PINEVILLE, NC (WBTV) – Dozens of police
officers had to break up fights and restore order at a local mall while
shoppers were waiting for an overnight sale of a popular basketball
shoe.

The disturbance started inside Carolina Place
Mall just after 5am. Witnesses said as mall officials opened the mall
doors, crowds of people pushed their way in.

"They almost took the door off the hinges,"
one shopper who didn't want to be identified said, "there were women
with babies in their hands and they on their backs."

Shoppers were in line waiting for the
re-release of the Air Jordan XI Concord tennis shoe at Foot Locker,
Finish Line and Downtown Locker Room.

Outside the Foot Locker on the second floor,
witnesses said some shoppers started jumping the line, then a crowd of
people at the back of the line forced their way to the front, causing
several people to get angry and become unruly.

"People were falling, I had to jump over a girl, it was crazy," Dominique Brewer said.

Two women were even spotted throwing punches.
The incident was caught on camera by WBTV Photojournalist Corey
Schmidt. Neither woman was arrested.

More than a two dozen officers from Pineville
Police and Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police were stationed inside the mall
as the stores continued to make their sales.

"Overall, it was a successful event,"
Carolina Place Mall General Manager Susan Barwick said. When asked what
happened to the women who were fighting, Barwick said she was unaware of
any fights inside the mall.

Outside the mall, crews were cleaning up piles of debris and trash left behind by mall patrons.

At Northlake Mall, shoppers forced the mall
doors open, taking the sliders off the hinges. "At 6:30, they were like,
that's it, we're going to bust the doors down, they busted the doors
down, everybody was falling and running, shoes everywhere," one witness
said.

Police responded to the mall in a big way,
sending 40 officers to the scene. One person was arrested and charged
with resisting arrest, a police spokesperson said.

Other witnesses said mall security threatened to arrest more people if they did not leave the mall before it officially opened.

At SouthPark Mall, there were more reports of
large crowds and an increased police presence, although no incidents or
arrests were reported, police said.

Across the country, there were similar scenes
of crowds forcing their way into malls. A YouTube video showed a group
of people fighting outside a Brooklyn shoe store.

The crowd outside the Bobcats Store at Time
Warner Cable Arena was not disruptive, but tensions ran high as only
season ticket holders got first dibs at the new shoes. One lucky holder
was scheduled to have a pair signed by Michael Jordan himself.

The Charlotte Bobcats did offer everyone who
was outside the area a free pair of tickets to Friday's game against the
Orlando Magic, which did not appease many who said they waited for
hours.

On the social media website, Twitter, many users asked and questioned the appeal of the shoes that are valued at $180 a pair.

Twenty years ago, Nike teamed up with filmmaker Spike Lee and Michael Jordan and sent the brand into the sales stratosphere.

The shoes are so popular, collectors will
fork over nearly 2 hundred dollars and never even wear them. Many just
want the chance to own a piece of the Jordan empire.

Friday, it seemed, many were willing to do anything to get that chance.

So far, no injuries have been reported in the Charlotte area.

Side question, how many do you think are on "public assistance"?????

Where is Jesse? Where is Al? Where is the NAACP? Where is the Congressional Black Caucus? Will Obama call for subsidies for Air Jordan's? We need to subsidize school breakfasts, lunches and dinners but they can afford $180.00 for freaking sneakers???
What? It costs about $10 for a state ID card, not $180. The poor will be disenfranchised by having to prove their identity to PREVENT voter fraud? Try to get on an airplane without an ID. Try to write a check without an ID. Try to tell the police officer, when you are pulled over, that you don't have an ID. What a bunch of crap.

this is racist nonsense relevant how?

"It costs about $10 for a state ID card..."

What are you, a senior citizen? At all states the minimum cost for a state ID card for someone 64 and younger it is 30 dollars,

"The poor will be disenfranchised by having to prove their identity to PREVENT voter fraud? "

that must be your dementia or paranoid schizophrenia talking. There is no substantial evidence ever so far.
"Try to get on an airplane without an ID."

Many people have not even been on airplane before. what a shocker. not everyone gets the chance of that or are that privileged as you. ya know, there are other forms of transportation that people take like Amtrak, buses, trains, etc, which don't require your Drivers Licenses or other state photo identity cards issued by Department of Motor Vehicles to show.

"Try to tell the police officer, when you are pulled over, that you don't have an ID. "

many people can't afford a car.

Racist? Really? Seriously? Al and Jesse are anywhere and everywhere if a black is attacked or insulted. I have watch many videos on TV and the internet showing a crowd of blacks (15? 20? More?) beating Caucasians and just walking away. Remember Philadelphia? What about Las Vegas where a white security guard was beaten senseless (broke his jaw and wrist) by a crowd of blacks? What about the Iowa and Wisconsin state fairs? What about the wilding in NYC? Jesse and Al should be out speaking against such massive attacks. Nowhere to be found. Where were they when four Oakland police officers were killed in one afternoon by Lovelle Mixon (and he was later praised, after his death by some in the black community). I never saw Jesse or Al down there telling them to stop that crap? No condolences for the dead cops? Had the police shot a black man who was shooting at them and he was killed, sure enough Jesse and Al would be there with bullhorns calling for a lawsuit and community action. Take you "race card" and fold it five ways and stick it where the moon don't shine.

These are for any ages. It is so easy to look up and verify. Why don't you?

There doesn't have to be actual voter fraud to implement voter photo ID. This is a preventive measure, not a punitive one. I have never attempted to bomb an aircraft but they want some kind of source of information for those boarding an airline. Was the original passenger booking the flight the same one checking in? I have never stolen a car but if suspected, I had better have a license showing I have permission to drive and that the car is mine. Not many terrorists boarding an Amtrak to blow up a building.

If I am going to cash an unemployment check, I need an ID. Just because I am not required to have an ID to board a bus doesn't mean that all types of travel should not require one. When I went to vote I needed two things in hand: a voters registration card (eligibility to vote in that election) and a photo ID. Otherwise, no voting. Would they have been discriminating against because of the color of my (white) skin? No, I just wouldn't have been following the rules. One is not SO privileged because one can afford a plane ticket otherwise most people would be grounded. Not all that cheap but not all that expensive either. About $250 round trip from FL to CT. Not bad considering all the gas it would take to make the drive. Oh, but then there are those that don't own a car. So what? We can't constantly be moving down the ladder until we hit the lowest common denominator where all are equally bad off.

You reason as if you are a 14 year old boy where everything must be fair and the same for all. Such idealism with no wisdom or common sense to match. Even when I was 14, I didn't think or reason as you do now.

Who's gonna pay for this? If the state charges them to buy a voter ID, that is a poll tax, which is unconstitutional.
  • Bill chgo 2011/12/28 16:14:39
    Bill
The state also charges me for a drivers license. Is that a poll tax too? No, it is a fee that is used to keep the DMV running and allows the state to monitor vehicles and its drivers. If one is sincere about wanting to vote, for 10 months put $1.00 a month into an empty mayo jar and two months prior to the election take the money out and buy a photo ID. Christ, with all the welfare, food stamps, subsidized rent, subsidized or free medical care one would think that some would be able to put some money aside that they save in not have to pay the same amount that I do to live. If one can't make it to the DMV due to it being such a hardship, then how will they ever get to the election booth? Should it be brought to them to keep them from feeling disenfranchised? It is not an unconstitutional poll tax, it's an ID fee which almost everyone should have unless they live in the Ozarks. Some give the ID's out for free, some charge very little.

Update! Update! Jesse and Al still missing and with no comment after Mall of America riot in Minnesota. They missed the fighting and the chair throwing and the beatings and the running around as if just uncaged. Jesse & Al, don't forget all of those "flash-robs" of 7-11 stores and others where a horde of blacks go into the stores and rob them blind or just destroy stuff. What type of mentality is this? Eric Holder is right. We are a nation of cowards when it comes to talking about race. But he left out the part about talking to many of them through cell doors. I will bet all that I have that all of those robbers/rioters are the ones most upset about how they are treated. Hey, I have an idea! Pawn what you stole and go get a photo ID card (mug shots not acceptable.)

There is no voter fraud. It's nonexistent. Take your meds. Believing something nonexistent is nuts.
  • Bill chgo 2011/12/28 16:05:03
    Bill
So, you are saying that there has never, never, ever, ever, in the history of the United States, been any election voter fraud. Talk about taking meds. As I said before, it is a device to help to PREVENT voter fraud. I give you Chicago. I give you Mayor Daily (the elder). I give you Obama. Your belief that there never has been voter fraud is the case in believing in something nonexistent, i.e. "NO VOTER FRAUD"
  • chgo Bill 2011/12/28 16:17:43
    chgo
Thinking a few isolated incidences of voter fraud over the past 100 years constitutes a state-wide law is indeed nuts.

10 million extra people voting for Obama isn't fraud, it's American.
  • Bill chgo 2011/12/28 17:24:14
    Bill
Obama is the fraud, not the Americans voting. Do you know what PREVENT means? Just pay for the ID. It can be used for MANY things, other than voting. What if one of your "poor" people did manage to get an airline ticket (purchased, gift from relatives, etc.) and that one went to the airport and they said to him/her, "Photo ID please." If they don't have one, they may as well tear up the ticket and have a seat. What if they wanted to cash a check? "Photo ID, please. No? Have a seat or leave." It seems you do not have the capacity for abstraction nor prognostication. Everything is in simple, concrete terms. Lower animals think this way, in terms of just "doing", in terms of images. They do not reason, they just are. Children are like this also; they need closure and need it quickly. No complication, just "get". But they do grow up.

I'm answering under the title of "other" I guess, so I wasn't sure what to choose. Anyway, I had no idea Jordan was still on anyone's radar. Didn't he retire about eight years ago? His name on a pair of shoes sparks fist fights at stores across the nation? If I were him, I'd stop promoting mayhem and find something else to carry my name IF I even need the money that badly. My guess is that he doesn't. And if I ever have $200 to spend on a pair of shoes, you'd better believe it's NOT going to be Air Jordans.
