CALIFORNIA BANNED SMOKING IN CAR WITH MINORS. HAVE THEY GONE TOO FAR?

Cassie October 11, 2007 18:33:33

Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger on Wednesday signed a bill that will make it an infraction to smoke in a vehicle if someone under age 18 is present. But the traffic stop would have to be made for another offense, such as speeding or an illegal turn, before the driver could be cited for smoking. The ban, which takes effect Jan. 1, joins a string of smoking prohibitions adopted in California, including a ban on smoking in enclosed workplaces and within 25 feet of a playground.
What do you think? Is this law too much?
This law is totally ridiculous. If a parent wants their kid to enjoy second hand smoke, it's their right.
This law is awesome. Kids shouldn't have to be subjected to that.
Talk about an invasion of privacy. The Govenator has gone too far.
I think all smoking in cars should be illegal.

I don't believe in parents or anyone smoking around anyone especially children. I have seen women with their windows rolled down, sticking their cigarettes out the window. Sorry, but you still have dangerous smoke going around the children. I know it is an addiction, so I understand that but our children shouldn't have to be around it. I don't even like talking to someone that smokes, I am sorry but they smell like smoke. I think people ought to realize smoking is outdated, it kills you, at the very least it makes you terribly sick. The scary reality is, it doesn't really get you until maybe ten years down the road, then your lungs are already damaged. I had someone I loved dearly in my family that died from second hand smoke, how I wish they were here now. They were so sick the last five years of their life. Ever since then I cringe when I hear that smokers cough, I want to say, save your life, quit smoking, but that would not be acceptable to do.

The health reasons are enough to pass a law like this. It might make some people mad, and I am sorry, but it will also maybe add some years on to your life, while it saves little children's lives.

Maybe if ' Cauulleefforrneans ' had a clue when they entered the voting booth, they wouldn't have to worry about someone trampling their Rights ...

... we could solve quite a few of our Country's problems with one easy step .. lower smog in the U S A, lower crime in the U S A, lower Illegal Immigration in the U S A, lower the number of Anti - U S politicians in the U S A

..... GIVE California back to Mexico !

I agree with the no smoking with children in the car,So on the other hand I will have the fittest grandchildren in life and all those over weight children that don't have parents to say NO on eating junk food 24/7 will definately be better off walking while mom smokes a cigarette in the car while they actually walk to school.

Personally, I don't smoke around kids....or non-smokers for that matter.
I don't think that it should be a law, though....that's just me.

The police cant enforce the laws as it is. Parents should have more sense, just think what else they do around their kids. We cant police parents on every issue. Shows how stupid some parents are.

    ohhhh,yeaaaaah.
it's ok to be a little bit high ( in a car) where it's difficult to detect if the person is just stupid or smoked up , but don't be caught with tobacco..

as goes California so goes our dumb state. It's scary. Who is running the government anyway?

Glad to see LoXx that you are aware what those of us who Don't Smoke go thru when around smokers/smoke ... I also detested my Dad's smoking and occasionally got sick from it when we were in the car.

However, I am aware of Rights, and many do not see the road we are headed down ... you have Rights, one of them is a freedom to do as you wish with regard to smoking and nobody should have the authority to tell you you can't smoke in your house/car with or without your kids .. NOBODY !

If you care that little for your kids that's your problem , not the rest of the world

Funny, these Uppity-Ups think it's okay to cram your kids head full of Bull in our schools, pump them full of vaccines, but get super concerned about what you put into the air they breath ... imagine that !

As for me ... I'm getting very concerned about all the school bus's on my road ... too much diesel smoke and tire dust ... you don't think those tire treads just wear off and disappear do you .. I'm breathing that and the School Board needs to address this before it killlllllllllssss me

Start with this, I do not smoke and haven't since the 4th grade, like twice. I spent 17 years in the Military which I spent hours picking up other peoples cigarette butts. I'm not a fan, However Cigarettes are taxed and legal. Now to outlaw the use of these products in various places is wrong and gutless. If there is consern about safety of second hand smoke or smokers in general then lets put a stop to it right now. Stop farmers from growing tabacco, Put the people out of work that have anything to do with making cigarettes and stop the tax that comes from allowing people to buy them. Until that time I really don't see the right to this avenue of attack on smokers.

This law is awesome. Kids shouldn't have to be subjected to that.

There is nothing good about smoking, but if one wishes to take up and maintain the habit, let them have at it. However, minor children have little or no choice when they are with their parents. They have to breathe in the smoke whether they want to or not. I do not think this law will amount to much, but it might make some people aware of the dangers of second hand smoke. Regardless of your opinion of the dangers of second hand smoke, it cannot be a good thing.

I get upset when I see people smoking around children, especially when they are forcing the kids to breathe smoke ie; in cars or in any closed quarters. People breathe smoke, get cancer and die so it seems pretty selfish for a person to subject kids to smoke. Just go outside .

Every time I see an adult in the car with children and the adult is smoking, it makes me angry. It's not like it was twenty years ago. We now know the damage it causes, and still they puff.
I was in and out of the hospital as a child. It was either bronchitis or pneumonia. Let's get real. Marijuana is illegal; we can make tobacco illegal as well. Just be smart and maybe they can stop writing laws to govern it.

    What's next ... ' Parent Police ' ?

How about we have a Genetics and I Q Test to see if folks are eligible for a " Breeding Permit " !

If you look just a little bit, you'll be able to find a Country that already has these Laws in place and then you could relocate and let them tell you even further how to run your life.

    Do they require I D Tattoo's yet ?

    Scary ... real Scary.
