Boycott Valvoline Instant Oil Change!

Slade 2011/07/20 13:06:15
I took my Ford F-350 6 liter Diesel pickup to Valvoline they talked me
into running synthetic oil in it, Cost $150. normally it's $105. it
takes 15 quarts of oil. Within 5 days of the oil change the truck
wouldn't start.

I had it towed to my mechanic, after some diagnostic tests he said
the engine was not producing any oil pressure and it might be the oil,
because Valvoline put in 5W-40. Ford recommends 15W-40 NON synthetic
only. They drained the oil and put in 15W-40 and $400.00 later it fired
up.

When I presented this, Valvoline basically they told me to take a leap they were denying my claim, this was after the hotline at Valvoline admitted they put the
wrong oil in and a ASE certified Ford mechanic gave it to them in
writing that 5W-40 is too thin of oil for that engine.

Has anyone else had issue with Valvoline? Please post them here.
You!

Wow, that stinks! My husband changes all of our oil and filters because he doesn't trust anyone. Everytime we have had the oil and filter changed by someone they have screwed up or didn't change the filter or put the wrong one on. So my husband just does it him self. We have had other problems w a mechanic from walmart. One time I went in to get my tires changed. And when I drove away my car didn't feel right. So I pulled over and called my husband and told him. So he told me to drive home. Well I didn't make it far as my car was driving worse, so u pulled over again and he decided to meet me. When he looked at my car he couldn't believe what he saw. They forgot to put the lug nuts back on one tire and the entire wheel almost came off my car! We didn't even get an apology from them! I don't even want to know what would have happened if I would have gotten on the highway! :(

Sorry they messed up your truck!

I'm really sorry that you have had a problem with your service at Valvoline. I am an ASE certified Master mechanic who choose to work for a corporate Valvoline instant Oil Change. What I can tell you is that diesel oil is much different than standard automotive oil. There are 2 5W40 oils made by Valvoline. One is a synthetic automotive oil for use in gasoline Volkswagen and a few other manufacturers. The other is a diesel oil primarily used and endorsed by Cummings. Although 5W40 is not the intended viscosity for a Power stroke,

My husband is a Quaker state guy. He does all of ours.
When my girls and I took a trip cross country, we used synthetic oil so we wouldn't have to stop and change it anywhere. We put in the same grade as always. I believe it was also Quaker state. Ran like a champ for over 6K miles.
I'm so sorry that happened to you. Too bad valvoline won't own up and just compensate you.

First you don't put 5-40 in a diesel. 20-50 yes, but you have to know that as the owner.
Do your own and save a lot plus you will know exactly what is in it.

Silly me, I would have expected the self proclaimed "experts" at Valvoline to know this and not have suggested it in the first place.

Silly you is right. In Europe I don't think you would qualify for a license.
They at least have a minimum competency for drivers. If you get a flat in Europe you had better know how to change it. In the US we just call Onstar or something equally pampered for the owner.
When the experts aren't experts you need to know enough to tell for yourself.

Well Billy were not in Europe and you're in California the land of fruits and nuts. When the experts aren't experts the right thing to do is warn other consumers, not accept substandard service, part of the problem with your state. Why should we make an exception for incompetency? It's that line of thinking that got 0bama elected!

I have never used a quickie place like that. I used to do it myself but I have a regular garage that services both mine & my mates vehicles. I am so sorry to hear about what they did to your truck. I would definitely sue for the original cost + what the next guy whom actually fixed it charged ya + all legal fees. Glad that your truck is running now, on the upside.

No, I've always changed the oil myself. Places like Jiffy Lube are a rip off. Of course, I don't have an F-350 and I only need 5 quarts.

I never use places like that, they hire non mechanics, pay them nothing, and they destroy many cars a year. I know 2 people who have used these types of "quick lubes" and they never put their oil plugs back in. I know another that they sent her on her way and forgot to put the oil in. All three engines were destroyed.

America does seem enamored with paying more for less however these days...

i didnt. i said paying $150 for an oil change is stupid. taking a $7.50 an hour workers advice on your $40K truck, not knowing what kind of oil to use in your own vehicle, and not bothering to find out, now THAT is a clinical definition of hopelessly stupid.
inflate your tires to 600PSI, too.

and to furter make you look hopelessly stupid, you originally wrote:
"Go price 15 quarts of full synthetic oil and a filter for that truck."
then when i did, you said
    "15W 40 NON-synthetic not 10W-30. Try to keep up"
so which was it? you told me to price out synthetic oil, and when i did, you said
"Obviously you don't have a clue", and that what i should have priced out for you needs to be NON synthetic. who doesnt have a clue? which is it?
    .
if thats the case, 15w40 non synthetic oil, here is 12 quarts of 15w40 non synthetic for $60
    http://www.amazon.com/Pennzoi...
or here is 3 gallons of 15w40 for $36
    http://www.walmart.com/ip/Val...

at $36 for 3 gallons (16 quarts) you are $114 away from the $150 you dropped for an oil change, with only an oil filter to buy
at $60 you are 3 quarts and a filter away, with $90 to spend.

like i said originaly, who drops $150 on an oil change?? idiots, thats who

Hey, at least they changed your oil... my uncle had one of those Jiffy Lube screw jobs done where he had his oil changed and two weeks ago his engine blew because the mechanics said his oil hadn't been changed in over a year. Fortunately, he kept his receipts and three different mechanics all stated the cause of the engine issue was the oil not being changed. So rather than deal with the lawyers... Jiffy Lube put in a new engine and paid him $2 grand to avoid legal action.

So make sure to keep those receipts kiddo's and make sure they list clearly the location where you get your oil change. Better yet, actually watch them do it as you don't need to understand the process to know if they do it or not.

Sounds to me you have a gripe with the service center where you took your Ford for an oil change. They put the wrong weight and type of oil in your engine. It was not the manufacture of Valvoline. Take it up to small claims court and get your money back from the service center.
