In the past, scientists have suggested a link between high blood pressure and racist thoughts or tendencies, especially in cases where the person expressing racist thoughts is typically not racist. Now research from Oxford University is showing that Propranolol, a pill that helps lower blood pressure, might directly affect negative attitudes toward race.

Study author Sylvia Terbeck wrote, "Implicit racial bias can occur even in people with a sincere belief in equality. Given the key role that such implicit attitudes appear to play in discrimination against other ethnic groups, and the widespread use of Propranolol for medical purposes, our findings are also of considerable ethical interest." Of course, this doesn't mean the pill would necessarily be used to combat racism, but rather that it might have the interesting side affect of diminishing racism in those who already take it. Do you think the Propranolol pill can alleviate racist thoughts?

What a crock. This is just like the pill that, when added to water, will make gasoline, or the one that cures cancer. Racism is taught; it is not genetic or in any other way tied nito a physical condition.

Racism is so inbred and constantly taught to children by parents that the only thing that will stop it is the landing by green men who are exterrestial in nature. Then we would all realize that we are all in this together. Otherwise forgetaboutit.

Poor education and awareness contribute to racism, as well as bad experiences. Chemically, a pill could ultimately be used to help, but a renewing of the mind, will, and emotions through some form of counseling would have to transpire in accordance for genuine progress and results.

i chose yes because the only two choices were like every other sodahead questions the only choices were yes and no. I chose yes because I know from reading medical literature on Propananonol that it can help control stage fright. So if it can help alter one's fears, feelings of performing on stage, it very well may help control other behaviors. Racism possibly being one of them. I wrote possibly and not definitely. I did notice the drug's name ends in lol
So if someone makes a joke based on the meds name, the lol is included.

Unless it can make everyone the same color then we could all be the same and really what kind of fun would that be? Really there is only one race and it's the human race! The difference is geographical ancestry and the way people were taught to believe. If people could get past their own arrogance and simply use their brain we all breed and bleed the same! Never know someone of different color could save your life with same blood type!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Can't cure BUT High BP is both a manifestation of stress and a contributory factor of stress and the more stress one perceives the less one has control of their emotions. So in a sense better health overall helps reduce racism. Of course a cyanide capsule will cure racism.

No but better access to health care where BP can be treated and lowered would be a start...but of course providing access to health care thats just a silly habit of just about every OTHER 'civilized' country but there's no way we could ever afford it given the priorities of weapon systems, a tax breaks for the wealthy, and so forth....

There have been people with certain kinds of brain injuries who have changed character dramatically! So why can't a chemical act on the brain to turn off parts of it? Perhaps racist thoughts are a kind of brain activity that is localized? If so, this is "plausible", even if we don't now how to do it today.

There are already drugs which reduce violent behavior. Some of these seem implausible yet they work.

I see many comments about this being impossible. Why? The brain is a crazy system we just barely understand! Why are there so many narrow minded thinkers here? Oh, wait, maybe THAT's the pill we ought to be seeking?

I would have to agree with you. Going about my daily life here in the South, I do not see any blatant acts of racism. But, when I get home and turn on the television, I see the liberal "news" people and the liberal politicians whining about racial this and racist that. It is so freaking stupid that they keep using race to divide this country, when, if you notice, most people are trying to move on past it. Stop using white and black people to further your own political ambitions!!! Because, some of them just do not have the knowledge to choose any other path than the one you liberals are leading them on.

No its not the color of the skin ppl can't stand in certain races its the "content of the character". Look at Katrina when it was wiped out. When society broke down in New Orlean's you see what black ppl do. They rob, they murder, they destroy. Same thing happened in Haidi. When left unchecked black ppl do what they do best. On the other hand look at Japan when it was hit way worse by a bombardment of earthquakes, failing nuclear power plants, and Tsunami's....they pulled together and helped each other. There was not one reported incident of break in or murder. Why is that? Cause that's the "content of their character"!

All blacks are not that way, you would like to think so. It is how people a raised as to what they do. # 1 If they have not been taught morals and values they will be different or if there was never a role model. Do not put all blacks in the the same catagory. No one in my family has ever committed a crime or done none of the things you just decribed. I am black well educated. Through out my educational career periodially I run across racist, Guess what
they have the problem not me.I am happy with a good attitude and feel sorry for people who hate other people without knowing anything about them. No pill could help racist, most people that are racist has been that way all their lives, because they were taught to hate. That is sad. I know all white"s are not racist. I have many friends for years. You need more exposer to other people. I feel sorry for you because you have all the hate built up in you. with all the hate in you, you may come up with something nobody can diagnosis.
