Can Disney Fight Obesity by Banning Junk Food Ads?

Instead of waiting for the government to start banning junk food ads after the watershed, as it's already done in the U.K., Disney has decided to take on that responsibility itself. The multinational company announced that by 2015, it will require all food and beverage companies that advertise on its children's programming (Disney Channel, Disney XD, Disney Junior, Radio Disney, Disney.com) to meet certain nutrition standards.

Disney CEO Robert Iger said in a statement, "Parents can be confident that foods associated with Disney characters or advertised on Disney platforms meet our new, healthier nutrition guideline." According to USA Today, the company's standards will reflect government regulations. Health-focused consumer groups are calling it a "landmark" because a private company is preemptively regulating itself. Do you think Disney can fight obesity by banning junk food ads on its medium?

might sound good at first thought, but if you use your own brain, it is up to the parents to decide! besides what happens to the person who has type diabetes? and can't help being a little over weight? will they be hated on? because of this!

too much control is too much control! let the parents decide!

If parents yell at their children to lay off junk foods the kids will pay no attention. Parents in the large part seem to find it ok and in many cases condone their little fat brats shovelling in all kinds of early death causing junk. If on the other hand someone who can influence them with a program that will make them want to eat healthy then I can see young people going for it in a big way but the key is in getting an influential person or group to make them want to.

Only way they can help if they tell the kids to turn off the tv and get their butts off the couch.

Good and long lasting healthy eating habits begin with the parents...and parents must learn to say no to junkfood that kids want and whine for...it should be made a treat to have a small amount of fast food now and then, just so they don't feel deprived, since their friends are probably getting it...I would say a parent should totally refuse to buy it, and teach their child to say no to it...but it would be smarter to teach the child to make a good choice if taken to a fast food place by another parent....Sadly, reality does reign out there in the world...

No, but at least those kids won't be eating junk they'll be eating healthier things since Disney is promoting them. If they don't exercise at least they'll be eating healthy. Better than neither.

no they won't, because they eat what their parents bring them! kids don't do their own grocery shopping you idiot! the parents DO!

A lot of ids get whatever they whine for. If they don't fight their parents about eating healthy then the parents will buy healthy food. A lot of kids can whine to get what they want.

yes but those kids have liberal parents most likely. you a liberal too im surem because you think gov;t and corporations raise your kids! when it is up to the parents! stop letting your kids grocery shop, you might get healthier kids

No actually I prefer the government to stay out of things besides the environment because that's everyone's property. But either way it has nothing to do with that if kids want something most parents give it to them and this makes kids want healthy food.

it won't make kids want healthy food! kids want what their friends want too! so you best force their friends to eat healthy too, if you want to be that way! the kids can want junk food all they want, its still up to the parents to say yes or no! now a parent who thinks the government raises kids, will get them whatever ads say! and will also support other stupid things like girls in grade 6 learning about every sexual part of their counter parts, and same with guys learning girl parts! thats NOT up to the schools to do! but you probably think that its up to the schools. just like its up to disney to teach kids what to eat!

To a lot of parents they give their kids whatever to make them shut up. This makes kids want healthy food.

no it won't! a kid wants a barbie because their friends have one! if your that worried about ads portraying right or wrong messages shut the tv off!

only liberal parents who thinks its up to tv and government to raise their kids, get kids what they ask for!

What does political affiliation have to do with anything? Kids want things and a lot these days will be little brats until they get it or are put in their place and it's a lot easier to do the first to a lot of parents. Every child is important to our society and every child that grows up to be a failure hurts the whole community.

i don't believe in living in socialism! i know schools teach it! but socialism is NOT good! i kno wwe live in a socialist state, but i do not agree with it!

yes kids want stuff, and they ony become brats when parents buy them what they want, and then decide to stop buying htem wht they want! kids become spoiled bratds by getting what they want all the time! you don't want your kid to have a barbie? don't get it even if your child begs for it! but don't just no tget it but teach your child morals when you don't buy it!

Really? You act as if the kids are the ones doing the grocery shopping. My parents, when I was younger, did not like us drinking soda- you know what caused us to stop? They quit buying them. If someone told my parents to stop it would not have any affect on whether I drank soda or not. It's my parents action to quit buying soda that stopped us.

  • Dawn democoach 2012/06/16 19:20:38

friends, stealing etc.. you can't fix a problem with control. You have to teach a child what's best for them and convince them of that it's not that hard.

its not up to the government or media to raise our kids! you can say what you say till your blue in the face! if you think the government and corporations should be down our throats maybe you should go move to a fascist country!

the governmnent and media raising our kids have lead to higher std's, more drunk parties etc!

maybe your a bad parent and you need disney to raise your kids? thats why you support this so much?
  • Dawn democoach 2012/06/18 17:37:50

I'm not a parent. I'm young enough to remember how other kids were influenced by the media. Whatever though, you just like to jump and call everything socialist and fascist and you don't even know what that means or are ignorantly misusing them.

It's the parents' responsibility and choice of what their kids eat, no one else's.
