Bomb Factory With Homemade Explosives Found in California Home: Same Type Favored by al-Qaeda
November 26, 2010 12:53 AM EST
The largest cache of the homemade the explosives PETN and HMTD ever found in the U.S. was discovered Thanksgiving Day by San Diego Police in the home of a Serbian national. The suspect was on probation for a 2009 burglary conviction when he was arrested. Officials have referred to the home as a bomb factory.
George Djura Jakubec, a computer software consultant was arrested by authorities earlier in the week. The 54-year-old man is a hoarder, which has made the home difficult to search. They are just now discovering how large the collection of explosives and bomb material seems to be. According to authorities, the whole place is also filled with other dangerous chemicals like sulfuric acid.
The home and the entire block near Escondido, California have been cordoned off and only law enforcement and reporters are allowed inside the lines. They describe the process of sifting through the man’s junk as being very tedious. The type of explosives found so far and very volatile and susceptible to exploding from the slightest shock.
Both PETN (pentaerythritol tetranitrate) and HMTD (hexamethylene triperoxide diamine) are powerful explosives favored by al-Qaeda and suicide bombers. This could be a long drawn-out ordeal and more things that are dangerous will probably be found. George Djura Jakubec is considered a bank robber but this investigation could reveal a terrorist link. Robbery has been known as a way for terrorist to acquire funds. A bomb factory and homemade explosives found in California are shocking. Does this mean we are due for a terrorist in the U.S. with bombs made locally?
