase the kids out of the house to play.

They strain at a gnat, and swallow a camel, I seem to recall from the Bible somewhere. Instead of liberal-retards telling me what kind of light bulb I can use, what kind of toilet I can have, how big my soda can be, and what I can eat, why don't they stop the chem-trails, stop polluting our bodies with endless Big Pharma pills and shoddy contraceptive devices and drugs, and stop the other outrageous ways that the New World Order criminal elitist are polluting us and treating us like their plaything experimental lab rats.

If the cost of living wasn't so high, from all the meddling liberal-retard taxes and regulations, maybe, just maybe, we could afford better, healthier food?

It is the parents who should be in control of the diet in one's house. The Obama's are attention and publicity seekers, you know like the Hollywood loony Clooney group. Oh bye the way I dropped my satellite service, I think Disney is causing kids to sit around eating watching the Disney TV channels and they are getting fat sitting on Fat A..!
