Can Apes Outthink Humans?

According to The Associated Press, scientists have discovered that the DNA of a bonobo ape is only about 1.3 percent different from humans. And ape behavior continues to astonish scientists as they demonstrate thinking processes and capabilities we never thought possible. For instance, one study showed bonobos will "pack" the tools they need to access food if they're moving to a remote location for the night, and remember to take them with the next day.

Another study showed that if one chimpanzee can see a piece of food and another cannot, the chimp that can see the food is able to recognize this advantage and keep the food hidden -- in other words, chimps are able to put themselves in another's shoes. Another study tried to determine how many pictures baboons could memorize over the course of three years, and by the end of the study, they could remember the pictures better than the scientists testing them.

Emory University primatologist Frans de Waal told AP, "Capacities that we think in humans are very special and complex are probably not so special and not so complex. This research in animals elevates the animals, but it also brings down the humans... If monkeys can do it and maybe dogs and other animals, maybe it's not as complex as you think." Do you think apes have the brainpower to outthink humans?

Someone explain to me how 71% of the respondants answered "yes" to this question, unless, of course, they are ALL apes?

Apes may be "bright" and "clever" and "complex"--for apes--but the last time I checked they couldn't out-think humans!

If they could, they would...but this isn't Planet of the Apes just yet!

These are people who confuse Reactionary Instincts with Thinking (Thought).

Humans can reason due to the THOUGHT process.

    Animals REACT by INSTINCT.

It doesn't see the baby Zebra as a baby. (Instinct vs thinking) Some people are just silly.

Of course the lion doesn't see it as a baby, it's a different species! It only sees it as food. Humans kill babies all the time, of different species and also their own. Does that mean we only react by instinct? Poor example.

Most humans I know would die in a chimp's jungle environment. So I'd say chimps were capable of chumping a human.

The only reason people are even able to survive in this environment is because we always have other people to do things for us. How many of the drivers in this picture do you think actually built their car themselves? Or even that highway to use for their transportation? Tell me, if you could only rely on yourself and your family members for survival, would you be able to build yourselves a car so you could get to work? Would you be able to find food for your family (no grocery stores because that's all packaged in a nice convenient location by other people)? Would you be able to build your own house and install your own heating and air? Or your plumbing to make sure you have access to fresh water? Probably not.

I think apes would do fine in our environment, because they're incredible at adapting to change, whereas humans are generally terrible at adapting to change.

What makes me think I will survive?

I'm not a teenager that has had everything handed to me, or a liberal who thinks everything is owed to me. It's called work ethic.

It wasn't that many years ago that all the things you take for granted did not exist.

No doubt Liberal, teenagers will be the first to perish should such a catastrophe come to pass. I mean how could you live without a telephone and TV and microwave. hahahaha

Study up on Africa and other 3rd world Countries....the majority of the population of these Countries have none of the things your life depends on, yet they survive.

I think humans have incredible ancestors. It's the people we are today that are the reason I don't think we'd adapt well. In the past I think humans have adapted very well. But that's because a long time ago, people actually had to work for the things they have. They would tend to their own gardens and hunt their own game. But people don't have to do that kind of work anymore, generally. I think in this day and age we've been too pampered by technology and luxuries.

I think some humans would be able to adapt, but a lot would not.

did you know most faactories make cars by machines, people don't do the majority of it, it shows that machines are smarter than people. most of the stuff we have is machine made. mechanics make people fees smarter than they really are. people who didn't have electronics and machines wouldn't make it in an electronic filled world any better than an animal would. watch and see what happens if an average person was left in the desert or jungle to see how well their "smarts and reason" will hold out. they wouldn't even make it a week most likely. no electronics. just them selvs. i know they wouldn't do well. we are only "smarter" cause we depend on other people and machines to do all the stuff we need.

I checked no, but I don't know. Even if proof pops up in their thinking, it's OUR interpretation of that "proof". It's OUR experiment. An experiment that is devised by humans, and contains an amount of human bias, no matter how small. It's just impossible to measure another animal's intelligent in OUR terms, and because of that, it's hard to say whether one species can "outthink" humans.

Also, a difference of 1.3% is quite a lot.

I know cats are certainly smarter than humans, I mean who picks up who's poop, who feeds who?

The only true differences I know between humans and other animals is opposable thumbs and agriculture.

IQ tests were created by humans to test human intelligence, or more specifically to test black people to show that they weren't as smart and therefore inferior to white people.
IQ tests are really a test of how much you understand at school, and yes there is some intelligence in there but it isn't real.

A deer could certainly kill you as could almost any other animal if it wanted to.

one of the key things to remember here is...
“Everybody is a genius. But if you judge a fish by its ability to climb a tree, it will live its whole life believing that it is stupid.”
    ― Albert Einstein

An ape would definitely beat a human in gathering foods in the jungle, a lion would certainly beat a human at hunting etc, etc.
if you take all of our gadgets away, we are actually a relatively average animal especially now that we are out of practice.

We didn't used to, now we are because we have lost most of our evolutionary abilities as they are now no longer necessary because we have gadgets to do it for us.

We were built to run, hunt, jump, climb etc.

A deer is a prey animal, and not particularly smart. It is conditionned to escape, not to hunt. There is no likelihood of it killing anyone or anything, except by accident, e.g. by running in front of your car, and they are even moderately good at avoiding that.
