California Bans Cough Syrup. "Good Law Making", or "More Useless Government Meddling"?

California pharmacies will have to cough up $250 if they're caught selling cough syrup to minors starting January 1st.

Is this good law making or just more useless government meddling?

This is disingenuous. The ban isn't on cough syrup, it's on kids being able to buy it. And I personally do not believe kids should be able to buy cough syrup, anyway - their parents or guardians should be making that purchase.

I go to school in the south but I live in California. Cough Syrup is a huge problem, kids are buying it and getting high. There have been numerous deaths due to over the counter cough syrup bought by minors. The parents can purchase the cough syrup for themselves or their child if needed.. Its just like alcohol...

Minors are using the cough syrup to get high.. Just like selling liquor to a minor. Its really not that big a deal.

Whats the big deal? If your child needs cough syrup then the proper thing to do is buy it for them. You know what is best for your child. Its the same with alcohol minors should not be buying it. Children are dying from over dosing on over the counter cough syrup, this was the right call. I have seen this happen first hand.

This is not a new thing, it's been going on for decades. I'd like to see the numbers of children OD'ing on cough syrup that were used to justify the law.
My reponse to this question was that my children can not go to the store to pick up medicine for my illness.
California is on it's way down because of rediculous laws like this.
Parents need to be held responsible for their children.

You are correct. So buy the cough syrup yourself. I appreciate California not ignoring that we have a huge problem. I remember kids walking around with bottles of cough syrup in their bags taking the labels off and drinking huge amounts during passing period.

A small amount of kids do this, not the majority.
I am sick and tired of teens being stereotyped. Teens are followed in stores as if all teens will steal, they are stopped by cops for nothing at all just because of their age.
I have taken custody of several teens whose parents have failed them. They did not use their upbringing as a crutch to do drugs or steal or commit other crimes.
Punish all for the acts of the few? No!

Parents have nothing to do with it. Children are away from their parents most of the day. Its the same with alcohol. If children need cough syrup then have the PARENTS buy it. This really is very simple

lolol.. and Kids dont always put everything in the internet. It was the internet that taught the kids how to extract the DMX out of cough syrup and put it in pill form. But like I said before, just buy the cough syrup yourself and avoid everything... period, very simple....

cough syrup, and all the other man made drugs like meth, are chemicals put together to create a specific reaction, and that reaction causes a chemical reaction in our bodies. Marijuana is a natural plant, with natural reactions in our brains. People have physical issues, or mental ones, and THAT is the reason they try and get high. We as a society probably will never find a way to eliminate that need in every single human being, so we should look to solutions without damaging our bodies in the process. If marijuana wasn't blocked by the federal government, people would have the option to choose. I see what you are saying about it being a crutch, but I don't think we should be forced to suffer with our ailments if there is a natural remedy :)

I sort of see what you're saying, but if you're going to argue the natural remedy, then tell me what you think about peyote and it's uses for ailments. The problem I see is that people don't care if it's natural or not, it is a crutch and will be used as such. Why make it easier to get? Lord, they've even had to watch/ban selling of ingredients that make meth and they are everyday items. What does that tell you about our society?

It tells me that people have a real problem with anyone being high, so much so that every time someone figures out a new way to get high the government wants to ban it, unless it's alcohol, and they'd ban that too if not for so many people who enjoy getting high on alcohol.
