BP Was Founding Member of ‘Cap-and-Trade’ Lobby

There’s a problem: BP was a founding member of the U.S. Climate Action Partnership (USCAP), a lobby dedicated to passing a cap-and-trade bill. As the nation’s largest producer of natural gas, BP saw many ways to profit from climate legislation, notably by persuading Congress to provide subsidies to coal-fired power plants that switched to gas.

In February, BP quit USCAP without giving much of a reason beyond saying the company could lobby more effectively on its own than in a coalition that is increasingly dominated by power companies. Theymade out particularly well in the House’s climate bill, while natural gas producers suffered.

But two months later, BP signed off on Kerry’s Senate climate bill, which was hardly a capitalist concoction. One provision BP explicitly backed, according to Congressional Quarterly and other media reports: a higher gas tax. The money would be earmarked for building more highways, thus inducing more driving and more gasoline consumption.

Elsewhere in the green arena, BP has lobbied for and profited from subsidies for biofuels and solar energy, two products that cannot break even without government support. Lobbying records show the company backing solar subsidies including federal funding for solar research. The U.S. Export-Import Bank, a federal agency, is currently financing a BP solar energy project in Argentina.

Two patterns have emerged during Obama’s presidency: 1) Big business increasingly seeks profits through more government, and 2) Obama nonetheless paints opponents of his intervention as industry shills. BP is just the latest example of this tawdry sleight of hand.

Well of course!! Now the delay in implementing any fast scooping up of the oil makes sense. How disgusting that they would allow this damage to occur just to push this bull sh$t agenda to tax us into poverty.

Cap and trade will benefit the few who have invested in clean energy at the expense of
most Americans who will pay more for everything they buy. Pickens has invested his money in clean energy and plans on making a fortune--many oil barrons have done the same thing. The best solution for Ameircans is to allow drilling on the lands the USGS has found recoverbale oil on. This would stimulate the economy, cut costs for every American, end dependence on foreign oil, make offshore drillling obsolete--this would be the most safe and least expesnive solution to our energy needs. Of course, BP would be opposed to this and so would many others who have invested in and profit from the oil shortage.

The way I see it, these corporations are giving money to all sides, so whoever gets in power is on their payroll. It's not just BP, it's all big corporations. They all have lobbyists in washington trying to buy favors. The crime here is the politicians that are accepting the payoffs

We can push the word out to Boycott BP here in the US. Stop buying thier gas and Diesel fuel. Stop buying anything that has to do with BP. 7 Elleven dropped Citgo because of Chaveze and his hatred for America. 7 Elleven was forwarned they would be boycotted and they did not renew thier contract with Citgo which is owned by Chaveze

Why do you want to boycott those independent small business owners who invested in gas stations and are only guilty of buying their fuel from BP. Those people did nothing to us but sell gasoline and it's not fair to them or their employees. We don't need any more business failures or unemployment in this country

in an attempt to put these small business owners out of business and those employees out of a job? Wow, that sucks

How is BP supposed to pay for the clean up and reimburse those living on the Gulf coast for the damage to their livelihoods if everybody boycotts them?! It's one thing to protest what they've done, but if they are to make things right they have to pay. In order to pay they must continue to make money.

It is totally logical. Your logic is non-existent. I suspect you are a liberal who wants to government to have to take care of everything rather than BP??

BP was trying to be an energy company, placing a side bet on each competing technology. I find a lot of fault with the company, but don't include that in its faults. Why shouldn't they do their utmost to be an energy company and not just an oil company. It isn't yet clear when the transition will kick into high grea, but it is perfectly clear that we will transition from fossil fuels to clean, renewable energy as the technology to do so matures.
