Can Apps Help Women Avoid Sexual Assault?

Apps can do just about everything these days. They've got apps that tell you exactly how much to tip, apps that interact with toys, apps that tell you how to get in shape... They've even got a Mom App. Now, thanks to the United States Department of Health and Human Services, women have two apps that are supposed to protect them from potentially dangerous situations.

The two apps, called Circle of Six and OnWatch, were selected as the winners of the Apps Against Abuse program. Kathleen Sebelius, Secretary of Health and Human Services, announced the Apps Against Abuse program in July as a way of encouraging app developers to create apps that could be used to protect women against the threat of assault or rape.

Circle of Six is a simple two-touch app that allows users to quickly and discreetly contact one of six friends in the case of an emergency. One touch selects the friend, while the other selects an appropriate pre-written message, such as "Come and get me. I need help getting home safely." Circle of Six also includes a shortcut to the Love Is Not Abuse helpline, which specializes in teen dating abuse.

The second winning app, OnWatch, is a little more complex. In addition to offering a quick-list of emergency contacts, OnWatch includes a shortcut for 911, campus safety (if the user lives on a college campus), and even a "Panic" button that simultaneously calls 911 and sends messages and GPS locations to all of the user's emergency contacts.

onwatch

Sound like a good deal? Well, you'll have to wait. The apps will not be officially released until early next year. But they will be free. And in case you're wondering: There were 33 entries in the challenge, and the winners did not receive a prize.

They might help. But I really hope no girl depends on it. I mean really. Would they really have time to push that button if they got attacked out of nowhere?
They should have some sort of weapon or have some sort of self defense training.

Perhaps they can help, but it would be a mistake to depend on them.

When I was 6-12 I was sexually assaulted an it was so hard to actually have to say somethin to my mum in person if there was anything like this around then, then it would have been so much easier an I probably wouldn't have gone threw the whole deal of depression.

WTF what's next an app to give us common sense, or a app on how to whipe your ass?? With all these app around by thE time she finds the right one the deed would be done. And what's so hard about dialing 911 anyway you seriously need an app to look threw andhit the call 9-1-1 box? Seriously

I think it might be possible to inform people of how to avoid dangerous situations with an app. Any shortcut to reach help would be appreciated.

It's a wonderful thought as long as it's used correctly and everything. The best protection is to not put yourself in a situation that could lead to that. Use the buddy system, have pepper spray or a loud noise maker (they have mini foghorns small enough for a purse and there's also some that can be put right on a keychain that are discreet) or even a gun or knife. Personally, I don't think enough women would be responsible with a gun so I would prefer most use a different way of protecting themselves.

I think that it would send aid first but by the time help comes, the act is probably over. I guess if you are abducted, then it might help.

Of course not. It is impossible for a woman to sexually assault a man. It's ALWAYS the man's fault.

Women wear low cut tops and push up bras to work and everywhere else. They wear mini skirts or tight fitting pants that show their clit and ass. They bend over in front of the man while standing three feet in front of him and cross their legs so the man can see up their skirts (on purpose to be noticed). They flutter their eyes at him. They flirt and tease. They use their sexuality to get ahead or to get on the good side of the boss And they wonder why certain men come on to them. If a man comes onto a female in the work place and the female makes it clear she is not interested---99.99999% of the time he will back off and leave her alone. The small percentage of the females that use their sexuality to get men to flirt with them need to just except the results. Act respectable and you will be treated respectable. ALL MEN are not jerks just as ALL FEMALES aren't.

Holy crap, are you seriously blaming women? The idea that they "get" what they deserve?! How incredibly archaic! Look, nobody has a right to anybody! That's including people who are married and in relationships. The man needs permission to act, he has no rights and he definitely isn't entitled. Seriously, your answer puts you in the sexist arena.

Done the right way, it can be a good tool. It might help friends keep watch on each other in a party or bar without alerting the perv moving in on their oblivious friend for instance, and keep bad things from even getting to a starting point.

For that matter, it can help guys keep their friends from getting into trouble.

Or kids, who can alert their friends and resolve issues quickly and safely.

I guess as long as the assaulter doesn't catch them using it. If it can get a plea for help out, that's a good thing. Good for Amber Alert for kids too.

First, please refrain from using the term, for women. Men, is some cases might benefit from these as well as women. How about the poor gay man who was recently attacked simply because he was gay. If these apps can help anyone in a critical situation, how wonderful.

Nowadays women are just as aggressive as men. What make men protect from women sexual assault then? What an absurd idea this is. Women are just as guilty as men. They both need to be aware that's all.

    Very funny . . . .

But I've had a woman say "no" to me, and then I backed off.

Later she asked me why I backed off?

I said "Well, you said no"

And she said, "But don't you know that 'no' means 'yes'?" ... and she was serious.

Apps only contact people who can help you. They wont pull the guy off you. It's a waste of time. If the guy is slow you can use the app; if not prey you have a blade with you.

I also fail to see how these apps are any different than just calling or texting someone on the phone to come help you...

His name isn't Scott. And if I'm currently being raped, how exactly is my flashy smartphone going to stop it either?

My point about him being big and strong is that walking around with him at my side, rather than a phone with an app, will prevent any attacks in the first place. Idiot.

And if I were stupid enough to be walking alone in an area with nobody around to help me, and some dude tried to attack me, I would shoot him in the face, not call my friends.

"Countless women," huh? Go out and speak to REAL women, rather than male-hating witches. You seem to be on some sort of anti-male crusade. Good luck with that. I'm surprised that you're not quoting totally fictitious so-called "statistics" disparaging males, which you have done on other threads. I love men...........SO THERE!!

Apps are not as reliable as an actual protective weapon like mace, a pocket knife, or even a gun.

I'd rather not chance getting pegged for a "concealed weapon" by having a pocket knife on me, I don't have the funds for a firearm, so my best bet is a can of mace, and hope to high heavens that plus my own two fists and legs are enough.

    pepper spray
