Judges should not be allowed to use one crime as an excuses to modify charges in another crime. Crimes and penalties should be kept separate. I think prison should be reserved for violent offenders only so I find it quit absurd to arrest people for perjury. The judge should have imposed a fine at best. Bail is extortion as well and should be outlawed.

Why is "failing to appear" a crime anyway? It shouldn't matter whether or not you appear for trial. Of course it's in your best interest but it should still be voluntary. It's only necessary for your lawyer or a public defender to appear on your behalf. If you're found guilty then they can issue a warrant for your arrest and attempt to notify you by phone or mail that you've been found guilty and to turn yourself in. Simple as that.

I think the judge is abusing his authority here by taking the liberty of presuming Z lied when it's entirely possible that Z was simply misinformed and did not realize the risk of committing perjury by attempting to guess? If the judge really gave a rat's ass about Z's bond amount, he had many other, more reliable, ways of discovering it.

Lying to the judge isn't a very good way to have your case heard. Z's "guilt" is assumed in many quarters because he is the one who had the gun and stalked the victim, confronted and then shot him. You can't blame law abiding citizens for raising an eyebrow when he was set free and then the reasons he was set free were lies further shows that he really shouldn't be out among the rest of us.
