Can Disney Fight Obesity by Banning Junk Food Ads?

Instead of waiting for the government to start banning junk food ads after the watershed, as it's already done in the U.K., Disney has decided to take on that responsibility itself. The multinational company announced that by 2015, it will require all food and beverage companies that advertise on its children's programming (Disney Channel, Disney XD, Disney Junior, Radio Disney, Disney.com) to meet certain nutrition standards.

Disney CEO Robert Iger said in a statement, "Parents can be confident that foods associated with Disney characters or advertised on Disney platforms meet our new, healthier nutrition guideline." According to USA Today, the company's standards will reflect government regulations. Health-focused consumer groups are calling it a "landmark" because a private company is preemptively regulating itself. Do you think Disney can fight obesity by banning junk food ads on its medium?

It can certainly help. Not only do the kids want what they see on TV, but the parents do too-the mom, especially if she is home with the kids. The whole country needs help with their obesity problem-I heard the USA is the fattest country on earth! (on the news this week)

I applaud Disney, & I can't believe people diss them for it. Our health, or lack thereof, starts with your diet-what you eat, is what you are. Many diseases start by lack of nutrients from a healthy diet, because it starts a chain of events-inflammation, which leads to bigger problems.

Obesity is not something to play with. Having healthy food commercials only make sense!! Do parents really want things that'll harm their kids advertised on TV? Fast food, junk food, etc will harm your kids, & can instill a future of unhealthy eating habits, that can become dangerous to their health, & future. Parents are being brainwashed by the unhealthy ads, like I said-if you don't think so, why do you think companies spend so many millions on advertising?

its not just lack of nutrition, its also sitting there in your free time watching disney or any other tv! if they are going to do this, they also need to shut their program down! as watching tv aslo contributes to being fat!

True. Maybe they should throw in some commercials about not watching TV & going outside & doing activities in the real world!

better idea! parents take action and raise their kids properly and NOt let government and corporatiosn do it! in order to stay healthy you need to burn more calories then you eat in the day!

Which everybody, practically, use to do, before TV. Of couse there were always some who found ways....Parents are responsible, but many don't know how to be parents, let alone know anything about nutrition. WIC trys to teach about it. Teenage moms often don't eat enough protein. Some drink & smoke during pregnancies, & smoke around their babies, letting the poor things breathe in 2cd hand smoke, which is even worse.

So there's a big need to educate mom's on eating healthy. which is why I think the disney commercials would be helpful-I didn't say take the place of parenting, nor did the blurb that goes with the question.

I think it's also good that the fast food "restaurants", are starting to offer some healthy choices.

healthy choices? ha mcdonalds "healthy" salads have more calories then a big mac

which salad!!?? I don't get any of them, but my daughter used to get a salad there with grilled chicken on it, that was really healthy.

chicken is a lean meat, better than ground beef which has way more bad fat.All animal fats have cholesterol, but healthy oils like olive etc are essential to the body, so is a good fat even though there's calories.

oh sure, so they lie to you but calories run much higher in mcdonald salads! maybe not the salad itself but the dressings and all the other stuff added

It always depends on what you put on the salad! There's nothing wrong with a club salad type, or like the one my daughter would get. I've worked in nutrition for 40 yrs, I ought to know. Point is, they do have some healthy salads.Pick your dressing wisely.

    AGAIN no third choice. Thanks.

UNDECIDED-- While I don't know that removing the ads will do alot at first I have seen firsthand the effect advertising has on kids. I worked in a toystore and the kids would walk in singing the ad for whatever toy they were there to get.

Young children are IMO very open to ads because they have not learned what ads are designed to do. Which is make you want something. If the kids don't know it exists they wont beg for it.

I think it has to start at home. Too many parents buy their children all these electronic games to babysit their children. Then they stuff fast food and junk food in their mouths to shut them up. What happen to the days when we had to use our imagination and go outside and play and be made to come in the house? Had kool-aid waiting for us to drink, or nice cold lemon-aid? It can only be stopped at home.

it is the parents responsibility to promote "HEALTHY FOODS" .........NOT disney, bk, mcd, wendys, subway etc.........whatever happened to parental control??? When I was growing up there was no such thing as fast food places....with the exception of a local "twin kiss", soda came in small bottles, candy bars, cookies, ice cream and the l;ike were "occassional treats".......my father did the grocery shopping and NEVER CAME HOME WITH A SIX PACK OF SODA........EVER !!, only cookies 2 or 3 times a month (box)...there was no soda, chips, cake(special occassiopns only), big bags of candy or junk foods !!

Disney is in this fight because this administration and ABC are all in this together. You can't force feed children what hasn't been taught at home on what should and should not be eaten. Mom and Dad buy the food, they are the problem, not the kids. All this crap of controlling what people eat is just the 1st step in the control of humans. If you notice they (libtards) are taking many more steps in controlling what we do, say, think, etc. You think the Obamas will stop eating ribs and hamburgers?

When will these libs wise up and realize it's not the product or the producer nor the gov'ts job to decide what people eat? It's the parents responsibility to see to it that their kids eat healthy foods. Parents who abdicate their responsibility are the ones who should be punished. Get those kids away from the tv and outside doing physical things.

This is the most ludacris notion I've ever heard. Unless Disney is admitting that they have actual control of our children via some sort of subliminal conditioning the idea that if they ban junk food ads is wholly stupid.

Thinking that Disney banning advertisements for unhealthy foods on their networks will make any difference in obesity rates it like people thinking they can stop child abuse by changing their Facebook avatars.

True that parents decide what they want their kids to eat but kids can refuse the meal. Kids today eat whatever they want, mostly because its sweet, sugary and on TV. Kids do what they see on TV, be like their favorive charatcer off their favorive show. So if Disney changes the food to be more heathly, then fine. Let them. In fact, half of the Disney commerails are about eating heathly and going outside.
  • democoach britt521 2012/06/06 20:59:55

kids only eat whatever they want because liberal parents don't dare dicipline their child and think its up to corporations and the gov't to raise their kids, if they didn't believe this to be true then libtards wouldn't be supporting what disney is doing!
  • britt521 democoach 2012/06/07 20:21:57

Well take it from me, I'm only 16 and I think what Disney is doing is great. Kids today don't eat what we're suppose to cause no oe cares enough to help us make the right descision. I mean our schools don't have heathly choices; pizza, fries, hamburgers, chips, etc. Watching Disney's Try It! ads make me want to try new foods and eating healthier. If we have people who care enough to do want Disney is doing then the obesity number would go down. I mean even Michelle Obama is part of the Try It! ad.

so if disney does ads like this maybe mcdonalds needs to do a no tv ad! this is double standard! tv gets kids fat, so as junk food! you will get fat eating healthy food if all you do is sit there and watch walt disney!

Not what i meant. Disney also does a thing on trying to get kids to go outside. I said that in my first comment. Disney is just trying to help kids and decrease the obesity number.

but you have to be sitting there watching disney in the first place! besides it sup to the parents to decide

How does that help kids? What about free-well? If parents just tell us what to and we learn nothing then where will that get us? Nowhere. Just let kids be kids and let them go out willing. No likes being told what to do, so why make kids go outside. Beside if anything adults need to go outside and eating healthier too. Kids learn better if they see it more then just hear adults trying to get them outside and eating healthier.
