PHILADELPHIA (CBS) – Former Philadelphia schools superintendent Arlene Ackerman, who was given a nearly $1-million buyout earlier this year, has applied for unemployment.

School District spokesman Fernando Gallard today confirmed that Ackerman wants to collect state unemployment benefits.school district spokesman fernando gallard confirmed ackerman collect unemployment benefits

“The former superintendent did apply for unemployment,” Gallard told KYW Newsradio today.

This comes after taxpayers funded a $905,000 buyout when she was shown the door in August (see related story).

As part of her separation agreement, the School Reform Commission agreed not to contest any unemployment claims she might file.

The news isn’t going over well with Michael Lodise, the head of the school police officers’ union who fought for several months to get unemployment compensation – and eventually succeeded – for 120 school police officers laid off in June.

“These people were really hurting, really needed it,” Lodise recalls. “And here’s a woman with almost a million dollars, and she wants unemployment besides. I just don’t understand it.”

Based on her former salary, Ackerman would be eligible for the state maximum of $573 a week.

Ackerman had no comment, referring questions to her attorney, Dean Weitzman. Weitzman told KYW Newsradio that Ackerman qualifies for unemployment benefits because she is unemployed and was asked to leave the school district but not fired for cause. It will be up to the state unemployment compensation board to approve Ackerman’s claim.

I believe she has a legal right to apply and recieve unemployment although after getting 1 mil in comp. I'd say that's just the wrong thing to do.

She's just a greedy, old lady. I don't believe in one, but if there is a hell, I think she'd be going there, along with anyone else who would abuse a social structure set to help the needy.

Evidence of her being greedy? I think the article speaks for itself on that one. If you're not talking about that, I have no idea what else you are talking about.

But, She is entitled to the same benefits that everyone else is. She is just as unemployed as a lot of other Americans, so she collects the same benefits that the other unemployed Americans collect. Its all on paper. Legal and above board. However, exactly what was it that got her fired? I suspect a cover-up here....

it was the school board that made the deal, so it's really their fault. But if you were to give me a million, I wouldn't come back in a year and expect to get $500.00 a week. That's petty and ignorant. It's very black of her.

One good thing came from this. She is now showing her colors in a big way. Surely no one will believe she did not need ousting from her job after this. Perhaps her filing for unemployment will prevent, in the end, her EVER being hired again in any school system.

This is off the subject, but have you published a link (SH question) concerning "free trade"? I am trying to understand the effects/consequences pro and con about free trade.

I was trying to understand about our free trade with China. They seem to protect themselves with tariffs and some manipulating with their money. Are we protecting our self again them? Is our trade with them a good thing for us?

I am concerned about all the products I am seeing from China in our stores!

china severely limits imports.. manipulates their currency and ships sub standard product which because of the currency miss match makes them sell because our government is screwing with the value of our currency debasing it.

    are we protecting ourselves..
have you ever watched a boxer who keeps dropping his hands and is getting the owl snot knocked out of himself??
Free trade as i said works.. if governments stay clear

You said governments, with an "s". So, if our government actually were to stay clear, should we trade with a country whose government did not stay clear?

I have been exposed to much new information since I joined SH last year. There has been much to digest. I am sure many of my questions may sound surprising in their ignorance,

It is a weakness of my generation. Women weren't encouraged to be interested in politics or world affairs. I don't see that most of our younger women are either.

But it is never to late to learn.

Have you posed and published informational SH questions concerning the above mentioned trade legislation? Let me know if you have or do.

I have however I suppose I just didn't get it properly exposed. I tried to put it out under the Political field but just didn't get very many replies. You can come to my page and find questions asked and that should take you to at least two questions that I have placed on SH. Only one got a couple of replies and the other in think didn't get any at all. LOL
