Boy Playing ‘Chicken’ Crushed by Electric Gate

kyle 2012/05/08 00:12:13

NEW YORK (NY1) — Police said a Brooklyn boy was crushed to death by an electric gate at an apartment complex.

According to witnesses, Yakim McDaniels, 12, was playing a game of chicken with his friends on Sunday afternoon.

They said the kids were triggering the sensors to get the gate to go up, then seeing who could hang on the longest.

Yakim’s hand got stuck and he was crushed when he reached the top.

The management company for the site says it will pay for the boy’s
funeral as it looks into complaints that security did not do enough to
protect the children.

Sometimes it pays to just be Chicken! Now this young boy won't be around to give Truth or Dare a-try.

It's sad but people should know where their kids are and what they are doing.

This is sad, but sorry, 5 year olds know better than to play on barbed wire fences much less electric ones that can crush you.

The death of a child, regardless of the circumstances is tragic. The mother and the neighbors blame the security company, blame the people who bought the property, owned in whole or in part by a sports figure, which is adjacent to a project which was a playground and converted it into a garage. The Reverend interviewed said the kids got into trouble because they have no place to play. Now, I will grant you that kids need an outlet for their excess energy, and I will grant you that it would be better to have a playground on the premises than a garage, and it would be terrific if security could be in front of the gate every moment of the day, but none of that is the case and the ultimate responsibility for a 12-year old child is the parent or other adult guardian. This was not the first time the kids played chicken and, had this incident not occurred, I can assure you it wouldn't have been the last. Parents, TAKE RESPONSIBILITY FOR YOUR CHILDREN and stop blaming everyone but yourselves.

At 5, my friends and I would double dog dare each other to climb barbed wire fences. Even then no one was dumb enough to actually do it.

I understand kids testing their limits - especially boys. I understand that because of it, a child is now dead when it could probaby have been prevented and that is the saddest part of all.
