Bush criticizes Congress’s vacation after coming back from a four day break at the Beijing Olympics. Does Bush have the right to criticize?

Dangerous Dave August 14, 2008 01:13:22

Yesterday, after meeting with an oil industry front group, President Bush rebuked the congressional leadership for taking a “vacation” without holding a vote on offshore oil drilling. Some highlights of Bush’s time away from the office:

– Attended 95 sports-related events.

– Made 74 trips to his Crawford ranch, for a total of 466 days.

– Made 142 trips to Camp David, for a total of 450 days.

– Attended 327 fundraising events for Republican candidates and causes.

Over the course of his presidency, national catastrophes have taken shape while Bush has been on vacation. When he was in Crawford before 9/11, Bush ignored an infamous memo about an impending bin Laden attack. Similarly, Bush brushed off warnings of Hurricane Katrina in 2005 while at the ranch.

While congressional conservatives held political stunts on the House floor, Bush was kicking back at the Olympics. And as Russia invaded Georgia, Bush attended baseball, basketball, swimming, and softball games in Beijing, where he also made time for an hour of mountain-biking and playing beach volleyball with the U.S. team.
Yes. Bush is right, Congress should have taken care of our crude oil issues before they took off for a month.
No. Congress is probably more productive in a week's vacation than bush is in the entire year.

    Do you think for a minute that the president of the USA is ever "on vacation"? He has briefings, meetings, business still gets done. He just doesn't unplug and go "Oops! I cant take that call I'm on vacation." Even on vacation the President is still working and operating as this countries commander in chief!!!

    Go Bush and tell people to GET A JOB. Go ahead and downrave me. Each downrave tells me I am proving my point!!!

    George Bush has been in office for 7 1/2 years. The first six the economy was fine.

    A little over one year ago:
    1) Consumer confidence stood at a 2 1/2 year high;
    2) Regular gasoline sold for $2.19 a gallon;
    3) the unemployment rate was 4.5%.
    4) the DOW JONES hit a record high--14,000 +
    5) American's were buying new cars,taking cruises, vacations overseas, living large!...

    But American's wanted 'CHANGE'! So, in 2006 they voted in a Democratic Congress and yes--we got 'CHANGE' all right. In the PAST YEAR:

    1) Consumer confidence has plummeted ;
    2) Gasoline is now over $4 a gallon & climbing!;
    3) Unemployment is up to 5.5% (a 10% increase);
    4) Americans have seen their home equity drop by $12 TRILLION
    DOLLARS and prices still dropping;
    5) 1% of American homes are in foreclosure.
    6) as I write, THE DOW is probing another low~~
    $2.5 TRILLION DOLLARS HAS EVAPORATED FROM THEIR STOCKS, BONDS & MUTUAL FUNDS INVESTMENT
    PORTFOLIOS!

    YES, IN 2006 AMERICA VOTED FOR CHANGE...AND WE SURE GOT IT! ....

    While he has a point, he shouldn't be quick chastise Congress. With someone who takes so many "vacations", the President, no matter his mistakes, knows the pressure of politics. Congress is one of the three branches, along with Judicial Court. So they all know pressure. A week won't change much, unless Alas, Babylon comes in the form of oil off chore drilling. (Great book, by the way ).
    He shouldn't chastise, but find a way to help them come to a conclusion. Strike that. Maybe he better just keep his head out. Hasn't got long in office anyways. What the hell.

    Bush, as President has full functionality and communications and therefore can do his job while "out" on vacation or on trips. Visibility out across the nation and around the world is his job. Congress can only function when in session, there are no communications or capabilities for a congressman on vacation to participate in any legislative activities. So you have simply not done your homework. As for this ineffectual congress, lead by the incompetent and shallow Nancy Pelosi and the world class bozo Harry Reid, is shameful. If Congress were a business they both would have been fired for their lack of productivity. I think if we have troops in combat that these long summer congressional recesses and other vacations should be cancelled. Now in this time of crisis over energy, they wobble and delay... but they sure left on vacation on time. The 110th Congress should be reconvened immediately and vote on this critical energy bill. But they are too busy going to party time in Denver, all at our expense, in more ways than one.

    Our country is in a fuel crisis, they should've not been on a paid break, now an unpaid break with having to pay for their own gas? Now that would change their perspectives! Besides, did ever cross your mind that attending the Olympics is part of foreign relations? Showing our support for our athletes? I guess Bill Clinton never spent time at Camp David or attended sporting events or had time for a quick intern BJ? By the way, please site your source on ignoring an infamous memo or should we believe it just because you say so?

    But let me throw it back on all of us.....How can Congress have a 18% favorability rating and a 97% reelection rate. If we were smart we would throw all of them out and start over.

    So, in 2006 America voted for CHANGE, and we got it!!!....Now Obama, the democrat candidate for president claims he’s going to really give us change!!....Can we afford anymore change?

    I have said all along its Congress, and their 12% approval rating, that's right, not even half of Bush's, rofl.
    Congress has blocked everything Bush wanted to do, all because they hate they war.
    So, they are willing to flush the lives of average Americans down the toilet simply to get 'their guy' elected, and my liberal friends wonder why I bash them so much.
    The sad part is, if it gets worse over the next 4 years, they will still blame Bush. Claim there wasn't enough time to undo all the damage, lol.
    I don't care if we give you 50 years, big government will never be the answer. Remember, you are asking them to bail you out, but they are willing to pay $400 for a toilet seat.
    Who is truly not thinking through Democrats?

    He's right to do so. They also took off when he was trying to get more money from them for our troops a good while back. In fact, at this time, a neighbor of mine was at home on leave from the marines and said at times they actually had to break in to places to steal ammo because they were low or didn’t have a sufficient amount.
    A lot of people might not like President Bush, but I do. He has balls! Reagan had balls, Franklin D Roosevelt had balls too when Japan attacked Pearl Harbor. Hoorah to men with balls! lol

    Congress is a bunch of lazy SOB's.

    They never accomplish anything, then 'blame' the president.

    Who are they going to blame when Obama gets elected?

    I'll tell you, Bush.

    The problem here is, it seems a lot of people are ignorant to the fact that it is congress that actually gets things done, not the president.

    Let me ask you, if the president was truly 'in charge', wouldn't we already be drilling off shore?

    Typical, I'm not taking the blame, politics. These clowns are no better than the 5 year olds in kindergarten spouting 'I didn't do it, not my fault' even while holding the hammer that broke the window.

    The truth is that no one is on vacation, really. The oil problem is bigger than one Congressional session. I think we really need to commit to an energy policy that sets goals for sustainable, non-oil-based fuel. The sun. The wind. Water. If there is a financial incentive, like, a tax break for big gouging behemoths like Exxon Mobile, who experienced the largest profit margin ever recorded in history during a severe modern recession, to invest in clean, local energy alternatives, we might stand a chance. Personally, we Americans have fewer vacations than anywhere else in the world. How else can you explain all the road rage and blog flaming we engage in? Let's take a break, step away and freshen our minds and souls so we can come up with better solutions.

    In the meantime, isn't exploiting our own resources a logical decision?

    This issue will NEVER get solved.
    Dem's block drilling
    Repub's block conservation.

    Also, you are in error. They did NOT record the largest profit margin, they recorded the largest profits.
    For those not educated in finance:
    PROFITS: overall $$ amount above and beyond all costs/expenditures.
    PROFIT MARGIN: What the percentage of Profit to cost/expenditure is.

    A typical business in America aims for 10-14% profit margin.
    Oil companies come in around 9%, below the average of say, soda companies, which is around 20%, or drug manufacturers, some of which are around 40%
    Nice to know who is TRULY gouging you now, isn't it?

Made them all clap their hands together and say 'whoopie!!... let's us go get us some BEERS!!' Of course, bushie's BASE were a little happier when they got their $75,000 + rebates! They got to buy some more companies instead of a few beers. This oil and energy problem has been sitting around, festering and getting worse for more than 30 years. Now that bushie can appear to care, he makes a big deal about the legislators being on vacation, even though he has failed to initiate any meaningful change himself and has been on vacation more than any other President in our HISTORY!. Not only is he a fool but a hypocrite. BTW, McLAME is no better. He's out there demanding they come back to vote on energy while he has missed more votes in 2008 (64% according th the Washington Post... that's 407 votes) than any other Senator. But, showing himself to be a TRUE "MAVERICK", voted with bushie 100% of the time... when he bothered to show up!
