Can Disney Fight Obesity by Banning Junk Food Ads?

Instead of waiting for the government to start banning junk food ads after the watershed, as it's already done in the U.K., Disney has decided to take on that responsibility itself. The multinational company announced that by 2015, it will require all food and beverage companies that advertise on its children's programming (Disney Channel, Disney XD, Disney Junior, Radio Disney, Disney.com) to meet certain nutrition standards.

Disney CEO Robert Iger said in a statement, "Parents can be confident that foods associated with Disney characters or advertised on Disney platforms meet our new, healthier nutrition guideline." According to USA Today, the company's standards will reflect government regulations. Health-focused consumer groups are calling it a "landmark" because a private company is preemptively regulating itself. Do you think Disney can fight obesity by banning junk food ads on its medium?

You can't always plan a garden because it depends on your housing situation and demographics.

I know. That's why I said "or a few potted...plants". Or plant nothing. But some basic fresh fruits, vegetables and lean meats are not expensive. Especially when purchased in bulk and stored.

Healthy food is expensive, my mom has to feed four of us and our food budget for the month is about 400 dollars. It isn't easy to plant a garden where I'm from, especially when you're renting and theres no point to because it's not your house.

A garden was only one of a few options I mentioned. I myself am also unable to have a garden as much as I'd love one. But I can go to the grocery store for my family of three and buy lettuce for cheap, carrots for cheap, tomatoes for cheap, a can of garbonzo beans for cheap, some bulk skinless chicken breasts for cheap, etc., and then come home and have enough to make delicious, fresh chopped salads for my family and I for a couple meals with chicken breast left over. Or I can buy some cheap whole grain pasta, some canned tomatoes, garlic, onion, carrot, an economy size jug of olive oil and some herbs and make pasta with healthy, homemade sauce that gives us leftovers to freeze for a later meal. Or pick up bulk, frozen fish filets at a place like Costco, some cheap lemon, garlic and herbs, potatoes, etc., and bingo - another cheap, healthy meal.

Now there is the issue of "food deserts" where these kinds of foods, for whatever reason, simply aren't available, but too many people in places where they ARE available use the excuse that fresh food is just too expensive when I know from personal experience that it is not.

I really wished I lived wherever you do, must be nice having totally healthy foods not be hyper-inflated in price simply because they're not going to contribute to your premature death...

I literally can't find ONE food item (that is ACTUALLY food, not man-made crap) that is consistently under a dollar, most not even being under five bucks for that matter (and that of course is not including things like, say, a lemon etc). But boy, oh boy can I find shopping carts worth of things of <$1 boxed, processed, artificially, chemically, and genetically altered trash in boxes, cans and bags! You can't even find a package of bubble gum without crap in it anymore. And don't even get me going on the high fructose and corn syrup poison either... the body does in fact know the difference (ask any diabetic)... and it is in EVERYTHING! And anything it ISN'T in, COSTS MORE NOW!!!

    It's outrageous!

California... everything is more expensive, especially if it's 'healthy'. Perhaps its just all of the Vegans/Veggies that are driving up the prices on the healthy stuff... supply and demand and all of that BS, I don't know. All I do know is that just for me, the bill went from $50 a week to between $100 and $150 depending on what I need to get for my 'Mediterranean' (basically similar to Vegan/Veggie but with fish and sea-foods in addition to the fruits, vegetables and whole grain products). And that's at any regular ole grocery store, not the asininely expensive 'health-food' stores. I have Metabolic Syndrome and Insulin Resistance, so I have to eat SUPER natural foods, no artificial anything, no processed grains/whatever, all natural or else I'll make myself sicker than I already am. If I don't keep being able to eat this way (and I am sure prices are only going to keep jumping up on foods as the economy gets worse and worse) I'm facing full-blown diabetes and mutiple organ disease (heart, liver, kidneys). Nothing to mess with. It's genetic for me, wasn't acquired.

So yeah, going from cheap crap food to healthy and natural food doubled/tripled the weekly bill. And it really doesn't make sense to me how so-called food that's been heavily processed, artificially tampered with a...

Just saying, doesn't make any sense to me. You'd think it would be cheaper for the healthy stuff but it really isn't.

Hm. I'm in California as well. Los Angeles area. And it sounds like we have the same basic diet, although mine isn't because of illness. Sorry to hear about what you're dealing with.

Do you have a Trader Joe's near you? I always walk out of that place with bags of groceries at a really low cost.

Thank you, I'm trying to deal with it as best as I can but it's super difficult. Can't exactly eat this healthy food on the go... it spoils real quick (especially the hummus spread I make to use on my raw veggies) so I'm home-bound most of the time because of it... going to be almost impossible IF I ever manage to land myself some kind of work too. Ah well.

Yeah we might, but not sure. We tried doing the whole multiple-store thing but that didn't save us anything, really... especially when you factor in the cost of the gas to run around in multiple cities to do it too. Just can't figure out where all of the deals are and how to do that, and it eats up a whole day (my mom hates that). Its probably more poor strategy than it is anything else, but the high taxes and prices and how things go up and up sporadically all of the time sure don't help any.

Short of trying to grow my own fruits and veggies I just don't know really what to do about it.

And I believe out here in the Riverside County area prices are just a bit higher but can't be sure. Seems like it.

Agreed. I have to eat healthy, no 'simple' carbohydrates or unnatural chemically laced poisons in my foods and the grocery bill skyrocketed from $50 for just myself to over $100 a week!!! And that is also while at the same time not fulfilling the 6-7 servings per day of fruits and vegetables as well as those for the whole, natural grain products too! It's disgusting...

There's Yoplait yogurt. That's about 60 cents a container (get the light flavor). There's skim milk, that runs at 3.19 a gallon, however you have to consider that there are approximately 8-9 glasses making it like $1.02 per serving. Eggs-eggs are super cheap running at 2.23 a cartoon, get a bigger cartoon and you'll save more money. Eggs are high in vitamin k, b-12, b-2 and a lot more!
Then there are frozen vegetables and fruits which you can buy off season, for 2 for five dollars. That's for the brand name! Also: deli meats. DO NOT BUY the prepackaged, go to the deli that's in almost every supermarket i know, and order from them. Its cheaper, fresher, and of course our main concern: healthier. Also typically whole wheat bread (sarah lee, not nature owl they suck) costs the same as regular bread. Plus, rice. Rice is dirt cheap, can mix it with cheeses and meats, and even white rice is healthy. (but i recommend jasmine or brown)
Another alternative is to become a cherry picker. Buy fruits, vegetables, meats, and dairy (people seriously don't get enough dairy) when there on sale! In fact, when frozen fruits and veggies are on sale, buy a lot they last up to six months. Don't forget canned vegetables either! A typical fast food meal cost 6.00 rounding down!
A breakfast meal with: eggs(3 for the dude), yogurt, frozen fruit is: $3.64
Don't forget that walking and running is: free! also doing body resistant exercises like push-ups, sit-ups, lunges, squats and jumping jacks-lots of things you did in P.E is free.

I don't make excuses buddy, I get up and train 100 soldiers on a daily basis. I get in 1.5 hours of physical fitness training before you have your morning fart or piss. I also been in the US army for 21 years and I am an expert in master fitness. I calculate my soldiers body fat on a weekly basis and keep track of their progress. I counsel hundreds of soldiers monthly on physical training and teach squad leaders how to become better leaders on fitness. I haven't heard the term P.E. since I graduate high school which lets me know how out of touch with reality you are. Jumping jacks is also obsolete because of the damage it causes your knees. I'm surprised your didn't mention head, shoulder, knee, toes.

You can go get a full stomach a Burger King for $1. Now Burger King offers burgers even at breakfast time. So you can get a burger 3 times a day which makes it $21 a week and a total of 1,095 annually. Now try that with your grocery store and that amount will be multiplied by by at least 5. I have a very big challenge keeping my soldiers fit because junk food is so inexpensive.

No-I don't get up that late. I work graveyard as in I'm always awake at night.
Young people don't have to worry as much of damaging the knees old man. And how am i supposed to know whether or not schools back in your old days had P.E or not. No i didn't mention head, shoulder knee, and toes because i made a long post as it is. Does not matter if you are a solider or not, by eating fast food you are not getting enough vitamins without vegetables (just tomatoes, onions, and lettuce on your burger will not fulfill enough vitamin requirements).
Congrats on the fitness. Most old guys I know don't get that much exercise.

My chest and tricep workouts are built around doing all manner of pushups, chair dips and such rather than around power-lifting. Suits my beach volleyball and other athletic hobbies much better. I'm no stranger to 16 hour days, either - often while dealing with jetlag on the other side of the planet. And I've worked a notable number of round the clock shifts myself - not 72 hours, but 35 hours or so. Bedtime tends to be around midnight and I still get in 6 workouts a week. As for a pic - sorry, but I'm not into posting my picture all over the internet for a bunch of freaks and creeps to look at. You said: "you are the one writing how if you can buy groceries for pennies on the dollar, that everyone should be able too"

Not sure I ever said anything like "pennies on the dollar", but I do think that it's more affordable to eat healthy than some people let on. I've managed to do it in an extremely affordable way, although I have also acknowledged that many live in "food deserts" where it is difficult. But if you don't live in a food desert, it's really not that tough.

And no, I never said I have a garden or grow fruits. I don't because I have no space to. I only offered those as money saving options for those who have the space. For instance, I have a good friend who just dropped off a bag full of artichokes that grew in his backyard because he has more than he knows what to do with from a single plant. My parents grow their own lettuce in planters on their deck and get enough out of them to have fresh salads every single night of the summer. It's just a realistic healthy option to many people that helps with cost. Do you disagree?

But hell yeah I play beach volleyball. It's freakin' fun - but I don't see how that makes me seem like I'm trying to seem perfect. I just enjoy it. Sorry.

Your reply to it struck me as inordinately harsh and I just felt like replying since this is a public discussion forum.

Obesity isnt the result of high calorie foods. Interestingly enough "0" calorie sweeteners like aspartame are linked to obesity, among other things.

All you'll accomplish through such methods is convince the average zombie to think banning all sugar, or fat will curb obesity, and create an army of fools ready to clamp down on personal freedom.
