BREAKING: Obama Embraces Marriage Equality
By Igor Volsky
May 9, 2012

President Obama has come out in support of marriage equality for gay and lesbian people in an interview with ABC News’ Robin Roberts this afternoon:

OBAMA: I have to tell you that over the course of several years as I have talked to friends and family and neighbors when I think about members of my own staff who are in incredibly committed monogamous relationships, same-sex relationships, who are raising kids together, when I think about those soldiers or airmen or marines or sailors who are out there fighting on my behalf and yet feel constrained, even now that Don’t Ask Don’t Tell is gone, because they are not able to commit themselves in a marriage, at a certain point I’ve just concluded that for me personally it is important for me to go ahead and affirm that I think same sex couples should be able to get married.

His endorsement comes less than a week after Vice President Joe Biden embraced the issue during an appearance on Meet The Press and a day after North Carolina banned marriage equality and civil unions in its state constitution. During the interview, Obama stressed that he personally affirms same-sex marriage, but says the matter should be left to the individual states.

The president last made news on the freedom to marry 560 days ago, when he told progressive journalists at the White House that he is evolving towards greater acceptance.

Obama’s remarks today bring him full circle to his position in 1996, when he was running for the Illinois state Senate. In response to a questionnaire from Chicago’s Outlines gay newspaper, he proclaimed, “I favor legalizing same-sex marriages, and would fight efforts to prohibit such marriages.” You can thank President Obama for completing his evolution here.

Obama accuser has long rap sheet

"Sinclair's biography, though, may get in the way of that pitch: Public records and court filings reveal that he has a 27-year criminal record, with a specialty in crimes involving deceit. The record includes forgery charges in two states, one of which drew Sinclair a 16-year jail sentence. The Pueblo County, Colo., Sheriff's Office also has an outstanding warrant for Sinclair's arrest for forging an acquaintance's signature and stealing her tax refunds. "

He already said he supports gay marriage when he campaigned the first time, what I want to know is what he's going to do to change it? He had 3 and a half years to address it and nothing. I'm not going to get excited yet.

I can't be sure when but I'm sure I heard him say he supported gay marriage. I just want to know what he's going to do to change the law.

Well, other than this past week- never- you are probably confusing his support of civil unions for gays- which he did say in his campaign. I guess when Congress drafts a bill- he could sign it- but it's really on them.

When he ran for office I believe he said he was "undecided."

"When Obama ran for re-election in 1998, he took
the National Political Awareness Test, which among other things
asked, “Do you believe that the Illinois government should
    recognize same-sex marriages?” His response:
    “Undecided.”

I think many of us considered him in favor of gay marriage because he talked about firmly being in support of gay rights legislation. However, even though he thought states should decide for themselves the definition of marriage, he seemed to be against state legislation denying gays the right to get married. So you are sure not alone in thinking about what you heard.

His "evolution" was speaking of a "change" in his public opinion on this matter.

Ending DOTA and choosing not to defend DOMA are starts. In this political climate, allowing the states to decide for now is a tactic. Some will continue to choose to enact laws that allow same sex marriage, at least. Having a sitting President of the United States of America finally pronouncing support, helps as well.

    IMO

Blacks are 98% in favor of President Obama and are not going to change their vote over this isssue.

Where he might lose votes are among anti gay independents. But then if those independents are anti gay they are most likely anti black president as well.

There are many religious blacks opposed to homosexuality. Also many do not appreciate the anti homosexual bias being compared to racial prejudice. Enthusiasm for Obama in the black community is not likely to be enhanced by his promotion of homosexuality.
