Can a Pill Cure Racism?

In the past, scientists have suggested a link between high blood pressure and racist thoughts or tendencies, especially in cases where the person expressing racist thoughts is typically not racist. Now research from Oxford University is showing that Propranolol, a pill that helps lower blood pressure, might directly affect negative attitudes toward race.

Study author Sylvia Terbeck wrote, "Implicit racial bias can occur even in people with a sincere belief in equality. Given the key role that such implicit attitudes appear to play in discrimination against other ethnic groups, and the widespread use of Propranolol for medical purposes, our findings are also of considerable ethical interest." Of course, this doesn't mean the pill would necessarily be used to combat racism, but rather that it might have the interesting side affect of diminishing racism in those who already take it. Do you think the Propranolol pill can alleviate racist thoughts?

Anger is an emotion. All races have emotions. Your perception is not always the reality of the matter. Black people do not have a monopoly on anger. Did you see how angry members of all races were when Bernie Madoff stole billions of dollars from investors or when Ted Bundy serial killed all those beautiful women? It takes an angry man to kill innocent women and children. People are people and no race has a monopoly on any emotion.

A pill can cure anything....but the side effects usually require another pill....etc., etc., etc.

    Pills

A pill for this, a pill for that…
    A pill a cold it might combat…
A pill to clear your nose of snot…
A pill to calm your crying tot.
A pill to cool you when you’re hot.
A pill to warm you when you’re not.
A pill for nerves, a pill for heart.
A pill to help prevent a fart.
    A pill to slow senility
    And increase your virility
    A pill for sex ability
    A pill to block fertility.
A pill for aches, a pill for pain
A pill should do for any bane.
A pill to slow your aging rot.
A pill for all sickness you’ve got.
A pill to help you shed the fat
Those other pills you took begat
A pill is what the doctors say
Will get you merrily through the day.
And if the dark becomes a fright,
A pill will get you through the night.
A pill for summer, spring, and fall
And a pill for winter does it all.
But if those pills produce a pall,
    The undertaker is on call.

A pill cannot cure or alleviate racism but I do agree with the study. It says that people who are not racist and believe in equality express racist thoughts sometimes. Those who are truly racist will never be "cured" or made less racist by some pill. We are all different and like to pick on each other for our differences be it tall or short, skinny or fat, black or white and everything else that makes us different from one another. Racism only exists in the mind of the racist.

Just what we need, people thinking that a prescription drug can cure a mental problem. If it could, what would it accomplish? People aren't racist by nature, they are racist by choice, and why would they choose not to be? You cannot force them to take the pill, even if it did stop their racist thoughts. I would rather live in a free world with difference of perspective than live in a world that sedates my mind to bend to it's will. Maybe we would be better off without racism, but we cannot fix it. The only real way to stop racism is to consciously decide for ourselves to stop calling each other "White People" and "Black People" etc. and just call each other "People." Because all that matters is that we are all just people.

    Potassium Cyanide works.
    Drano.

But these are permanent solutions to a temporary condition.

I think racism is a biological throw back to the days of tribes and small groups.
Outsiders were a threat to supplies of food and women and this got put into our instincts.

The situation of racism can be cured by spending time with people you may initially be biased against. Once the individual can see that the other person is just a human the delusion will often ease away.

Nothing will stop racism... (except maybe like the top commenter said---everybody partaking in some big ol' buds)

Skin color is the most basic difference (or one could say that most basic common bond) that different races of humans have. The majority of people will always lean toward their own...

As sad as it is....the world is FULL of ignorant sheep who can't think for themselves---so even though we can pray for it--- many people are just to stupid to step aside from their basic "natural instinct" and use their brain to judge people based on the content of their character. ....pill or no pill.

Racism is taught, not learned. And some of what is called racism is the natural human tendency to classify and conclude based on limited data (stereotype), which we will never be rid of. It also comes from the natural human tendency to be wary and suspicious of differences, as a way to protect their own kind. Racism, while wrong and terribly unfair, can stem from another natural human tendency...to preserve and protect one's own "people" when threat to a way of life is perceived. (I.e. the KKK grew from poor whites, not rich white plantation owners, as a reaction to the competition newly freed blacks posed to their socio-economic group). This why we will never be rid of racism. We can try to reduce it, but it certainly won't happen because of a pill!

WTF do you mean taught, not learned? --people learn from what they are taught and teach what they want others to learn-------what you said makes NO sense.

I disagree that its a learned behavior anyway-----except in those extreme circumstances---like you spoke of with the kkk etc.

like you said (which i totally agree with)----its basic human nature to find a common bond... and skin color is the most basic common bond that a people can have...

Granted.... you have to still be a cave man who cant use his brain if you cant realize that we are not animals----and that humans are all different so everyone needs to be judged by their character---not their color.... but then again there are a lot of brainless droolers out there...
  • mjays Buffalo... 2012/03/13 16:47:53

Wellllll, obviously "taught, not learned" was a typo! I meant that it's taught, not something you are born with, with the exceptions of some of my examples. Those things I gave examples of will never go away completely. Society can dictate that racism is bad, and people will try to judge others by their character, but those inherent human tendencies will always be there, unspoken.

If it's not a learned behavior, then are you saying that there is biological component to racism? That makes even less sense. Racism certainly is learned. People say the meanest things about each other (some of those things are racist, some not) behind closed doors, in front of family members. Children are sponges. Even if the comments are not extreme racism, you can still "teach" it in your home.
  • Buffalo... mjays 2012/03/16 14:14:48
    Buffalobill91
sorry---didn't realize it was a typo--- I just read it and commented....

I will agree that "HATE" is learned ----however, you can think im wrong but the basis of racism is biological because everything in nature tends to gravitate toward the most basic differences that divide us... like I said, a common bond... which for humans, at the most basic level, would be skin color.....

The thing is HUMANS are supposed to be better than that----because we are evolved and not just animals.... but I suppose that's why it is so easy to teach "HATE" because its based on a natural/biological foundation.

"Psychologists have always known many of our prejudices operate automatically, without us even being aware of them."

Interesting study, and I think valid based on what you and I already know about what is inherent to human nature. We are saying the same thing about the roots of racism but I guess we differ on which we think takes precedence - the biological or the learned. I think we all know that each and every one of us, no matter how unbiased we may seem from the outside, harbor our personal distrusts, stereotypes, etc. But I try very hard not to let those affect my outward behavior, my treatment of others, or my choices. That is my point...that we can learn to behave in ways that are not prejudgemental towards others. We are smart enough.
  • Buffalo... mjays 2012/03/20 12:32:51 (edited)
    Buffalobill91
--Some-- people are smart enough. You and I seem to know it but I'd never say "we" implying that everybody out there does...

I've actually had ignorant folks hear me talk and say that im racist because I am proud of being a European American. --Meaning I am proud of my heritage....but what they dont realize is that I also appreciate African Americans, Asian Americans, Hispanic Americans etc. who are proud of their roots and heritage.

I feel that much of what the government propagates about racism not only causes more trouble, but it robs people of who they are and the knowledge of where they came from---It slowly but surely dissolves our traditions and its done ad nauseum... They are just trying to make us all think we are a soup instead of wonderful individuals---- I dont like how they want to turn us into a massive collective of sheeple...

That's why I said "hate" is taught (maybe I just have an issue with the word "racism") and honestly, the older/more educated I get the more I become annoyed by anyone who hates, especially based on something like race....I love what MLK Jr said about hoping his children could grow up in a world that judges people by the content of their character and not the color of their skin...

There are good people everywhere, as well as bad people of all colors--I dont see why some people cant see it that way...

Everyone has a right to be proud of who they are, it is not just something reserved for "minorities" as a way to appease "white guilt". That is utter nonsense. I am half Asian and half Irish descent, and equally proud of both. It's very personal and I resent anyone who may comment on it without knowing who I am, and who I love. I agree with all your sentiments but the one I have a different 'take' on is that you think we are all being lumped together and robbed of our history. I think that in recent decades, immigrants have been given the politically-correct message that it's more important to identify with our immigrant forefathers than it is to be American first and foremost. Yes, it's wonderful to know where you came from and honor your ancestors. However, when some latino kids feel they are justified in complaining to school authorities because other kids have an American flag on their tshirts on Cinco de Mayo...it seems to be that we are more divided than ever. It seems that the message is that identifying with your parents homeland is more important than all of us simply being American. If there is a world war, will we all break up and defend our forefathers' homelands? That attitude does not make a country, it just makes a country divided.

I see black history month, women's history month, Hispanic heritage month, American Indian heritage month... not to mention Black Entertainment Television, Azteca America ( a little different because its Mexican owned I think) but obviously you get my point..... There would be outrage to a white history month or an all-white tv station that only hires whites and only broadcasts all...

Yes, we are definitely on the same page. Black History Month, etc...those were created to promote pride where there used to be racism or shame. I understand that, but it's gotten way out of hand when, as you say, whites are labeled racist for being proud of their ancestry. Actually, whites will be labeled that no matter what they do. The cue is being taken from the White House.

You are kidding about Lima! My son is in private school and I work very hard to keep him there for the reasons you state. This is just another nugget to add to my list of justifications for spending the extra money. I went to public schools but they have only gotten worse. They scare me.

I was corrected by my daughter--- she was taught the capitol of Peru was Lima before the capitol of New York (where we live) was Albany... either way, its still shameful that since the Federal Government now makes public school policy across the board that we dont even bother to teach kids about OUR OWN NATION before everyone elses anymore.

Its kind of on the same lines of how our government has our military men and women risking their lives out there fighting for other countries to be saved all while our own is falling to pieces here...
